Crisis Core

Wow, I'm surprised there's not a thread up already. Anyway, newest Final Fantasy VII spin-off is out today and it looks like a good one.

Anyone picking up the game?

If you are a Final Fantasy VII fan who isn't picking it up, why not? Lack of PSP? Or are you put off by the real-time no-party combat system?

As for me, I'm waiting on the UPS deliver it sometime today. Since I've got the extra time this week, I'll be live-blogging my experience with the game on my site (shameless plug: http://www.linkantilles.com/).

I'll probably end up buying it eventually, but the recent lot of FF7 material coming out of Squeenix kinda bugs me. The fact that Square is capitalizing off this game is kinda sad, especially since they're capitalizing on it like, what, a decade after the original game came out? FF7 is ranking right up there with Kingdom Hearts on the "let's milk this franchise for everything it's worth" list, and it's a tad bit depressing, especially when Squeenix makes so many games that are/were better than FF7.

And to reiterate (and shoot a hole in my argument), I'm probably gonna end up getting it anyway. Because it has Yuffie in it.

I pre-ordered it at Gamestop a week ago and picked it up today...

Then, I spent two hours straight playing through it AT the mall in which I purchased it.

I am very much impressed with this game so far... the gameplay is smooth, the graphics (for a portable) are phenomenal... and the voice acting doesn't suck!! ^__^

EDIT: I just spent the last four hours playing this game... something is definitely wrong here. No game should be this engrossing...

I am really digging it. The fights are a little repetitive, but I can't stop. The graphics are excellent, the story is interesting. Heck, I'm having fun just doing the missions. This one gets my approval so far. I'll tell you if anything changes once I spend more time with it.

For those that own it:

How is the battle system? Is the game suitably challenging? SE's efforts at real time battle engines are a mixed bag.

God of War Fans: How does it compare to God of War?

The battle system is similar to that of Kingdom Hearts, I'm finding. There are improvements, like a more simplified command system... Then again, one who is used to smoother fight animations can find fault with it, since the action can seem a little slower than what most are used to.

As far as comparing the game to God of War... I don't think it can be done. Both games are vastly different in their battle system executions. Far too different to say which one is better or worse. Not having played the PSP version of God of War (due to a love of the battle system, yet an intense hatred of the execution of the story... basically, I've never hated a game that was so fun to play quite like God of War) and assuming that it's similar to how the PS2 games play, I would give the ease-of-play nod to God of War since it's so easy to pull off impressive combos through button mashing. Crisis Core, however, has no context-sensitive portions in it like God of War does, as far as I know... so there's that.

The longer I play this game and the more I get into the plot, the more I like it.

Anyone else have opinions? Let's get some dialogue going here! Has anyone started experimenting with Materia Fusion?

haha, I ended up investing some money in a PSP about a week ago and I picked up a copy of Crisis Core. Wow...I love this game. I just beat the game, and man, what an emotional ending.

I don't really mind the battle system. I would like to have the fights at a faster pace, but it's good enough for me. I like real-time so it works. The DMW thing has its pros and cons though. I like it for the special abilities and stats that it gives you during a battle, but sometimes it just got annoying. And then there would be times during boss battles that I really needed the DMW to spin, and it wouldn't. That's when you would see me shaking the PSP and getting frustrated, hehe.

Has anyone tried Hard Mode yet?

Haha...I really lost some valuable materia through my experimentations. I eventually learned to save before I did anything with materia fusion. I was never able to make anything good with fusing items either. But all in all, I liked having materia fusion available; it came in handy.

I love the materia fusion system. Using it, I was able to create an HP++ materia with 300% HP bonus. Needless to say, I had 9999 HP far before I reached the final boss.

This had the unfortunate side effect of making the game a cake walk.

I did love the game, however. It really breathed life into characters I formerly couldn't care less about, and also made me want to replay FFVII. Here's hoping for a re-release of FFVII with a rewritten script.

I just beat the game a day ago, and wow the game was just awesome! I loved almost all the aspects of it, the story, graphics, and gameplay. I also love the new system, but then again I was never fond the original FFX type play.

I echo what Popsicle said, the ending is very moving, and I admit that I cried as I played the final two rounds. :(
Another plus you get like a lot of answers to stuff in FFVII, AC, and DoC. Best game this year in opinion, and I'm already re-paying it.

I'd love it a lot more if I didn't have to restart... one of my brothers erased my data... I gotta remember how I made a Curaga with +60% HP. Sure, not as epic as "HP++ materia with 300% HP bonus," but still. The DMW would get on my nerves... rolling ten times during a normal battle. Just let me attack normally and get this battle over with sooner D:

And OMGosh! The graphics are gorgeous!

That stinks. I hate restarting games when stuff like that happens. haha, when I play in normal mode, the DMW does get really annoying, but I just finished playing in hard mode...and heck! I wanted the DMW more!
Especially at the end when you fight the genesis avatar. He has a ton of HP and his little goons gang up on ya'!
