Favorite Anime Era

Postby rsnumber2 » Wed Apr 18, 2007 10:42 am

Just curious. I typically seperate Anime into three groups or eras.

  • Early - Pre 1985 eg Astro Boy - Mobile Suit Gundam
  • Middle - 1985 to 1999 eg Macross - Ghost in the Shell
  • Late - 1999 and after eg Gundam Seed - Yu Gi Oh!

The earlier anime was still developing. Although entertaining, some animation can be pretty painful to watch. The middle, was still hand drawn, but had bits of the beginings of CG interspersed throughout. The later stuff, which seems to be mostly CG, seems in some respects, too clean.

I was curious to see what most of the members on this thread preferred the best and why.

My personal favorite is the middle age of the three. I like the "grittines," if you could call it that. It seems to add a texture, that is lacking a little nowadays. The lines seems to flow better, too , as you can see the artist's hand in each frame.
It takes bad jokes to appreciate the good ones.

This is tough cause I like anime that came from all three eras. Like Astro Boy, Bleach, Gundam Wing, etc. Hmm... I will go with the Late era as my favorite.

Late Era, as most of my favorite series fall neatly under that heading, though I haven't had that much exposure to the other two.

Gosh... I don't really like to toss out blanked endorsements of any whole group of anime, but... I guess I'd say late 80s: the heyday of feature length SciFi. Also, I too like the feel of all that hand animation. Good stuff.

Didn't see that one comming...:eyeroll:

Anyway, I would have to agree with rsnumber2 and go with the middle era. I also kinda favor the bit of grain lack of polish of some of the anime of that time. It really takes your attention off the animation, and focuses it on the story. Nowadays, we have this highly polished, CG infused anime, and we're more focused with how sharp the picture is or how high a quality the sound is that we tend to ignore the actual story.

I also like this era because it's the era that sparked the eternal question: "Which came first: Digimon or Pokemon?" Man, we were dumb back then!

For me, I consider 2 "big years for anime" to be 1996 and 2002. Both of them had tons of great anime favorites (as well as extremely) popular series. Well, I guess within a year or so of each other too^^ As for eras, yeah I'm stuck between the two of great series, and great animation of nowadays.

EDIT: I just want to point out that this doesn't mean any on era pwns all others. This just infers a general fondness towards one or the other in general.

I don't think I have a definite answer, because what matters most to me in anime isn't directly related to the eras. Certainly one has to contain more series I enjoy than the others, and it is probably Late, but I term it "favorite" only by default. The only certain statement I would make is that I dislike Early.

What matters most to me is fluid animation, regardless of style. Ghost in the Shell has this, in addition to other older anime, and basically all the mainstream Late anime titles (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece) do not. However, improving technology does make better animation more common, so I suspect this creates a slight bias toward later series.

probably the late era is my type. most of my favorite anime series are from the late era. some are older like hajime no ippo or cowboy bebop. but others like the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya, monster, FMA, ect are newer...

Regardless, I'd say the Late Era. I <3 Moe.

They are called examples.

Just pick an era you like and don't give him a hard time about it.

I'm gonna go with the middle. Call me oldschool, but I think it looks better hand drawn. this CG stuff, though, yes, it's improving, just looks too rigid and unnatural.

In terms of animation and for holding my favorite series (Rurouni Kenshin), I'll have to go with the middle era.

I can't choose. I like Anime from all the era's. Although I do generally watch the modern era of Anime mostly, so I suppose I could choose that.
