Devil May Cry 4

Postby Kkun » Thu Feb 07, 2008 3:56 am

Why on earth is there no thread for Devil May Cry 4? The first and third are two of my favorite action games of the last generation and I suspect 4 will be a great way for me to finally break my PS3 in more thoroughly.

Comments? Thoughts? Gaping wounds where you played it and it blew a hole right through some necessary body part?

I can't wait to play it this weekend. I'm ready for another cr-azy party!

I'm personally not too keen on Nero as the main playable character, myself. There's just not the same appeal as Dante. However, if you were to ask me, the series needs moar Vergil. He was just that much of a cool customer.

I was doubtful til i saw the full length trailer a few months ago and it was amazing. But i am without a Ps3 or 360 at the momment but soon i'll get one and this game is a mus buy for me. Also I am actually kinda excited about using Nero and his devil arm it looks sick, not to mention you actually get to play as dante half way through

He's voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch: he'll be fine. I'm okay with it because it breathes new life into the game play with the Devil Bringer and everything. Dante is also playable for 1/3 of the game, also. I picked it up after my philosophy test this morning, but I can't play it until I finish a paper for another class...which I'm going to do promptly!

Well, you have a point, but now I want to hear Nero say "Love and Peace!" or "It's Morphin' time!". Let us know if it is indeed as awesome as we hope . . .

While I'm sure the gameplay will be fun, I'm fairly skeptical about the story (and yes, I care). My hope was that starting with DMC3 they were going to create a more cohesive world or perhaps even a vaguely-related storyline, but this seems new and random again. I suspect that like the anime I will find this fairly disappointing. DMC's motto should not be "Mindlessness... with style!"

The intro began with something of a proper narrative (it was loaded with action, but it was still more intriguing than Dante getting a motorcycle thrown at him or Dante getting his desk thrown at him..and so on). I haven't gotten far enough as I've only had time to play, well, about five minutes, but it seems compelling so far. I'll keep everyone updated as I play through it this weekend.

I could certainly be wrong. After looking at a few more trailers, I don't think as negatively about the story as I had previously (Nero doesn't sit well with me). But it looks as though we have some angels, which will explain the world a great deal more. Reconsidering, I withhold judgment until playing the game.

I'll have to look for this on YouTube. But yes, the series has never had good introductions.

They are some of the most polished, most enjoyable hack/slash games on the market (particularly the third). All of the combos and options available to you are actually necessary in order to play well. This and a variety of weapons gives them some solid replayability.

Second, they are for anyone who wants a good challenge. Your average gamer probably could not beat the game on the normal difficulty setting, and there are usually three levels above that that. It rarely feels cheap, however, the enemies are just tough and able to slaughter you if you fight stupidly.

But if you want strong stories or compelling characters, this isn't the place to find them. DMC3 has a decently entertaining story, but for the others you basically start off with a premise, then spend the rest of your time killing monsters in a dark setting. It's all very stylish but equally shallow.

I think UC summed it up adequately. They are fun, difficult, and extremely cool action games. The stories of the first two games are fairly superfluous to the experience (especially in the second...I read a summary of it recently and was scratching my head trying to remember when all of the stuff that apparently happened in the game actually occurred). Um. You get to see Dante get impaled quite often and pull lots of foreign objects out of his chest/arm/etc. with little effort. I think that gives it points.

Got the PS3 collector's edition, started playing it, and loving it. I just got passed the second major boss.

UC, I am pretty certain you will like Nero as a character, and Von Bosch does a pretty good job with the voice acting. Nero does play extremely different from Dante. While playing as Nero, I suggest that you try your best to understand and execute the Instant Rev and Exceed system. That is where the reward is when playing as Nero. Rev that sword!

DMC is often credited for being the harbinger of "stylish action" games, essentially hack/slash games where there is an emphasis on using a huge repertoire of moves against hordes of enemies. Particularly, DMC emphasizes and encourages the stylish part of disposing enemies. You can tell by the setting, the characters, the music, and the combat system. For DMC newbies, my advice is "try to be a rock star when you fight." So that is the driving appeal of the game.

As for other reasons, while the story arcs or plot is not that great, DMC has the tradition of having some of the best and coolest protagonist one-liners. That might appeal to you, Fish.

That IS important information to Fish to know. He just might dig it because of that.

The one-liners in the first one were great because some were awesomely bad and others were just plain awesome.

Indeed. And DMC3 had a lot of good ones too.

Honestly though, this is video shows why someone loves playing DMC4... it is about mastering the combat system to do crazy awesome things:

The following video is rated MO for Massive Ownage: http://youtube.com/watch?v=vDoaP8sybbo

Yes, it takes a lot of practice and talent to get that good, but that is real reason DMC players play DMC.

The A ranking is "Atomic" now? I liked the way they've used different terms in each game, but that's a bit of a stretch.

Yes, I will have to see what I think of him. Though I do not like his similarity to Dante in character design, the trailers I have watched say relatively little about his personality or playing style. Unfortunately, I am not certain when I will be able to play DMC4.

Indeed. 840K+ Red Orbs...

Out of curiosity, did the player in that video never use Devil Trigger, or does it look different in DMC4?

Well, how about "Smokin' Sick Style!!!" for SSS?

Yeah, I know.

Well, for the similar character design, let's just say family lines seem to play a part (though I cannot completely confirm that since I have not finished the game).

His personality is indeed very different from Dante and Vergil and the contrast is very apparent when they confront each other. The playing style is very different. After playing about 11 missions with Nero, and then having to switch over to Dante, the difference is frankly jarring.

uc pseudonym wrote:Indeed. 840K+ Red Orbs...
Actually, there are now two "currencies" in DMC4. The familiar Red Orbs are used to buy items and acquired from beating enemies. However, to upgrade arms and abilities, Proud Souls are used, which are acquired based on your overall ranking in completing a mission. So finishing a mission with an S ranking will yield far more Proud Souls than a D ranking.

He did use Devil Trigger though only when fighting Berial, the fire demon boss at the end. When you see the light blue spirit apparition emanating from Nero, that indicates he is using Devil Trigger. It looks very different from Dante's Devil Trigger.

That is indeed worse, but I have to be honest: with my playing ability I'll probably see A rankings a lot more often.

Ah, I had not heard of this development. That is just as well, I suppose, though any serious player will max everything anyway.

[color="RoyalBlue"]I finished the game last Monday, and it wasn't too bad in gameplay. They kept most of the moves of Dante from DMC3, and the story makes a decent transition to the new character and vise versa.
I played on the Xbox360 so the controllers were a little harder than the PS2 controller, but the graphics seem pretty improved from the original.
Still it's not a game I plan on owning.

Well, from what I've seen, it's pretty awesome, but Trish and Lady are (predictably) rather oversexed. Srsly, Capcom.
