Eureka Seven and Fooly Cooly

Postby KhakiBlueSocks » Sun Mar 11, 2007 9:08 pm

I'm I the only one who notices:

1. How Renton and Naota look and act like they could be related?

2. How Eureka, Anemone (SP?) and Haruko are a lot alike? (more the latter than the former)

3. (Insert your own similarities here)

Well, Gainax did do the 2rd key Animation and in-Between Animation for a few eps of Eureka Seven.

Granted, but beyond the looks, in terms of tone and storyline, aren't there some moments/characters on Eureka 7 that remind you of FLCL?

I have only watch 20 eps of Eureka 7.

But alot of people say that anime is a mix of alot of other animes out there.

I believe this, since if you look at the all the people that work on the script, storyboard and episode Director.

I think they wanted to throw just about ever anime theme known to Japan in Eureka 7

I think everyone at the start notices the similarity between Renton and Naota. It's too obvious to ignore.

No, you're not. Roy pretty much has it right, in my view. One of the reasons I detested Eureuka 7 too much to keep watching it after the first few episodes was how it seemed to be entirely cobbled together from spare parts of other anime, FLCL included.

I actually think that E7 took the best parts of the following and made a great anime:

Evangelion
Outlaw Star
Fooly Cooly
Tenchi Muyo (All series)
Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances)
Joshua: Hebrew -The LORD is Salvation

O_O' I don't see any similarities...

no offence but in my opinion Eureka 7 us about gajillion times better than FLCL. Here is why: Character depth, it's longer than 6 episodes, AND did I mention character depth?

It's not just about robots or anything, these characters are really empathetic to me.. I can relate to them. I couldn't relate to anyone in FLCL because it was just too confusing. I don't want to watch an anime that you need to watch the Director's commentary to understand...

I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with you, my fox freak friend!

I think that FLCL does have a good bit of character development, but it's only centered on one character--Naota. Though it's not clearly obvious on the first, second...or 5th viewing, there is some marked character development in Naota--if you look closely, you can really see that him and Renton are very similiar in attitude as well as physical attributes.

Wow, really? Sure, the beginning episodes aren't the greatest, but overall it's a really great series. And I'm not even a fan of the show.

We of course could go and list all of the influences on Eureka 7 if we had time.
One influence that can't be overlooked is the surfer culture of the 1960s.This is most obvious in the use of the boards, but also in the names of the characters
GIDGET and MOONDOGGIE.

a few of those projects belonged in part to the same production company(s). That means a similar stable of artists and writers, so of course there will be thematic, story, and artistic similarities. It doesn't mean that these things are cobbled together from other shows. Look at Hayao Miyazaki's work. He is considered to be one of the greatest, yet many of the works that Studio Ghibli puts out contain several themes constantly, not hte least of which are Airships and the trials of youth. Always. Nevermind the very distinct art style.

Speaking of, I just have to say that Brother Doggie and TK from Digimon 02 might've shared a womb-- Case in point:

Watch the first episode of both series.

Almost the same "nothing interesting happens here" concept.

I remember in the first episode, Renton said the word "Sucks" every two seconds. XD

Oh yeah, I remember...

There was one particular scene, when the millitary was tearing down his favorite lifting spot and he throws his head back and screams "THIS SUUUUUUCCCCKKKKSSSSSS!!!!!" Priceless!

And he probably doesn't speak the fluent, albeit confusing, street surfer language "Doggie-niisan" does.

Naaah...but he is an artist! ^_^ he has a hat like that too.. :3

I dunno, E7 just seems deeper and more involved than FLCL I mean I have cried so many times on E7 while FLCL just made me raise my eyebrows a bit...

Oh man, that first episode was the worst. XD I stopped watching halfway through the second]frequent[/i] exclamation of "This SUUUUUUCCKKKKS!!!!" nearly had me begging to watch ANYTHING else. O_O wow...Corrie you made a not so great decision XD

I am telling you in ths anime Renton starts out as a whiney brat...but as the series progresses he gets more mature... Something that i found really awesome.

But still.. there is just something about e7.. that isn't like FLCL It's probably all the maturity of the relationships..

I mean I haven't seen all the episodes and I am not exactly sure why Anemone and Eureka exist.. I know they are like recorders for the Scab Corel..but what IS the Scab corel?

Yeah, Raddie give E7 another chance!! It's better than you think. A friend of mine just came into it on episode 40 and she is hooked. (its only got like 6 more episodes left on AS and I have skipped ahead because I thought I was going to be gone.. but wow.. It's.. just WOW!! I cried so hard..

Eureka Seven and FLCL are both good anime's with a lot of layers, it's just that E7 is more like a rose with gentle and well defined layers, while FLCL is like an onion with it's layers--not really defined unless you start peeling!

On their own, Eureka and Anemone (sp) remind me of the good half and the bad half of Haruko on FLCL. Anyone agree?

[quote="ChristianKitsune"]Haruko HAD a good half? O.O]Yeah! She did have a sort of "motherly" side to her, which I interperted as good, and the sadistic, selfish side which I interperted as bad.

I just found this out--another reason why FLCL and Eureka Seven are so much alike in my book. More than 1/2 the cast of FLCL (Dave Mallow, Kari Wahlgren, Jessica Straus, Steve Kramer, Melissa Fahn and Stephanie Sheh) went on to V/A characters in Eureka Seven! Ironic? I think not?

ROFL....that's because...the voice actor industry is pretty closed off...^^; I could say that they are a lot like wolf's rain too, since many of the characters went on to voice in Eureka Seven...

It goes BEYOND V/A's. That was just an observation I made (though it would add to the familarity between the two series).

Haruko HAD a good half? O.O;

Of course she did! Haruko did have a good side! Sure, it didn't come out until the last couple of episodes (Episode #4 - "Full Swing" and Episode #6 - "FLCLimax") , but she did have a good side that was reminicent of Eureka's motherly side.

I think it was a bit more than motherly.I think in the end that Haruko really had genuine feelings for Naota but because he was too young she had to box them in.
btw:So we don't get confused:HARUKO,FLCL;HARUKA,RahXephon. The names,at least in English are certainly similiar looking that it's easy to confuse which show which one is in,at least to me it can be at times.

The fact that Kari Wahlgren is in both FLCL and Eureka 7 probably is just a coincidence.
