Who's got or soon getting a PS3

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

ACK! What causes that, I wonder? If it's only at the "seems" on the pieces, it could be an anti-aliasing thing, I guess.

That's awful, man!

Can you take it back where you bought it from, or do you have to return it?

That looks like some hardware fault occurred in the GPU.

That being said, make absolutely sure it is the PS3 by eliminating other possibilities, Bobtheduck. Try a different video cable, and a different display. Maybe a different video source like a movie.

However, honestly, that looked like something happened to the RSX.

I do not use eBay, but are you able to return it to the seller? I am not sure of Sony's return policy either in this case....

I also tried a DVD, it's the same problem there, so...

The service rep offered to replace it until she found out I got it off ebay... Then she said it's out of warrenty, and It's gonna take 150 to replace. Which I don't have...

So... Long story short, I'm out a PS3... and 465 bucks... I'm just going to see if I get the job I'm looking for, and if I do I'll pay the 150 when I get it... If I don't get the job, I'll save toward a new one... I mean, of course, brand new...

Someone on PS3 forums suggested I sell it on ebay under the description "Acid trip PS3" to snag the hippie audience, heh. I'm also going to go to gamestop to look for a PS3 cooler, but I won't buy it unless it actually helps... Need to test it out...

I'm also contacting the seller... Though, I'm not expecting much from that front...

Just to let you know, I live in hot and humid Florida, and my apartment is 73-75 degrees, and my PS3 has not experienced overheating at all and its fan has been very quiet. As long as you make sure that your PS3 is not placed in a confined space, it should be fine.

As for those external coolers that have been cropping up this generation of consoles... I really doubt their effectiveness. I can probably talk to a mechanical engineer at work and ask him if adding an external fan really aids cooling effectively. My impression is that it could make things worse since air flow is disrupted and some air could flow back in, but I will check with an expert.

Then there is also the issue will using such a device effect your warranty as well....

Oh, man... sorry. I know you were really looking forward to having a PS3. I guess all I can say is I hope things turn around for you.

In the case of the 360 coolers at least, some of them have been known to prematurely cause the dreaded flashing red ring of death (FRRoD) and also void the warranty.

Well, I'm taking your advice, and not getting the cooler... Instead, my parents offered to pay the 150 in place of the printer / scanner they were going to get me for my birthday... Provided, that is, that Sony agrees to give me a new warranty with the replacement PS3... I'll see on monday...

Man, I'm sorry to hear about this situation. I hope everything turns out well for you.

On the subject of coolers...

Since I work at a game shop currently, I spent alot of time researching them to find out if I should actually sell them. (I don't want to sell something to someone that I wouldn't buy myself) I found that they do indeed cause 360's (and possibly PS3's) to die out faster. Depending, on the model, there are a few reasons for this. Note that my research was done on the mighty intarwebs, so this may be entirely false.

1. Blocks the air-intake, making the system too hot.
2. Allows too much airflow, causing the system to run too cool.

Now, I know that "too cool" doesn't seem right. However, it most definitely can be. The 360 is designed to run at a very specific temperature. If everything is running cooler than it should, it will attempt to bring the temperature back up. It will go back and forth between too hot and too cool. Repeating this several times every time you play honestly can't help any electronic device.

Now, aside from that, there is another reason I won't ever use them. Many of the 360's that use them end up with a dark ring around the power supply female connection. I'm pretty certain that having dark rings show up on any electronic device is generally a bad thing.

... heats itself up ...

...

I'm not sure what to make of that, honestly. That goes counter to everything I know about electronics. I can't really even venture a guess as to why that would be the case.

Well, evidently the silly thing (the 360) is a very... Finicky creature. It requires a specific temperature and a specific power amount. If it's off by even a little bit, as can be caused by coolers and surge protectors it evidently opens it up to all kinds of health issues such as warping, bacteria, and small bugs that eat wood.

I imagine it wouldn't take much more than slowing the internal fans it has. Although, like I said, this is internet research so it could very likely be wrong.

I know very little about electronic...

In any case, I'm getting the return box soon, so i should have my PS3 back in 2 weeks or so...

I'm sure there will be new demos... Lair and Heavenly Sword... It will give me something to do until i can afford a full game... I may have a friend pay me to download MKII, though...

I know what you mean about being unhirable... I have had 2 paying jobs, both lasted less than 2 months... I'm about as hirable as Osama bin Laden in a fireworks factory.

(I have a "kind-of" job right now, and saving money with that job is incredibly difficult...)

There's always time to wait for the 80GB^^ Can't remember the tag price but cheaper than the original price of released date 60GB. Still, 60 alone can fill up TONS of stuff as it is :/ 80 is almost... unnecessary...

Last I'd heard, the 80g was to fill the spot the 60 did in terms of price. Same pricing, and the 60g is only cheap now because it's basically a company wide liquidation of the model.

rough isn't it XD

(@ etoh) yea thats what i've been hearing. I wish they would continue the 60 gig production tho. I would be fine with a 20 gig hd. all i would use it for would be basic games.
