Ergo Proxy ending
I'm not looking for spoilers, but I wondered how the ending left you feeling? I'm a bit concerned where the theological stuff is going to go and I would like your opinions on it before I go any further.

Lots and lots of room for many different interpretations, frankly, but I thought it was a well-done ending, and in a way, a good ending. Theologically, well... again, I've got more than one interpretation. I would definitely have to get into spoilers to discuss.

Agreed. The ending was ultimately not what I had been expecting, but that's not to say it was a let down, it was just different. The philosophical dialog at the end was a little confusing, where in my perception they began using the same words to refer to different entities. But yeah I can't really say more without spoiling.
What episode are you up to?

Not easily done without spoilers, but I'll try.
The setting is a future utopian society of humans served by androids. The main characters are a female police officer investigating murders commited by androids, caused by a computer virus (this is stated very early in the first episode, so it doesn't qualify as a 'spoiler'.) and a male immigrant with a troubled past.
What happens to them is chock full of spoilers so I am kind of stuck. I have to state the rest in very general terms. The story is about the meaning of awareness, intelligence, individuality, and to a certain extent, about what duties a person has to themselves, to each other, and to society. Arguably, it also puts to question what duties one might have to one's maker, and vice-versa, but that depends upon how you interpret the story.
At any rate, this is not a light-hearted adventure. It compares in tone and in depth of psychological story to GITS: SAC and perhaps Rah-Xephon or NGE.

There's no sex and no 'real' nudity (the first episode is as close as it gets) and while there's plenty of blood, there's hardly any gore to speak of. Language varies from dub to sub, but it's basically PG-13.

Is it an encouraging ending? or is it sad?
Wow, you're experiencing theological concerns after only the first four episodes? Hmm, well they're just the tip of iceberg as far as the plot goes. In short, is Ergo Proxy's world view Christian? No. As a Christian, did I find this particularly offensive? No. The series deals greatly with themes of man's imperfection, purpose and identity. And while I did not always agree with the philosophical conclusions the characters might draw, they weren't depicted as perfect authorities either. Everyone is searching in Ergo Proxy, and most don't like what they find. It's a show you muse over.
The ending is tragic for certain characters, but overall, it didn't turn out to be quite as sad as I was anticipating.

Its just that I get very attached to characters, I cried for an hour at the end of Cowboy Bebop XD so I would prefer to avoid that. The ending of Karas was sad but it didn't make me feel like rolling over and dieing. The ending of Haibane Renmei was wonderful though.

I see. In that case, I'd say that unless you get attached to a minor character or an antagonist, it shouldn't leave you crying for an hour.
