Fruits Basket and Gunslinger Girl. I felt like they were both too open-ended.

I actually like open endings, as it leaves more room for the characters to live their lives beyond the confines of the series.

Anyway, my vote for severly dissapointing ending goes to "Pilot Candidate", or as I've come to call it "Evangelion-Lite!" Seriously, as though this 13 episode series didn't have enough going against it after being lauded as an Eva copy, it also has the stigma of not having an ending! The last scene of the last televised episode showed the series protagonist Zero (Also known as "Rei" several times throughout the series in flashbacks, but he has brown hair and blue eyes like Shinji) and his competition Hied (Who is a DEAD ringer for Evangelion's Kaworu with red eyes and light colored hair--but a complete 180 in terms of attitude) standing back to back in profile against a beautiful Zion background. Fade to black, roll credits. That's all folks! There was one OAV episode, but from what I understand, it didn't wrap anything up!

Although, technically, the creators did give us some idea about what happens to Zero]

Oh, I agree with you completely, but in some cases, there's a difference between an artifully done open ending, (like the one you mentioned--one that honestly leaves room for the characters to grow and move beyond the story arc) and a production mandated open ending (budget contstraints, behind-the-scenes drama with the production staff, etc...).

I felt very unfulfilled after that one too. It probably had to be a little hard to finish out, story-wise, since Sunao Yoshida - the author of the novels - died right as the anime was announced.

Though, I've heard rumors of a second season? Granted, this was forever ago.

Epidemic Xero wrote:As much as I love Trigun, the ending felt a little rushed. There was no time for any sort of aftermath... They just had to squeeze it into some still shots in the credits. I really would've wanted to see more.

I rather enjoyed that one, though I'd seen it long before I even picked up a volume of TriMax. Now I prefer the manga storyline to the anime anyway so XD

Blue Gender...then again, the whole show was a let down (for a show that has NO negative reviews on the internet...)

I dunno. Far too often, leaving that door at the end requires the show to rob it's climax of any real power. Without a really solid resolution, all the lead up that came before is pretty seriously devalued. It doesn't HAVE to be that way (I think FMA tied everything up very well while still setting the film up), but more often than not, it is.

EXACTLY. Most of those "futures" just came out of NOWHERE. Was there ever ANY indication that any of these characters were interested in cooking noodles or being an astronaut or becoming an detective or whatever. NO! Two years of character development were just tossed out the window. NOT a good way to wrap up your show (and compare it to the last episode of Tamers. THAT was an ending!)

Oh, and Pilot Candidate. Don't get me started. I don't think that even counts as an ending. All of a sudden it's just over.Honestly, I wasn't that big a fan of the show in the first place, but still!

I started thinking after reading some of the different anime that everyone talked about on the thread.
I know some anime have been redone or updated from the original series. Like "Oh My Goddess" to "Ah My Goddess"
Maybe the artist and studios will look at doing updated storylines, art, and dialog for some of them.
Its a thought so as to bring in a better ending than the original.

There are NO negative reviews for Blue Gender?! o_o
How odd...
I didn't think it was horrible, really....but, it was pretty forgettable as a whole. Definitely not one of Adult Swim's winners.
(Ah...that just reminded me of the....infamous edit in one of the last episodes. ^ ^;; )

Infamous is putting it lightly...but, back on subject....

I was actually satisfied with the ending of Blue Gender. It was a pretty good series. I thought I was going to hate it after the first couple episodes, but overtime, when Marlene became a little softer, I kinda grew into it!

I WAS a bit letdown at the ending to Midori Days. Granted, it wrapped up all the character arks, but it was kinda...flat, and predictable...

I finish the Please Teacher and Please Twins DVDs and I thought there should be a sequal to these.
With Please Twins you have a boy and two girls, 15 years old, trying to figure which of the girls is his twin sister based on a photo of them as toddlers as they come to live together in the same house thats in photo minus their parents who abandoned them and left them in orphanages or adopted out to different families.
The only thing that makes them twins is that all three of them have blue eyes. After they have found out who is the twin. The other girl is found to have been a neighbor who was in the photo with the boy but becomes the boy's love interest.
Now I would think a sequal be right to have the parents come back to find their children and explain why they did what they did.
Also in the two series there are characters who show up at different times for different reasons.
One is Ichigo Morino who has a medical disorder the same as the teacher's husband which has caused both of them to go into commas years before making them appear young but are older than they appear.
Now Ichigo has no boyfriend through both series and has meddled in everyones love affairs putting people together, so why not give her one in the sequal that will help her with her disorder and the teacher's husband.

A month or so ago I watched Haibane Renmei and was a little disappointed with the whole thing. Then again, I'm not a "slice of life" animation guy. The ending was probably the most memorable event in the entire show but; when the credits start rolling you ask yourself, "Did I really have to watch all of that?"

I thought the ending of Noir was a bit unfulfilling.

Oh, and remember the spoiler codes when you're going into details about the endings of series...

In my opinion, the only reason why Inuyasha ended the way it did, was because after about eight years of going on and on like the energizer bunny, they just ran out of ideas...I mean, pure, flat, out. Not even anymore , 'monster of the week', ideas. It was just gone. End.

And as far as gunslinger girl goes...I like open endings...just not so open that the story falls out the back of the ending.

That's a good way of putting it. I think way too many anime use the concept of open endings as a substitute for an end rather than a component of it.
