I thought this was pretty nifty, though I've never been an avid DB or DBZ fan myself. Apparantly back in 2004, they decided to re-release the original Dragon Ball Manga in a new 34 volume collection "Bigger than the old edition, with new covers and an altered storyline." But the coolest feature of this edition was the fan art.

Whether you've ever tried to attain a power level of over 9,000 or not, no true fan of Anime can deny Dragon Ball's place as a classic of the genre, and a forerunner of Anime coming to America, paving the way for other series you enjoy. Inside that link, 18 current Mangakas who were influenced and enjoyed Dragon Ball growing up have volunteered artwork depicting their own artistic takes of the series. So enjoy.

Thats actually really intriguing to see the art, and to see how so many of the current artists had been influinced enough to take up a pen in support of a series. I think the most surprising one was Tanemura Arina.

Yeah, I know. And frankly, Hirano's submission freaked me out. Knowing his sense of humor, not sure if I want the kanji in his piece translated.

'Fraid not. The focus of the article was the artwork. My guess, though, is they just hammered out some continuity issues, if there were any, maybe changed a few things around.

Though I never read Full Moon Wo Sagashite (just didn't really strike me as something I'd be in to), I have several friends who are huge fans of it. Somehow seeing Arina's artwork depicting Goku and Bulma is... just really cool on some level. Hillarious to me. Also, I loved DBZ, but only later in my Anime Fandom. IMHO, there is no one better to take on a remake of Dragon Ball than Masashi Kishimoto! Man, Naruto is like a successor to the series in so many ways. Good stuff! Thanks for showing!

HAHA. I LOVE the Tanemura one. XD I'm a huge fan of her art and some of her manga, so seeing that is pretty awesome (and Trunks looks like Izumi! XD). DBZ and Pokemon were pretty much my first introductions to the anime world. Both are nostalgic to me, but DBZ even more so, so even though I don't consider DBZ to be my favorite anime, or even one that I watch very often, I certainly can't deny its place as a classic in the anime world.

Actually, it just dawned on me: this should be in Manga, not Anime. Mod please?
And personally I like Kubo Taito's (Bleach), Ken’ichi Sakura's (Drive Dragoon), Norihiro Yagi's (Claymore) and Eichiro Oda's (One Piece) attempts best.

I hadn't seen all of that compiled; some of it was interesting. Admittedly, I'm a fan of the Dragonball manga (terribly generic and predictable, I know, but generally solid work and it shaped the industry).

Well, what you need to remember for Dragon Ball is that it probably started all those now cliche' elements in other Manga and Anime series; but at the time, it was fresh and new, and that's what mattered.

The shonen genre with battles of ever-increasing intensity has been around longer than Dragonball. I stand by my statement: the premise is nothing extraordinary and the plot is rather formulaic. However, you do have a valid point, I'd merely restate it somewhat: Dragonball revolutionized the shonen archetype and, at the time, managed to give a tired formula some new life.
Even today I feel the manga is superior to some newer series. As I said, I'm a fan. I just don't think it quite deserves to be considered original.

That he does, Kyoto, that he does. I've yet to see any Anime power up cooler than the original Super Saiyan transformation.
