For example, I played a bard on Everquest. My first and only 16 levels went like this.
1) Kill bees around Kelethin until level 3.
2) Kill orcs on orc hill until level 7.
3) Kill orcs in Crushbone until level 11.
4) Kill undead in Estate of Unrest until 16.
5) Get broom to sweep up TychoDust since I've died of boredom.
Most MMORGs start characters off at a pitiful level. Warriors can get killed by rats??? Almost every pen & paper RPG will give its starting characters an edge on the mundane. And the loot payoff is pitiful. You are always scraping for money in Everquest at the begining. You rarely get good equipment from the monsters. It does get better once you get a high level but that takes an enourmous amount of time.
My Suggestion: Play a pen and paper RPG online. It shouldn't be too difficult to find them. At least then you will have a real person GMing your adventures instead of random monster spawning. I would suggest http://www.starwarsclub.org for Star Wars RPGing. I would join the Imperial Starfighter Corps since I'm the XO there and we're the most active branch of the SWC.
