The only reason there were clones in Melee is because they needed more characters and they ran out of time.
HyperSock wrote:Yes, but Sakurai also said that some characters from Melee might not return.
Fish and Chips wrote:Midna might make the cut as an assist trophy, but I doubt she'll be a playable character. And this might just be me, but I'd prefer a cast of essential characters only. Link, Zelda/Shiek, and Ganondorf fit the bill, the rest is excess, just floods the roster.
And speaking of Donkey Kong's inclusion, is it too much to ask for Captain K. Rool to join the fray? Come on, Nintendo, you know it's true.

Nate wrote:meboecker already covered this, but I'll state it more clearly. Donkey Kong is Nintendo's property. K. Rool was an original character created by Rare, same as with Diddy, Dixie, etc. Banjo also falls into this category.
Rare is now owned by Microsoft. So it's a safe bet that you won't be seeing any Rare characters in Smash Bros.

Felix wrote:Chain Chomp would be another cool assist trophy.
Felix wrote:Also... I think it would be cool if they made goomba as a playable character... as a joke. And all you can do is move left and right... that's it.

Considering that those characters have appeared in games on Nintendo consoles, would they be prevented from inclusion due to legal concerns? Part of me wants to think "Would they really sue them for that?" but then I realized it was a silly thought.
Felix wrote:I wonder who actually owns the rights for that character...
Nate wrote:I think. I could be rusty on copyright law, so correct me if I'm wrong.

Nate wrote:Rare, for the same reasons that Square-Enix still owns the rights to Mallow, Geno, etc. from Super Mario RPG. Though Nintendo still owns Fox, any characters created by Rare are owned by Rare. It's just how the system works.
