Sorry for the double post, but I have another update. It looks like Donkey Kong has been added to the official character roster. This isn't really a surprise, but I thought it was mentionable.

Also, we need to get some speculation going as to who the other new characters will be (I know this ground has been covered a million times, but still...) and who we would like to see in the game.

Some of my speculations are...

I think there should be a Wolf-Link + Midna character. Maybe it could even be a transformation for Link, like how Zelda transforms into sheik, and how Samus turns into Zero suit Samus.
Even more interesting would be transformations for some of the other characters. Like a raccoon suit transformation for Mario, or something like that.

I also think it would be cool (if Ganondorf is in the game) if he transforms into Ganon for his final smash or whatnot, like how bowser turns into Giga bowser.

... I also think pirhana plants would be cool as an assist trophy. They could spring up in pipes from the ground and chomp your enemies :D Ooh! Speaking of 'chomp', Chain Chomp would be another cool assist trophy. Or even an item that you pick up, like the sledgehammer, and it follows you around for a while and bites people.

Also... I think it would be cool if they made goomba as a playable character... as a joke. And all you can do is move left and right... that's it.

I hope Ganondorf isn't a Captain Falcon clone and has his own moveset.

I can't find you a direct quote, but I believe that Sakurai promised that there would be no clones in this game and every character would have his own move set.

The only reason there were clones in Melee is because they needed more characters and they ran out of time.

Yes, but Sakurai also said that some characters from Melee might not return.

Midna might make the cut as an assist trophy, but I doubt she'll be a playable character. And this might just be me, but I'd prefer a cast of essential characters only. Link, Zelda/Shiek, and Ganondorf fit the bill, the rest is excess, just floods the roster.

And speaking of Donkey Kong's inclusion, is it too much to ask for Captain K. Rool to join the fray? Come on, Nintendo, you know it's true.

That's disappointing to hear. D: As excited as I am for this game, I will cry if they don't give Zelda the transform ability in this game.

While I agree with you, I still think that Wolf-link+Midna would make for an interesting character with unique attacks.
Okay, so K. Rool would be really cool.

I know Diddy Kong wouldn't exactly have the strongest attacks, but I'd like to see him in this one. However, he or any other Donkey Kong Country character would be a third party character, so I don't know how likely it would be to see anyone from that franchise.

Felix wrote:like how Zelda transforms into sheik, and how Samus turns into Zero suit Samus.

We don't know that Zelda will transform into Sheik this game, and as far as I know they haven't said whether Zero Suit Samus is a completely new character or just a transformation. Personally, I hope Zelda doesn't transform. It was good for GameCube since OoT had just been for the last console, but as the Zelda franchise gets bigger, Shiek becomes less important in the grand scheme. I agree with Fish and Chips that they should stick more to main characters.

Out of the new characters they've shown so far, I think I'll probable be able to handle Pit best. I like his combination of swords, arrows, and agility. I sort of reminds me of Young Link.

meboecker already covered this, but I'll state it more clearly. Donkey Kong is Nintendo's property. K. Rool was an original character created by Rare, same as with Diddy, Dixie, etc. Banjo also falls into this category.

Rare is now owned by Microsoft. So it's a safe bet that you won't be seeing any Rare characters in Smash Bros.

Haven't read the thread till today, but thanks for the clarification.

Although on the one hand, if Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid (currently under Sony's liscence) can have a guest appearance, Rare could do likewise (especailly considering the whole of the Donkey Kong series was, and still is, contained on the Nintendo market). But, with only "Two or three" third party characters confirmed/likely, odds are they wouldn't spend their breath on K. Rool or the rest of Donkey's crew.

Meh, I'm sure we'll live.

I heard that they're taking Roy out of the game.

I always preferred him over Marth =( But I guess that's because I don't use those two characters as much, seeing as most top-tier players prefer Marth over Roy.

Yeah, Nate... Diddy belongs to MS now, but Diddy Kong racing is on DS...

Though, I heard rumors of Halo DS... If only to further kill PSP sales as MS plans their XBP, I'm sure...

December for smash brothers... Ok... I'll have a reason again to play a wii in december...

I wondered about that, thanks for clearing it up.

Hmm, does that mean that the chances of Krystal from Starfox appearing in the game are quite slim? Because I think (can't confirm for sure) that Krystal is an original character made by Rare for Starfox Adventures, and she has since been adopted into the regular Starfox group. I wonder who actually owns the rights for that character...
I think she would make a pretty good addition in Brawl, though, since she uses that staff to fight with... and the game needs more female characters anyway.

I agree. Random enemies from various games may not be worth a character, but I imagine most players would love to see them.

It would make an interesting campaign or challenge level, at the very least.

I can't find the list of requirements for characters easily, so forgive this question. Considering that those characters have appeared in games on Nintendo consoles, would they be prevented from inclusion due to legal concerns? Part of me wants to think "Would they really sue them for that?" but then I realized it was a silly thought.

Well, as far as characters go, I don't mind if all of the SSBM gang don't come back as much, but I'd prefer that they take more time to actually design the characters....instead of basically sticking in already-existing characters with tweaked stats, like they did with some of the unlockables in Melee.

It's not that they're prevented from inclusion. Like Bob said, Diddy Kong Racing did appear on the DS. It's just the matter that Rare is owned by Microsoft now, so Nintendo isn't just free to use the characters as they see fit, they'd have to get permission from Rare. I can't see Nintendo going to all that trouble...it's the same reason why (sadly) I don't think Banjo will be on the VC.
Felix wrote:I wonder who actually owns the rights for that character...

Rare, for the same reasons that Square-Enix still owns the rights to Mallow, Geno, etc. from Super Mario RPG. Though Nintendo still owns Fox, any characters created by Rare are owned by Rare. It's just how the system works.

I think. I could be rusty on copyright law, so correct me if I'm wrong.

Okay, thanks. That's sad to hear, but I still hope that those character's find their way into the game, since their lives have been predominantly, if not solely on Nintendo systems.

Also, Hypersock, there's no reason for you to post if you're not contributing something relevant to the topic. It just clutters up the thread for people who are reading it. ^^;

I'll assume you mean in a general, popularity-contest type of way. Personally, I'd go for Kirby. He has a wide variety of abilities and the potential to acquire many more. Jigglypuff can sing, and that's about it (and hit hard, in the game, but I think SSB gave it this out of pity).

Well I know that if I was playing as kirby I would probably swallow Jigglypuff and kamikaze dive-bomb off the edge of the map. I hear that that practice is frowned upon in some circles, however, so I don't know...

Anyway, on the Smash Dojo today, it is revealed that Samus's "final smash" is the zero laser thing which shoots that massive... laser... thing... and it appears that this destroys her power suit and turns her into Zero-suit Samus. I wonder if this is the only wat to turn into her?

In SSBM? Jigs. Otherwise Kirby. Because he is amazing.
