Who's got or soon getting a PS3

Who's got or soon getting a PS3

Postby Bobtheduck » Sun May 27, 2007 2:51 am

Please, no "360 is gonna have Blue dragon, Mass Effect, Lost Oddyssey, etc" stuff here. No "Wii is 10x the system PS3 is for 5/12 the price" If I hear one "I won't pay 720 dollars for 2 games" I'm going to scream.

I just wanna see who on CAA has one, who's getting one, and what games are people looking forward to... I think it's fair, right? Being a fanboy or fangirl in a safe place to do so, right? Enough with the defensiveness...

I think Sony Gamer Day brought them back into a lot of people's favors. I had NO interest in Uncharted until after SGD because I wrote it off as a Tomb Raider with a guy, but the more I see of it, the more impressed I am... I will be getting this game at launch. It has, possibly, the most complex rigging ever done for a game. It doesn't have that super sharp look a game like gears has, but the variety of the animation is second to none, and the Indiana Jones like story looks really nice. I hope Squ'eenix learns from them and we don't see the "Tidus dance" or anything like it in FFXIII... Crappy animation can kill awesome models.

The low res trailer for easy streaming

High res (720p) trailer... Pause it and let it load...

The game I'm most looking forward to that I'm sure will be released this year is L.A.I.R. They're hoping to stand out as the first good dragon game since the Panzer Dragoon. It's made by the Rogue Squadron team and takes full advantage of the six axis. People may see the trailers and think "It's just flying and shooting fireballs" but if you really pay attention, there is a lot more to it. This has easily the most variety in any flying game, it looks incredible, some of the boss fights remind me of Shadow of the Colossus (though it won't be anywhere near that artsy, which is sad...) There is biting soldiers, clawing, fireballing, wrestling in mid air, harpooning other dragons, knocking other pilots off their dragons, mounting other dragons to take them out, even something like ripping the head off a rhino and tossing it at the armies below. They said they wanted the armies to behave like an RTS on the ground who would gain morale from your support in the air (if you do well, they do well, if you do poorly, they do poorly.)

Unfortunately, I'm also very afraid... Afraid this is gonna be like Pan's Labyrinth was... The "religious war" is setting up to be yet another hit on Christianity... I hope it's something more tactful than that, but I'm gonna be a bit wary... At the very least, I'll be able to test it out and if it ends up being like that, I'll just trade it in for Ninja Gaiden Sigma, which looks gorgeous (jiggle physics that Team Ninja's known for not will hopefully not take too much from the game) This video touches on what I'm afraid of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6hoXIpHals Of course, Final Fantasy X was pretty much the same way... I don't know why it didn't bother me as much as Pan's Labyrinth... Maybe because FFX wasn't quite so absolute about it...

http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=18639&type=wmv&pl=game

The SGD trailers for Lair are all shot off screens with cameras that didn't adjust well to the lighting... It results in them all looking dark and muddy... The real game doesn't look nearly that bad. Watching it in High Def doesn't really help because it doesn't change the fact it was still being taped off a TV, High Def or not...

Little Big Planet... Words can't describe how cool this is:

http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=4491

Just go there and watch all the trailers for it... Totally awesome... Only thing I'm worried about is what I'll bring up with Home...

Home... Yeah, it's not a game. It's basically Second Life meets Virtual console... Only like 100x prettier... My biggest fear with this and LBP is people getting away with posting porn where kids can get ahold of it... I hope Sony takes harsh measures on people doing those kind of things... Like, banning Consoles ala MS on Xbox-live...

high def demo:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=19663&type=wmv&pl=game

Youtube demos, not related to the highdef trailer... I only put the high def one there so you can see how detailed this thing is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVut8c8SnsU part 1 of long demo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWxRBoK3zv4 part 2 of long demo

The part of home I'm most looking forward to is the trophies... I'm starting to get addicted to Achievements on my friend's 360, but if they do it right, Trophies will be much better than achievements, albeit much fewer in number. I think, or rather I'm deeply hoping, trophies may even be included for PSP games, because they showed off a demo Loco Roco Trophy... I'd rather have that than a port of Loco Roco to PSN, to be honest... I want more PSP games and those will only come with exclusives like Loco Roco on PSP...

I don't really need to bring up FFXIII and MGS4... Those have been the games many have waited for since the beginning... FFXIII looks beautiful, though Squ'eenix haven't completely abandoned prerendered stuff yet... You can tell the prerendered stuff from the ingame by the jaggies and stiffer hair, and while there is a definate difference, ingame looks really really really nice now (the battle scene shown in the only full trailer out there is ingame)

So... Anything got anyone's attention? Who has one already?

I guess, starting with darkness, some multiplatform games are starting to add achievments to PS3 games... Since they are an xbox only thing, I'd imagine it only adds up for THOSE games individually, not cumulative like on 360, but I hope they convert those achievements to trophies, and I hope they have some variety in the trophies... I mean, if they all look the same, and there are 100 of the same dragon for the trophies in Lair, it's going to suck... Honestly... Trophies have potential, but only if the game devs put a little creativity into them.

My boyfriend has one so technically I 'have' one. He loves it because he has Motorstorm, Oblivion IV (although not an exclusive) and he's looking VERY forward to Heavenly Sword, Lair, The Darkness, Little Big Planet, Assasin's Creed, among others... I only have the single disk of Sonic the Hedgehog for it^^

Personally with me and the PS/Xbox war (and through info from him) PS is still winning with me and I've never been an Xbox fan (although it does have the odd interesting looking game). According to him, PS3s with their latest update are now able to connect to PSPs (something about playing PS3 games on them or something) and also able to play regular DVDs on quite the Hi Def (if the TV has it) rather than have to go out and buy the extra attachment for the system for another 200 bucks. Also with the new Xbox Elite coming out, wow would I ever be a mad camper if I had an original 360! All that extra stuff for a fraction the price.... PS3s keep going down in price too and for what they are worth, are a bargain. I've seen them go on SALE for 100 bucks less too, so 699 CAD.

Both for me.

*resists putting in the Gaint Enemy Crab joke*

Must...control...Nintendo fanboyness... *explodes*

I would buy it for whatever project Team ICO is working on, but after the system can be bought for $12 dollars on Ebay. That's how I got my Saturn. XD

(And even though I dislike Sony with burning rage, I respect your opinion. Everyone has their tastes. And every company has its bad sides. Nintendo wasn't always making good decisions either.)

I will likely wait until FFXIII comes out. Before I get a PS3. Price isn't as big an issue for me as it appears to be with some people, so I don't really have a major bone to pick with Sony.

I'll probably wait until sometime later in the summer, though. I'd be playing it all the time if I got it right now, and I don't really have the time for that.

I know people are saying they are waiting for the price to come down, but really it HAS been dropping and really, you DO get what you pay for. Blame the expense on Blu Ray if you must, which is why the cost is as high as it is.

Heck, with PS3s coming down in price Wiis (in most places) have been going UP!

I think the price is reasonable for the technology involved, even if it does put the platform out of reach for some of the PS faithful. For the price of the PS3, you can now buy a rather decent PC system that can play any of the MMO's out there as well as most of the other PC games as well as all the other stuff a PC can do - like get viruses and crash a lot.

I will probably get a PS3 eventually, but I am in no hurry to do so. Like Mith, I will probably buy FFXIII under the assumption I will have a PS3 someday.

Well, FFXIII won't be coming until next year... By that point, there will be plenty of great games on the system.

I can't wait until FFXIII, though... I hear it may be delayed until next summer in Japan, which means by Christmas 2008 in the US...

MGS4 is the single most important game for me, of course... They said that the assets aren't done yet, so hopefully some of those weak textures in the early trailers will be fixed. Also, despite liking MGS2, I hope they don't go too philosophical, either... They need to end the series with a bang... I don't really mean the end of the 15 minute trailer kind of bang, either...

I own a PS3, and the more I play around with its games and features, the more I like it. I am very happy with my purchase. The 1080p PS1/PS2/DVD upscaling, and the DLNA media streaming from PC to PS3 to PSP are really nice.

Also owning this PS3 has pretty much reinforced the idea that getting a Hi-Def screen (720p minimum, 1080p heavily recommended) is necessary to truly enjoy this console.

I am really enjoying Resistance: Fall of Man and Virtua Fighter 5, and I am really looking forward to these games in the future.

Assassin's Creed
Devil May Cry 4
Final Fantasy XIII, Versus XIII
Folklore (After Gamer's Day, I am very intrigued by this title.)
Heavenly Sword
Lair
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (Of course.)
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Tekken 6
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (The animation in this game is awesome.)
Bobtheduck wrote:I had NO interest in Uncharted until after SGD because I wrote it off as a Tomb Raider with a guy, but the more I see of it, the more impressed I am... I will be getting this game at launch.
See this one post from NeoGAF where a user did a screenshot comparison of Uncharted with Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, Gears of War, etc. While some of the shot comparisons are a stretch, a lot of them are quite interesting... quite telling where some of Uncharted's inspiration comes from.

Uncharted will no doubt anger many CAA members, like Ark... It makes Pirates look bad.

Then MGS4 has the awesome ninja that used to be a not so awesome replacement for Snake...

Ninja gaiden Sigma is one of the big titles on the PS3 right now...

Ninja Fans, PS3 is your machine. Yay Ninjas!

Heh as for me, here's a part-timers who's still pretty much collecting games when I should direly be saving money and prob won't get a chance to play half of them for years (but at least I've got them...)

One VERY nice feature of the PS3...

So I was given a scratched copy of Legend of Dragoon. Played for a while on my PS2 and decided to stop working one day and make skipping noises as it spun around. Still it in the PS3, works PERFECT. No problems whatsoever.

Considering about upgrading my VHSes to Bluray. Only own a couple non-anime DVDs and they aren;t too too much more than regular DVDs, but they are just so nice and thin^^ And of course, better quality... So might as well get them as Blueray rather than DVD.

Well, only if you have an HDTV or at the very least an EDTV (progressive scan standard TV)... Blurays look worse on regular 480i tv than DVD does, but I won't ever buy another DVD again, except for Universal movies (they're the only company that's HD-DVD exclusive, everything else just requires a little patience) because I will someday have an HDTV... After my PS3, of course... Which I should have by my birthday, if things go well (my own money)

I'm waiting for one of two factors:

1) I come upon a major financial boon (like an abnormally huge tax return or something), or...

2) I win one (which is the more likely probability).

Either way, I want one badly for many of the games that are coming out for it.

One thing I find a little... needing help with. Maybe a download will come out for it soon. My TV supports HD and is just a regular boxed tube TV. If youtry and play games that are formatted for those, full screen TVs, and then try and play it on a huge wide screen, the graphics stretch out and pixalate. God of War 2 on a big plasma wasn't as great as we'd thought. Is there a download that corrects it or does it just like a ton of configuration?

First, if you are playing PS2/PS1 games on the PS3, make sure you have firmware version 1.8 installed since it supports upscaling and smooth filtering of PS2/PS1 games. The upscaling and filtering will help to take lower resolution games like PS2 games at 480i resolution and match the native resolution of the plasma HD screen and reduce a good deal of the pixelation. It won't look as good as a PS3 game, of course, but you should see some noticeable improvement.

In order to take advantage of this, you will have to set some settings in the PS3 cross media bar before you start the PS2 game. Go to Settings->Game Settings, and you should see an upscale option and smoothing/filtering option. The upscaler option has a "Normal" and "Full Screen." If a PS2 game has a "widescreen" option in its option menu, like God of War 2 or FFXII, set upscaler to "Full Screen" beforehand. Then when you start the PS2 game, go to the game's option menu and search for the widescreen option and turn it on. Then the picture should be proportional to your widescreen. (Also, for future reference, if you are playing a PS2 game that does not have a "widescreen" option, set the upscaler to "Normal" beforehand.)

One final note, to take advantage of the PS2 upscaling, do not enable the PS2 game's progressive scan output. For whatever reason, in the current 1.8 firmware, the upscaling settings do not apply when a PS2 game's progressive scan option is enabled.

Believe me, between college and my fake part time job, I don't have enough time to play video games, either.

HOWEVER, my brother and I were knocking around the idea of buying a PS3. It'll take a me a few weeks to get the cash together, but I think we're going to go for it.

How did I miss this before?

First, the native resolution of Bluray is 1080p... In fact, up until the most recent update, wouldn't output to 720p... Only 1080p and 1080i... You jsut better hope your 720p tv accepted a 1080i input and did the downscaling. That is thankfully fixed. Most games output natively to 720p. The few out now that output at 1080p look worse than those released on 720p because there isn't as much ram available, though I hear that Lair in all it's scaly glory is 1080p...

In short... I have only a basic idea if progressive makes that much of a difference... With 1080, anyhow... With 480, yeah... Huge... Drastic... So, I'm gonna guess yes... My friend has Digital TV and we play his 360 on it... It looks a lot better... Just more crisp... In fact, I'm gonna guess the move to 720p as standard rather than 1080i may show how important some people thing progressive scan is, putting a lower resolution ABOVE a higher resolution simply because it's progressive scan.

Don't you have like a 40 inch monitor capable of greater than 1080p, Mith? I think just using a monitor at 640x480 and seeing the same content on a TV should tell you that progressive scan does matter. Of course, I've heard that the visual difference between 1080p and 720p only matters for large displays... I'm not all that sure about that, though, as I watch 720p stuff on my 17" monitor, and even on that small, i can tell a huge difference, so I'd think that 1080p on a 32" set should be worth it, as long as you get good enough contrast ratios and color depths...

Ironically, I've just never really thought about it. Come to think of it, that might be why various dvds on my DVD player look so much better than my cable. Then again, my cable it really bad. I've got a 30" winbook tv that simply blurs the heck out of it until you get a decent signal, but it's absolutely horrid to look at for any length of time.

Thanks for the tip!

Sorry for the bump... I got it the other day, and downloaded a bunch of demos... I love this thing, so far. Though it was diminished by my medical issues, I'm having a great time with it.

I downloaded a whole crapload of demos. I got Resistance, Rub a Dub, Ninja Gaiden, Gundam Dynasty Warriors, Lemmings, Genji, and blast factor...

The standout of this group is, by far, Ninja Gaiden. This is a remake of the best game on the Xbox 1, and it is by far the most beautiful thing out on the system right now. No pop-in, no visible clipping, no slowdowns except between sections... This game is downright flawless. It's hack and slash, but so versatile, it is really unfair to be compared with ANY other hack and slash game... Running up walls is so fun, and pulling off combos is very satisfying.

As for weird things, The game is full of blood, yet the enemies don't seem to have any internal organs... They just burst in a spray of blood and leave no body behind (except the body you kill in a cutscene) This game is quite difficult, but I have been able to get farther and farther every time i play, so the learning curve isn't too steep.

Next up on the list is resistance... Ok... This game is good-looking, too... It doesn't look as good as NGS, but it is the first game I've ever played that had a texture that looked good inches from the camera... I know it's really geeky to say something like this, but I loved staring at the soldier's helmets... The nets on the helmets always looked clean, no matter how far you were from them... Other textures suffered from the normal closeup problems.

Aside from how it looks (which is really good... definitely better than the Halo 3 beta, but not quite up to par with Gears of War... in its favor, unlike gears, there is no pop-in and no slowdown, despite how much larger the fields are) this game is... Well, it's absurdly difficult. Unlike something like Halo or Unreal Tournament, you don't gain your life back for waiting... Or, rather, you do, just not all of it. You can only gain up to the nearest quarter of life you lost. This means you die really quickly and a lot... Plus, while I'm sure this is changable on the full version, the controls leave a bit to be desired... Why is the fire button on R1, instead of on R2 like EVERY OTHER FPS GAME? I end up switching weapons accidentally all the time because I try to fire with the trigger, which would make sense... No, though, you fire with the flat shoulder button... Not the trigger... Freaking lame...

Also, unlike Halo, the checkpoints in this game are few and far between... You can usually progress pretty well on Halo by simply rushing to the checkpoints... If you try to rush it on this game, you'll die. Plain and simple.

One thing I really DO like about this game, though, is the Auger... Shooting through walls and shields is my new favorite thing to do... Not quite as awesome as the hammer of dawn, but it's pretty high up the list of favorite weapons... I'd venture to say the Auger could make multiplayer a bit unbalanced... Sort of like the rocket launcher on Halo, the auger is the ultimate weapon in Resistance.

UPDATE: Finally beat level 2!!! Just gotta beat level 1, now...

I'm gonna try to beat this demo, though... If I can beat it, then I may consider picking up the full game. UPDATE: Wow... I'm really liking this... Too bad i can't test multiplayer... It's not hard to see why this game has the highest attach rate of all the games on the PS3 (about 2/3 of all PS3 owners have resistance, and those that don't have it probably live in Japan) Insomniac made BANK on this game, when people said that couldn't be done on the PS3... not only taht, but the game was RUSHED to hit the system at launch... They only had a year with the dev kits... One year...

Then there's Armored Core and Gundam Dynasty warriors... Let's just say, both of these games will bore anyone to tears that isn't a mech fan (or, with GDW, at least a Dynasty warriors fan) If you just want to play a fun game, neither of these fit the bill... Incredibly boring. Gundam's the worse of the two, because it screams anime cheese...

Next up: Super Rub a Dub... Hahahaha, this game is so cute and so weird... It's basically a Wii game. The controls are entirely tilt. You tilt a bathtub to move the duck around and collect little ducks, all the while trying to avoid the sharks... It's very fun, but the later levels get really hard... I will probably buy the full version (I believe it's 5 ducks... I mean bucks, sorry, been playing it too long, got puns on the brain)

Blast Factor is sort of like a much faster version of asteroids, I think... Not much to it.

Lemmings? It's the same game you played on PC back in the early nineties, only prettier. And without the nuke button, so it's about half as fun as it used to be.

Finally, Genji... It's crap... Seriously, especially after playing Ninja Gaiden, Genji is just a sub-par hack and slash game... It's way too slow (or maybe Ninja Gaiden is too fast?) and way too unnatural in the coloring, with way way too much bloom... Since it's made by the same team that's made Folklore, it's worrying me about folklore... Someone said you can download stuff from the Japanese store if you make a second account, which I may have to try, so I can get the Folklore demo... At least the story and music and visuals and... Well... Everything looks better in Folklore, so it's obvious Genji was just a pathetic launch title and I'll leave it at that.

I only have 2 more high profile demos to get: GTHD and Motorstorm, both racing... The motorstorm demo is sorta iffy (I actually played that demo) because the full version just looks way better, it really gives the wrong impression of the game... As for GTHD, it's just showing off the HD abilities of the PS3... Not much game there, really, except showing off a few cars... i'll just get it because it's free

Oh, and the PS3 will play the same video files my PSP will... Well, most of them... Not the AVCs, for some reason... I think there are other video files the PS3 can play that the PSP can't, and some videos actually run better on the PSP than on the PS3... Go figure. I'll stock my PS3 up with anime, methinks.

Last thing is the feel of it... If you've used a PSP before, you know how to use a PS3... Ever since PSP, sony started putting the "Cross (X) Media (M) Bar (B)" on their stuff... TVs, portables, and the PS3 all have the same menu system. Unlike the PSP, the PS3's XMB is lacking in some upgrades... You can't yet do custom backgrounds, for instance... You'd think they'd put that in there right away, since it IS in the PSP... Whatever...

Then there's the store... It really is just a crappy website... The store should have been set up in the XMB. They lose the overall feeling of cohesiveness to their product by making it some crappy website. Also, since it IS just some crappy website, it would be awesome if they had let you download the demos onto your computer, without having to use the PS3, but alas, you have to connect with the PS3... Lame...

Well, those are my impressions after the first 3 days of owning it...

On the third day, I beat level 2 of Resistance, I finally got to the first checkpoint on level one in resistance, I beat the survival mission (Rachel's Mission) on Ninja Gaiden, and I beat all 5 tubs on the Rub a Dub demo... All those reviewers that gave Rub a Dub such low scores were obviously expecting these 5 dollar games to be up to par with 50 dollar wii titles, and that's just not gonna happen. They're cheap for a reason, and it's perfectly fun for a 5 dollar game.

That's about it...

Hey, somebody on CAA that I can discuss experiences on the PS3.

While I think this game in its genre is the most technically sound in gameplay, I do see several issues that I cannot ignore especially when compared to its competitors. Thus, I cannot say it is flawless. Maybe I would write a review to elaborate on that.

That being said, I bought the game when it came out and I highly recommend it.

Resistance really starts to shine in the latter half of the game in every aspect, in my opinion. Let us just say I like it when it snows.

Yes, you can change controls in the full game, though I never felt the need. The controls made sense to me, considering what L2 and R2 were used for... but to each his own, I suppose.

Bobtheduck wrote:If you try to rush it on this game, you'll die. Plain and simple.
Yep. Take cover, assess the situation, and utilize your weapons to their fullest capabilities. If you rush in for glory, you will be a corpse.

The Bullseye is my bread and butter in the single player campaign. Actually, the Auger could really make you vulnerable in a few situations and give you a false sense of security....

It shows Insomniac really deserves to be considered a top-tier developer. Also, they have improved upon their engine and now using it for R&D: Tools of Destruction, and they will be making a Resistance sequel... and that will look phenomenal.

Bobtheduck wrote:Blast Factor is sort of like a much faster version of asteroids, I think... Not much to it.
Forget Blast Factor. Get Super Stardust HD. That game is awesome if you want a shoot-em-up.

Bobtheduck wrote:Finally, Genji... It's crap...

That game was originally developed for the PS2.... So... yeah. Giant Enemy Crab FTL.

Downloadable games I recommend purchasing right now would be Tekken 5 DR (or you can wait when they add in Online Play and a Practice Mode later) and Super Stardust HD. I am hesitating with Calling All Cars since it is $10 and there is no demo.

Oh yeah, I got no friends on my friends list. So if any CAA PS3 owner is interested, PM me to be friends. I don't have a bluetooth headset... since I am considering the retail version of Warhawk that comes with one.
Find me on Steam, PlayStation Network (OmegaAmen), Backloggery, Twitter, and Twitch.tv

I am also in the Christian gaming group, Tribe of Judah in the Christian Gamers Alliance.

Bad news...

I know the PS3 is a quality piece of hardware, but... I'm gonna have to send my PS3 back... I'm in that <1% of PS3 owners with faulty hardware... For some reason, the visuals will suddenly change from normal to all the brights becoming this electric pink and green... It looks really ugly, and some of the brighter games (such as motorstorm) become near unplayable...

I don't know what to do about it... I've been thinking it may be an overheating issue, but I played it in a room at about 60 degrees (Fahrenheit, not sure of the celsius equivalent) and it still did it... It started by doing it a little the first day I got it, then it did it occasionally, and now it's doing it consistantly, and I can't stop it, no matter how long I wait it out ...

I'm trying to make a vid for youtube to show what's happening, but it honestly doesn't do the problem justice, as youtube tends to muddy everything anyhow... The vid is in the process of uploading now...

I will be calling Sony in the morning, but I'm afraid it won't be under warranty since I got it off eBay...

Just one more thing to **** me off... I was having so much fun with this thing before that happened...
