Gake no ue no Ponyo. Hayao Miyazaki's next work.

Postby Alexander » Sat Apr 14, 2007 8:30 pm

To anyone who is mildly interested in Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli, (me being a fanatic including having an avatar of Taeko from one of their films ) then you can all get even more excited as last month on NNN News in Japan, his next film was revealed titled "Gake no ue no Ponyo" which means, "Ponyo on a Cliff" when translated into English.

Image

The film is about a gold fish princess named Ponyo who wishes to become human. She is later discovered by a young boy named Sosuke. Other then that, not very many details on the story are known other then that one of the themes is about the connection between a child a parent.

The film will not make use of any CGI animation which Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Tales of the Earthsea relied upon heavily. Instead, this film will be completely hand drawn in water-colors.

However, due to the time taken to create it, this film will not be released in Japan until summer of 2008. So we all have plenty of time to be patient and run around screaming in excitement.

Sounds good! (Actually Spirited Away had very little CGI - if you've seen the Japanese documentary) but watercolours will be interesting.

Although I heard about this when the news first came out, I guess I missed the fact about the entirely done in watercolours thing... Wow, sounds kinda experimental, but I see it working out...

GAH I'M EXCITED.

I am in love with Hayao Miyazaki's work. *dies*

I've seen almsot everythinggggggggggg I MUST SEE THIS.

OH and also, there is a movie coming out made by Hayao Miyazaki's son. It's about a dragon, i believe, and its coming out soon.

here, Tales of Earthsea:

(ゲド戦記, Gedo Senki?, loosely Ged's War Chronicles) is a feature anime film from Studio Ghibli, released in Japan on July 29, 2006,[1] to be distributed in the USA by Walt Disney Pictures and in Australia by Madman Entertainment. It was directed by first-timer Gorō Miyazaki, son of Hayao Miyazaki. The movie is based primarily on the third book of the Earthsea series, The Farthest Shore, by Ursula K. Le Guin. A manga adaption of the film has been published in Japan.

For now it's only in Japan. The SciFi Channel has exclusive film rights to Tales of Earthsea in America for at least another year or so.

I'm glad to hear that SOMEONE is keeping the old animation techniques alive.

Sci-fi owns the rights to the LA movie of Tales From EarthSea untill 2009, it will not be being getting a dub or will it make it here to the states, untill Sci-fi Channel deal ends in 2009.

I was wondering if that was the live action version that they aired on Sci Fi that people were talking about when they were talking about Tales of Earthsea.

As far as Miyazaki's latest goes,I do hope when they bring it over that they release a subbed as well as a dubbed version. My favorite when they aired The Month of
Miyazaki on TCM was Only Yesterday because it was completely subtitled.

The only reason why Only Yesterday was showed in subtitled only is, because there is no dub for it. Pixar/Disney has it shelved and so far no plans on releasing a dvd of the anime to the USA.

Canada is the only place in North America that you can get the English-subtitled DVD.

Which is beyond unfortunate. *hugs import copy*

And isn't it confusing too? If they wouldn't translate it here just because of the girls discussing periods, then how on Earth did Princess Mononoke get published by them here, which had extremely graphic scenes of violence?

Also, Ghibli World has some sketch images of Ponyo. http://www.ghibliworld.com/news.html#0204

Who could this mysterious red haired person be?

Also, the children have a very Totoro appearence like Mei and Satsuki.

Princess Mononoke didn't have extreme graphic violence. It had some violence but it was more gross than gorey. Akira is way worse and so are many others.
Or do you mean it was graphic for a Ghibli movie?

I might have different opinions then some of you, but I feel that having a scene with a Samurai's head being cut off his body by an arrow along with showing it on screen as "extreme graphic violence".

No, there wasn't any gore or excessive amounts of blood, but my body still shivers at the sight of body parts being cut off without being taken off screen.

Not confusing at all. Miramax, which is a subsidiary of Disney bought the rights to Princess Mononoke. But they wanted to edit the flim, so that it would have a PG rating and not a PG-13 rating.

Since Miyazaki wouldn't let them edit the movie, Miramax release it uncut and it kept the PG-13 rating.

I don't think Only Yesterday's lack of availability has anything to do with being from a female perspective. It's just a VERY kind of film from most Ghibli offerings. While I think it's well done for the near-Lifetime movie it is, I can see why The Powers That Be would think it wouldn't interest much of the Western anime audience. It's not exactly the fastest moving story ever animated.

As for Ponyo, who wrote it? Is it Miyazaki's own story, or is this adapted from another source like Howl's Moving Castle?

Ponyo is his own story. From what I've heard, it's based partially upon his relationship with Goro when he was five years old. Which makes me even more excited because while Ghibli has made some incredible films being based on books or manga, I always love it best when they work on their own ideas.

And Roy, I did know that. I just can't get the idea out of my head that Miramax doesn't follow Disney's ethics as closey. So you'll have to forgive me for my error. XD

Which brings me to another question, why don't THEY publish Omohide for America then?

SQUEE!!! *runs around screaming head off*

Though I have by no means watched every one of Studio Ghibli's films, the few I have are instant favorites of mine. Good Disney movies like Beauty and the Beast or Brother Bear have their place, but they pale in comparison to Miyazaki's films. And now I'm going to continue screaming my head off until this strange goldfish story comes to the US!!!

*rushes off screaming*

THAT'S good to hear. The thing I didn't like about Howl's was that Miyazaki's instincts seems to run counter to the focus of the source material. The rumblings I'd heard after Spirited Away was that he wasn't going to both write AND direct movies anymore because it was too much work. Good to see that's not the case.

Whisper of the Heart was a little on the slow side too, and that ended up on video. Well, I'm not saying it was bad, but I did think it was a little slow...

Yeah, it's a great movie! I'm just saying that slow or not, if a movie is good and the public wants it, it should be released.

And I'd like to see Only Yesterday.

You should, it's absolutely worth it.

I'd imagine Whisper of the Heart made a DVD release because of its connection to The Cat Returns, plus the animation is still pretty flashy in places. Aside from one or two daydream moments (and maybe the ending), Only Yesterday could easily have been done as a live action movie. Not only does is LOOK more realistic than just about any other Ghibli film (save Grave of the Fireflies), but the story is way more slice-of-life and reflective. I mean, Whisper of the Heart may not be a wild fantasy, but it's shojo story is still a very different beast from Only Yesterday.

It's too bad that the higher-ups seem to be viewing this as a problem, though. One of the anime industry's biggest problems right now is that too many people are sticking to what's been done often before. I think Only Yesterday is a perfect example of how the animation medium can be stretched to different kinds of films. Oh well...

Or Ghibli in general. They're famous for doing things differently then not only Anime, but animation in general. Can you even compare another animated film to Grave of the Fireflies?

Also, I second that effort. If you live in America then importing is the only way. But the blind purchase is beyond worth it. And yes, while it could have very well been a live animation, it wouldn't have, I feel, impacted me as much. There's that extra little touch you feel when Taeko's cheeks start blushing just slightly while her eyes grow just slightly and you realize she's in love...

And you have to admit, the art is absolutely gorgeous.

Hmmm. I wonder, should I just make this topic into a Ghibli News/General Discussion topic? It seems to be turning into that...

Miyazaki is on another project! YES! Nowadays, a whole lot of animated pieces get flung on the big screen but many of them have absolutely no story telling in them. I'm happy someone with talent is ready to provide another genuine animated story.

Not to mention that it's a movie actually built from the ground up as a MOVIE, not just the special, 90 minute episode of a TV show...
