About Tekkonkinkreet...
I'm just wondering, why is Tekkonkinkreet rated R?

Tekkonkinkreet is based on the manga series, Black and White. i've read a chapter of the manga series and it is a very unusual manga series. i'm not quite sure why it is rated R, but i do know that the author also did Blue Spring, a dark and intense drama containing graphic and explicit material. here's a little fact i read regarding the author's other works:
Taiyo Matsumoto made his manga debut in 1986 in the anthology Afternoon, with the short story Straight. His credits include boxing serial Zero, the domestic drama Hanao, the sports manga Ping Pong, the beautiful and violent, Black and White, and the Moebius inspired, No. 5. Black and White and No. 5 were both published by VIZ and scanned by Jinchi who is loved by all US based manga publishers.

According to IMdb, the MPAA rating is "Rated R for some violent and disturbing images, and brief sexuality."
Compare to Paprika: "Rated R for violent and sexual images."
In my opinion, that description can only be accurately applied to one scene, so the more carefully qualified description for Tekkonkinkreet suggests an even shorter segment.
The MPAA seems to be very strict when it comes to animation, which I presume is because they are concerned about countering the perception that 'if it's animated, it must be okay for kids.'
For another comparison, I tried to look up the reason behind the R rating for 'Heavy Metal' (the 1981 animated feature) which was truly deserved. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the explanation. It does say a lot, though, that a deep difference in 'adult content' exists between Paprika and Heavy Metal, yet they share the same rating.

Right. MPAA is so strict I was surprised that Appleseed was rated R here and 12A in the UK. Yeesh! Well anyways, I will repeat the question: why is Tekkonkinkreet rated R? PM me if you wish.

Because in America, they don't like the kids to see blood in their violence.
Some of the rules are kinda lame. Such as if in a live action film shows a kick to the head--'R'
