Unless you wanted the movie to be 6 hours (which, granted I might not have minded, but I'm sure the 60% of the movie's viewing audience who has not read the book would have minded), things had to go. Personally, I think they did an excellent job of deciding what to cut. I don't know what I would have changed about the scripting, granted that they had to keep the movie at a reasonable time constraint.
