Quick Questions....

Postby ChristianKitsune » Fri Nov 30, 2007 11:51 am

Okay so I work at my college's library, and I was told to order some anime and manga for a new Pop Culture section...

and I am looking through some DVD ideas...and I kinda wanted to order some DVDs from The now gone, Geneon...

My question is this: Since Geneon is now...gone...are their series still available to buy? Or are they just...gone? (I looked on the site and it said the dvd I wanted to buy was "No longer available for Purchase."

I also would like your opinions on DVDs that would work well at a Community College Library! ^_^

Thanks so much you guys! I appreciate it.

To my knowledge, Geneon products can still be bought until the stock is gone. So if you find an online store with DVD's, go ahead! Snap'em up! Once they're gone, then they really are gone.

What site were you looking at? Generally speaking, they should still be available for purchase as long as they have DVDs to sell. Amazon and Rightstuf still have Geneon titles in stock anyway. Anime isn't exactly a fast seller.

Wow...I was looking for Gankuotsu as the boxset and when I checked the Geneon Shop itself it said "This item is no longer for sale."

Sooo in other words...it's going to be REALLY hard to find any more of the DVDS now? No one intendds to pick them up and redistribute them!? O_O

I strongly suggest the following:
Tenchi Universe (actually any Tenchi title)
Gungrave
Trigun
Last Exile
Dual: Parallel Trouble Adventure
Serial Experiments Lain

As far as we know, no. None of the titles have been picked up. I think Funi let on that they might pick some up, but as it stands, I don't believe anybody has.

Well, I don't know about Geneon's store itself, but you still can find them from other online retailers (like, as I said before, Amazon and Rightstuf), so no, I would not say that they are particularly hard to find at present.

This is what you were looking for, right?

At any rate, I do think that Geneon's more popular stuff at least will picked up by other companies eventually.

It's actually expected that other companies will pick up the big Geneon titles, like Gankutsuou. Unfortunately, since this is the R1 industry, so given the track record on efficiency, I would expect a couple of years until the re-releases come out (but anyway, with finished series, what's the rush? I'd rather they pick up the unfinished yet not quite as popular series).

This is actually pretty similar to another common phenomenon-- when a company's anime licenses expire, the title can be relicensed and re-released by another unrelated company. Which is fairly ridiculous; why the heck can't the Japanese companies just, I dunno, make a permanent license? -_-;

It could be a year wait for any of titles to be release again.

If another distributor tries to pick up any of the titles, they will have to start with contract agreements and licensing negotiations. This part could take weeks or even months for contract and licensing agreements to finish.

After that all that and getting the voice actors for the titles, which can take a few months with that.

When its time to make the dvds, that can take months for that. They could use the Geneon's dvd that were already made. The distributor will have to replace the logos of Geneon and put their logos in the dvd and that takes a few weeks, if not more.

Also, it takes a few months in advance solicitation for mass market dvd distribution.

Now if Geneon USA was to re-start anime distribution down the road. They will have set up sales contacts, distribution partnerships and then produce and make the dvds and then relese them to the market. That will take time, if they were to re-start the anime distribution.

I'm not sure if anyone read the Oct 5th public letter that the President of Geneon USA put out.

But in the letter it said this,

from the Geneon USA public letter wrote:Geneon was, "internally discussing plans to explore all available options to continue distribution of Geneon titles, both old and new, at a later date."

Do I think this will happen as Geneon USA will be re-started down the road?

I don't have much hope that they will, but this has me worried.

Since they said that in the letter, that really tells you that Geneon USA is going to sit on the titles for now, untill they know if they will ever re-start the anime distribution.

I asked the question once to Rightstuf and they said they were getting a shipment in from Geneon. They also said that the titles would be avaible as long as supplies lasted. So in a way it is a rather of a crap shoot.Depending on the popularity of the title in question you may or may not be able to find it.The more popular titles will doubtless go faster.

I doubt that the more popular Geneon titles will go too long without being repicked up by ADV or some other company.

That is if you say a year or more is not a long wait, that is.
