how do your parents feel about anime?

My Mom still dosen't like anime but the other day she tryed to watch naruto with me and she said that orochimaru form Naruto was kinda cute.

Here's the closest coversation I've had with my mom about anime. This is the conversation we had when my Pilot Candidate DVD's came in the mail:

"Josh, what came in the box?"

"Just some japanese animation...kinda like Star Trek."

::Mom Cocks head to one side::

"Japanese Animation? Oh."

::Walks out room::

Safe to say, my mom's attitude towards anime is a very safe "Meh."

As of late my parents haven't been giving too much of a care for anime. I think it's because my smart sister has slowly talked it over with them.

I even can be intolerant to anime at times due to symbolic aspects. I'm just like that I guess? haha

Well my mom gets a little worried about violence, outfits and long haired pretty-boys in anime. Espeshaly the long haired pretty-boys. My sister and I tried to pick up FF7:AC at wallmart and the moment she saw Sephiroth she freaked out. She gets kind of worried about it being Japanese aswell.

But Desperate Housewives is TOTALY appropriate. -sarcasm-

My dad sees it as an artistic medium when I draw it, but as a silly cartoon or comic book when I enjoy it.

I've watched Berserk, AKIRA, Ghost in the Shell (film), Ninja Scroll, Neon Genesis Evangelion and The End of Evangelion with my dad (along with a few episodes of Kino's Journey, Gungrave, Trigun and Haibane Renmei). He finds them to be ok but doesn't get overly excited (he liked Ghost in the Shell though . My parents trust me (I think) and don't have a problem with anime. Heck, they hung out Otakon for an hour or so when I went two years ago.

I have to say, I really don't like the anti-anime movement in Christianity. Anyway who completely dismisses ideals will never find their way.

Anyways, my parent's don't like it and they don't hate it. It's just not their thing. I mean, I'm at an age that my mom said I am pretty much now accountable to God for the things I do, and I fully realize that. That's pretty much why she wouldn't allow Pokemon in the house when we (my brother and I) were a lot younger. I don't really think she cares too much now (but that doesn't mean she has to like what I like; she's always not liked Stitch, Monsters Inc. (in general, though she will watch it and is quite tolerant of it), and some other things).

Now, as for my dad, he's actually made fun of what I was watching. Like, he decided to watch Nausicaa with me, because he read the back of the box at the store, knew I had it, and said it sounded interesting and he wanted to see if it was any good (sorry if that didn't make too much sense; my fingers tend to ramble sometimes in long and somewhat incoherent sentences). I could tell he got bored halfway (or probably even sooner; and maybe he didn't even care that Patrick Stewart was in it) because he started cracking jokes like, "Did she mention she's a size six?" "(About Asbel) Oh, he's definitely not a size six," and "Here comes the dashing hero!" (Note: these jokes were in reference to aweight-loss commercial that was popular at the time and played A LOT.) Also, when everyone called the...whatever-it-is a "glider," my dad was like, "It's NOT a glider! It's got an engine on it!" (He has a point.) And when he was watching Whisper of the Heart briefly over my shoulder when I was on my computer, he said, "That girl just poured water out of the hot-shot (water heater brand name) into a tea kettle and put it on the stove??" Well, I gotta say, that kind of puzzled me as well. I love the comments he makes, but I can't always watch a movie with jokes being cracked every minute or so. Oh well, he's still funny.

A few months ago I read a Christian magazine for teenagers that had an article on Anime. Feeling excited, I grabbed it right away only to my dismay to find it had only a two page article on it. But still having hope, I read through it to further my dismay when I found out the whole article was a warning against Anime in general for it's content. It wasn't making anti-anime statements, but I could tell that the writer had never seen any form of it at all. Considering he mentioned warnings against Spirited Away and Kiki's Dilevery Service, only writing about how they were academy award winning films but questionable. And the cupe de la grace of the article was near the end about a story of a 14 year old boy who had fallen into H, furthering their warning about Anime in general. However, he didn't make a full anti statement against it, and gave advice at the end of how to watch out for what you read and see. However, to my dismay, this article could be used for any form of art in the world.

And after my mother read the article, I had to have a little discussion with her in my own defense for being interested in the art, including me owning Spirited Away.

Anyways, my parents today are supportive of my interests in it. My dad is a casual fan of it, he's watched a few Ghibli films that he's really enjoyed (Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies). While my mom isn't interested at all, but she doesn't mind my interest in it. Although she has secretly showed a slight love for Totoro ("Oh look! It's a little baby and mommy Totoro!") and she has admitted that some scenes in Spirited Away are absolutely beautiful. Not to mention they both were really, REALLY happy when I told them I had joined this community.

My younger brother doesn't like it because it's too serious and not "funny enough" in his own words.

My sister is a casual fan, I don't know how much she's seen. But she fully supports my interest.

Lastly, this is my favorite. My grandmother, L-O-V-E-S Anime. She is always enthusiastic about any film I suggest that she might like to watch with me. It's really nice because she's the closest person I have to watch Anime with together.

My gramma likes Green Day and System of a Down, so anything's possible. I could probably get my grandma to watch anime with me.

My grandmother is mostly of German and Scottish heritage along with myself when our ancestors immigrated to America in 1849. As for nationality, she was born in America. So she's American along with me.

I don't know why she likes it so much. My mom can't understand it at all which leads to some very humerus perdicaments. But I personally use it as a way to remind myself that you can enjoy something even if you don't seem like the sort of person who would fit in with it. (Hence why I like A Little Snow Fairy Sugar even though I'm 17 and a boy.)

Both my parents are totally cool with it.

My mom and I were both home sick one day, and we marathoned Trigun. I also got some FMA DVDs for Christmas one year, and she watched those with me. My dad has even watched some Cowboy Bebop with me.

And my sister (though granted, she's not my parent) loves to mock... er watch Trinity Blood and Ouran with me. And hey, anything is made ten times more hilarious with HER commentary.

My mom is the coolest kind you can have: she likes fantasy and good stories, and she likes anime! I think it started with My Neighbor Totoro. We have some Japanese friends, and once when we were visiting they pulled out My Neighbor Totoro for my little sisters to watch. My mom saw snippets of it, and as I was gradually becoming aware of anime we bought a few Miyazaki movies. The whole family watched them, and everyone but my dad is now a huge Miyazaki fan. One day, I was talking about anime with my brother, and suddenly we wondered: Would Mom like Fullmetal Alchemist? That was - and remains to this day - my favorite anime, and if my mom didn't like that, she probably wouldn't like any others. When we watched the first episode, she kept on falling asleep because she didn't understand what was going on. I'm not sure exactly when she started getting interested (probably Episode 3), but before long she was practically begging me to watch more. She's a good person to discuss fan stuff with, and we've had several interesting conversations about FMA. She gave me some views I hadn't considered before, such as how she felt sorry for Ed and Al because they don't have a mother, and she even said Ed looks cute when he grins.
As for my dad...well. If he's in the room while we're watching it, he makes fun of the Japanese (if it's the subbed version), saying something like, "Hoijioijiwa!" or asking loudly, "Are you watching one of those JAPANESE CARTOONS?" Then again, he's like that about a lot of things my mom, my brother, and I enjoy. When we watched Howl's Moving Castle as a family, my dad's final assessment was somethign to the effect of: "That was a strange movie." He just doesn't quite get it. The only bit of my fangirldom he takes very seriously is my sincere and serious desire to learn Japanese. He says if I can finish my second year of Latin, he'll get me some CDs so I can start learning. Squee!

I have to admit that in spite of being an anime fan myself, I would not let my kids, or myself, watch Spirited Away b/c of what I had heard about it from
Christian sources. And I love and own other Miyazaki movies too!

But then a month or so ago the movie was on Cartoon Network and my husband watched it with the kids. I was upset at first, but then went in to watch with them. Well, by the end I was very humbled!

I can see why another Christian family could find it objectionable, but we don't. Just another lesson in not letting other people think for me (and trusting my husband's judgement!:) )

My mom doesn't like it. She teases me about it. Whenever I'm watching my Japanese Transformers vids, she says "Oh, they're saying bad words!" (When they're speaking in Japanese) I tried to get her to watch Grave of the Fireflies with me, but she wouldn't.

(My parents see it for what it is: an art form. Just because some of it is hentai doesn't mean that automatically every single Japanese cartoon is hentai. They treat it like any other thing on TV. Only, since they know nothing about any anime, they let me decide what should and shouldn't be watched in the house. I want to get my dad to watch FMA, though, because I think he'd like it a lot. He did like Princess Mononoke, which was cool. My mom's just interested in interior design shows, though, so I don't think there's much she'd like.)

My dad sometimes watched FMA with my sister and I , and he even WANTEd to watch the movie with us. ^_^ He seeed to enjoyit too..

my mom was on the computer one night when Inuyasha came on...and heard two cusswords an got really upset with me though.. :/ i was like "its not any different from cussing on regular tv!"

Seriously, I am an adult, I don't cuss, hearing cusswords doesn't bother me, because I know I would never say them.. ^^;

She seems to trust me okay now though..

I am a bit leary with letting my little sister watch anime... she is only 10, after all.
