Postby craner » Sat Mar 31, 2007 8:42 pm

Can someone quickly leave me some of their favorite animes based around the high school atmosphere. I'm a big fan of those type animes like melancholy of haruhi suzumiya, kanon, ranma, etc. So please tell me your favorites so i can check them out. And even if some of your favs aren't based around schools i'd still like to hear. I just finished samurai champloo and it was amazing. loved it. thanks guys. (I guess i could have posted this in the recommendations thread sorry. this is just easier)

His and Her Circumstances and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya both come to mind for the high school scene. As does Ouran Host Club, but... ;)

I don't know if it really counts, but Midori Days does have quite a few scenes in high school.

On a side note, I think the uniforms in "His and Her Circumstances" are, far and away, the coolest uniforms known to anime!

I'll have to agree with Splitter 2.0; Azumanga Daioh is great.

Angelic Layer, another one of my favorites, doesn't really focus around highschool, but it has school elements (middle school actually), and the school that occassionally makes an appearance is K thru 12.

Azumanga Daioh and DN Angel are my favorites as far as a high-chool setting goes.

School Rumble (which will be coming out soon on region 1) is one that is on the top of my list.

Definitely Azumanga Daioh. When I saw that anime, I felt like I knew every one of those girls. I think every school has students like them.

Both Dual and Neon Genesis Evangelion have parts that take place in school,Dual
probably more so.Another favorite is,of course,Azumanga Daioh.Yukari is the kind of teacher that you'd love to have just because she is such a ditz.Shrine of the Morning Mist,a series I am currently going through also has a school setting.
Of course if you extend the definition a bit one could also include Inuyasha since there are scenes that do take place in Kagome's school when she's back in the
modern world.Prince of Tennis is another anime that has a school setting.

I'm going to second the School Rumble vote since that one hasn't been mentioned as much. Eyeshield 21 is a sports one, but also a high school show. Bleach has lots of high school scenes in it. There's also an unlimited number of mangas based on high school life that you could check out. ;)

You know there are lots of good animes that focus on college life (Honey and Clover) or junior high life (Prince of Tennis, Whistle and... um lots more). Since junior high in Japan is grades 7-9 it's actually rather similar to most of the high school plotlines. So maybe you should consider expanding your focus. :thumb:

Well, there are plenty of Animes I've seen with high school elements or scenes, so I had to draw the line somewhere. Fullmetal Panic! features a lot of high school drama, but the focus is always more on comedy, international intrigue, and mechs.

Azumanga Daioh is the best anime for school life in Japan. It is really close to the real thing...and it is hilarious! Without boy/girl stuff and harem.

I can't believe no one said Cromartie High School...also a good comedy, with thought behind it.

Beck has some elements of school in it, but is mostly about forming a successful band. Almost realistic.

If you want something a little different, check out Gokusen. It's about a new teacher with a really rowdy class - fortunately, she's able to deal with them because she comes from a Yakuza background. (It sounds a bit like GTO, but I've read both and I faarrr prefer Gokusen. The differences are really huge when you get into them). The whole thing is based around the school and the students are all interesting in their own right.

I've only seen the first DVD of the anime, and in my opinion it pales compared to the manga. I mean... there's a freaking talking dog in the anime. O_o;; It feels completely out of place in an otherwise pretty mature storyline. If you want any info on the manga, PM me.

GTO and TMOHS are the two that i recommend to you. however, seeing that you've already seen TMOHS, i suppose that i can only recommend GTO to you.

I thought of FMP as well, but like you, I'd hardly consider it a true school anime.

I would probably consider FMP: FUMOFFU a school anime, though, as the school setting is fairly central to the storyline.

Happy Lesson could probably also go on the list.

Another newer school anime is PaniPoni Dash, which features a 10-year-old (who's a genius in terms of booksmarts, but isn't always socially tactful) teaching a group of 11-year-old girls. Personally I got a kick out of the 3 or so episodes I saw, but the humor isn't for everybody. And before I can really recommend it, I'd try to find out a little more about the morality of it; one of the publicity shots features the 10-year-old flipping the camera a blurred middle finger.
Theme Scripture: Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. (Galatians 5:1)

And a verse for all us single folks: Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? (1 Corinthians 9:5)
