Just finished Berserk, seriously disturbed, what happened?

Postby Kai Robin » Sun Mar 11, 2007 10:05 pm

Uh......

I don't know where to start. Just finished watching Berserk, up until an hour ago I was ready to slot it to my fav top 10 list. Sure it was bloody, but the story was intriguing, the characters were deep and believable, the personification was just so real, it seemed a masterpiece. A bloody story full of people's clashes hopes and dreams and then KABLAM!!! near the end and I'm like WUH!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I have seriously never been so disturbed watching something. I mean, people finish watching End of Evangelion and think "man that was so disturing," but that doesn't even hold a candle compared to this. As a dude, man, guy, whatever you wanna call it I'm used to goin out with the guys and watching "manly man" movies filled with action and blood, ect, so I'm pretty much used to the sight of gore, but dear doggiebiscuits Berserk's end just cakes the take.

I'm not sure if I'm more disgusted at what I saw happened or the fact I still wanna know what happens next.....ugh...morbid curiousity....seriously gotta get rid of that.......

I'm so disturbed I wrote a catchphrase backwords....

What kinda of reactions did any of you who watched it have?

The anime barely covers half of the current release of the manga. overall, it'll probably only be about a quarter of the plot. The manga goes much further and deeper in, and it's an awesome ride. Too bad Miura is so slow with the new chapters.

Don't read or watch Berserk, but I understand from everyone who does that the Anime simply cuts off at a certain point where the Manga continues. So if you want to continue Guttsu's tale of bloody revenge, pick up a volume off the shelf.

The story is pretty much the same, but it's still a good idea to read the manga from the beginning since it has a lot of extra plot points that become very important after the Eclipse.

Also: the manga is much more adult than the anime.

I love Berserk.

Sure, it's a pretty mature title, but there is excellent storytelling and character development behind all the bloody and perverted stuff.

The anime is certainly inferior.

like fish and chips and josh said, the anime doesn't get very far before it cuts off. and it cuts off at the worse possible part too. i'd advise that you read the manga in order to see what happens next but be prepared; the manga's a lot more graphic than the anime...

It's like Akira. The movie did not touch 80% of the important details that the manga had.

quite right MSP. however, for the Berkserk anime and manga, 80% is a horrible overestimation...XD

I disagree. Berserk just covers a certain part of the manga, which is roughly the first 12 volumes. It tells a complete story and doesn't really leave much out of the volumes it covers.

Akira, on the other hand, just feels pieced together from a bunch of different parts of the manga with a very different third act.

Also, OP, go back and re-watch the first episode of Berserk. It takes place after episode 25.

Well true. I didn't mean exactly the same, I was referring to how both film versions only had parts of the story.

I personally dislike the anime significantly. It covers the part of Berserk I thought was least worthwhile and has no real meaning due to cutting off at that point. Furthermore, they can't really continue the anime because they shot themselves in the foot by taking out Skull Knight (who is perhaps a third of the reason I read the manga in the first place).

Quoted for emphasis. If you were disturbed by the anime version, the manga version is much more explicit and brutal.

actually, doesn't the anime cover both the Black Swordsman Arc the Golden Arc? i thought that the Golden Arc was one of the best arcs out there because of its in-depth storyline.

From what I understand, the Anime is the whole of the backstory, and that's about it. It introduces Guttsu, goes into his history, and then ends where it begins; so really, no conclusion.

I know this stuff because my roommate reads and loves the Berserk Manga...and I have a thing for browsing Wikipedia late at night.

Hmm.....really bad thing is the anime was left on such a cliffhanger my natural curiosity is kicking in. In the end it wasn't so much the gore that creeped me out as opposed to the fact it was happening to the characters that were endeared to me throughout the entirety of the season in such a mercislessly brutal way.

i know. it's hard to witness characters you've grown so used to experience that kind of thing. however, the background of the main character leaves us with a pretty strong explanation of why he's doing what he's doing in current time. if you want to see what happens next, try the manga.

In the manga Black Swordsman Arc Gutts kills several apostles in several different incidents (not to mention he encounters Godhand Griffith) before it cuts to the flashback, so its really just the beginning of that arc. Actually, most viewers would do well to watch the first episode again after finishing the series. It flows somewhat and is marginally less depressing.

The weird thing is that, in the full scope of the story, none of those characters matter (Caska excepted). They're pretty much there so you can start to care before they die. Arguably they're used for a number of other things, such as to show how far beyond normal humans the threat is and to communicate horror more personally, but their characters are essentially just cannon fodder. Once they're gone more important characters like Scerpico can join up.

it's pretty harsh how the author builds up those characters for a good ten volumes (in terms of manga) and then takes a massive turn plot-wise. i think that the reason for that was to show the impact of the main character and come up with an explanation as for why he's almost a psychopath, and show the VERY hard events that he went through, even as a child...

Ouch, harsh indeed. I am glad to see there might be some hope for Caska, she was amazing and beatiful character. I was dissapointed after looking online I couldn't find any good PVC figures or garage kits of her, though there were some real cool ones of Guts/Gutz/Gats/Gatz/Gattsu I'm thinking about buying. I went to the local B&N but they didn't have any berserk, I really am intruiged about what happens.

Speaking of Berserk, does anyone know if there's a good Berserk game for PS2? I remember seeing one while in Japan before but I have no clue if its any good.

Hey thanks for your help! I decided against reading the spoiler but when I quoted you it came back up and I was like no! I managed to cover it up before I caught it thankfully.

It looks like a quality game but I guess I have to catch up on the manga before buying it.
