Favorite Anime Character Over 20...

Postby Stiletto » Wed Jan 24, 2007 8:42 pm

Since most shows tend to center around characters who are in their teens or pre-teens, I was wondering about your favorite anime character(s) over the age of twenty, and why do you think highly of them?

I have a tie between Nobue Itou (20) from the Strawberry Marshmallow anime, and Reki (who looks around her early twenties) in Haibane Renmei.

I guess my reason for picking Reki would be because of her mature, caring personality. Even though she has endured much given her situation in the anime, Reki retains a strong sense of maturity that I find very admirable, especially with regard to Rakka. Nobue is similar, but less so in that she doesn't outwardly show it as much. In fact, whenever one of the girls (Miu) in the show gets her angry, Nobue can get into some pretty hilarious fits (which I find both funny and cute).

Coincidentally both happen to be casual smokers...

Ichinomiya Kantarou from Tactics is a university graduate, so that places him in the 20+ demographic. :3 The guy is just the coolest anime protagonist ever - he's got the sort of conniving personality you rarely see in the hero.

In second would be Tyki Mick from D.Gray-man. Because he steals peoples internal organs and feeds them to flesh eating butterflies. Yummeh. 8D

Favorite: Haruka Suzumiya -- Rumbling Hearts

Minor spoiler alert -- Spoiler for Volume 1 of Rumbling Hearts
Haruka demonstrates forgiveness, forgiving Narumi for his constant blunders during the first two episodes of Rumbling Hearts. When she wakes from her coma in episode 4, one can't help but pity her for everything she has lost...
Which brings me to ...

MAJOR spoiler alert -- This will spoil the ENDING for RUMBLING HEARTS -- which hasn't been completely released in the USA. You have been warned.
Haruka demonstrates great wisdom and maturity in the final episode of Rumbling Hearts, recognizing that both she and Takayuki have changed immensely in the time since the accident, and essentially 'letting go' of her relationship. The scene where she and Takayuki part for the very last time brings me to tears every time I have watched it -- which is 14 times.
Of course, the validity of that selection is questionable. Haruka's age is somewhat indeterminate. For the majority of the show, her age I would presume to be anywhere from 19-21.

Reki -- Haibane Renmei -- Somehow I feel I can relate to Reki far too well.

Hakuoro -- Utawarerumono -- He kills people ... with a FAN. How can you not like him?

Admiral Spoor -- Banner of the Stars -- Her sarcastic attitude amuses me far more than it probably should.

Sai Nanohana -- Jubei-chan -- He's just cool like that.

Minamo Kurosawa -- Azumanga Daioh -- I deal regularly with a girl a lot like Yukari, so I guess I just pity her in a lot of ways.

Yomiko Readman -- Read Or Die -- Cute. Paper master. What more reason do I need?

Morita Shinobu -- Honey and Clover -- If I acted on my impulses, I might act a whole lot like this guy. (Un)fortunately, I have too much self-control for that.

Mullen Shetland -- Last Exile -- Mullen's self-sacrificial nature and bravery exemplify qualities that I wish I had more of.

Hibiki Amawa -- Strawberry Eggs -- A man with many flaws fighting for sexual equality in an oppressed school -- even if his methods are a bit unorthodox.
Embraced by a gentle breeze, my heart breaks as I think of you.
All alone at the top of the hill, I watch as the seasons go by.
--
Wishing for courage softly, I pray.
There's no going back now, to those tender days when you held me in your arms.

Always beena fan of Reki and her tale (just noticed know I've been typing in "Reiki" for her name lately... think I've been watching too many anime with similar sounding names, alot^^)

I also quite like Shitow Haruka from RahXephon. It's just... a great story of her and Ayato and she's a good character^^

Oh! And who could forget xxxHOLiC and Tsubasa's Yuuko?? She's so amusing!^^

Chichiri from Fushigi Yuugi's also a good one, no da!=^.^=

Haruka Naru's Yasuaki too... I don't know why, I just like his character (and design).

Assuming that Touka from Uta is over 20 too (sometime's it's just hard to tell...) I quite like her character too...

Think that's about it that I can think of at the moment...

You know, all of the cast of Honey and Clover are college age or middle-aged; you might give it a try sometime. Having said that, I think Morita from that series would be a close tie with Yamada for favorite.

Hajime Saitou from Rurouni Kenshin. He's like forty (which is ANCIENT in anime) and he still explodes heads and impales stuff. I just think he's totally cool.

Kyoko Otonashi from Maison Ikkoku. She's been through a lot of pain in her early life. However, she continues to be a caring individual with a lot of strength.

I'll go with:

1) Morita-- his personality is quirky and hilarious, but he's also has a very intense and serious side.

2) Hatori Sohma-- He's a doctor. He's soft spoken. And he has a tragic background. Need I say more?

3) Yamada-- Any woman who has magical unicorns to protect her chastity deserves mad props.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I'm surprised I haven't seen more mention of Kenshin Himura. He is about 28, you know.

Other than Kenshin, I like Nicholas D. Wolfwood from Trigun, as well as Maes Hughes and Alex Louis Armstrong from Fullmetal Alchemist.

She's probably older than that, but it's hard to tell.
And the information about Kenshin was from the results of a Rurouni Kenshin personality quiz I took.I got Kenshin so that's where I got the info' on his age as it was part of the character's stats. His real name btw is actually:Himura Shinta.
As far as it goes if you want to get really technical Washu,Sasami,Ryoko and
Ayeka are all well over 20.Sasami's actual age is around 709 well Washu is over
25,000 years old and Ryoko around 5,000.

Just as long as the character's age is relative to the average human lifespan, then it could work without being too technical. In anime it isn't impossible to have some mystical child character with triple digit ages. And of course there are those ageless vampire characters...

One of my favorites is Okina, from Rurouni Kenshin. He just made me laugh a whole lot. XD But, if I had to choose a bishi character too, then I'd have to say Aoshi, from the same series. Yep. XD

Hiko from Rurouni Kenshin for his cool arrogance. (come to think of it, that's why I like Hajime Saitoh as well)
Dr. Tenma from Monster for his willingness to sacrifice his career to try to right a wrong.
Maes Hughes from FMA because he's just so darned cute the way he dotes on his little girl.
Kyouraku Shunsui from Bleach because it takes a real man to be able to wear a pink cloak and a silly straw hat and still be able to flirt with a straight face.

Takuto, Meroko, and Izumi, from Full Moon wo Sagashite.

Well...I'm really not sure if Ta-kun is over 20. XD But Meroko and Izumi definitely are. XD

Anime exclusively, yes? Or are Manga characters allowed?

Samurai Champloo - Jin, Detective Manzou "The Saw," Sakonshougen Nagamitsu, Okuru, Bundai, Kagemaru, Kariya Kagetoki.
Read or Die OVA - Nancy Makuhari, Drake Anderson, Gennai Hiraga, Ikkyuu Soujun
FullMetal Alchemist - Izumi Curtis, Alex Louis Armstrong, Vato Falman, Maria Ross, Frank Archer (running joke), Tim Marcoh
Trigun - Vash the Stampede, Nicholas D. Wolfwood, Rai-Dei the Blade
The Slayers - Prince Philionel

Hmm. Most of my show must have an age gap quota to fill. Failed to mention Death Note and Monster because they're pretty much direct Manga-to-Animes, so...my fingers were tired.

Both anime and manga characters are allowed, unless there is a discrepancy of ages in one of them.

(in my case, Nobue happens to be 16 in the manga and 20 in the anime).

It's quite possible that Major Kusunagi on GITS:SAC is actually over 30.The cyber body that houses her ghost is that of a 25-30 year old woman, though we can't be sure wheter or not that is her real age.
Though it seems that in the episode that deals with her background that cybernization was still in it's infancy when she got her first cyberbody.Note how
rudimentary it appears compared to her later and more familiar cyberbody.
It's also clear in the episode that deals with Saito's past that she has actually had
a lot more military expierence.Again this leads me to conclude she might in fact be over 30 despite the fact she uses the cyberbody of someone 25-30.My guess as to her actually age is probably around 35 or maybe a few years older.

Alright then.

20th Century Boys - Because of the timeskips, I'm just going to round it off at "Everyone," except I don't think Kanna hits 20.
Monster - Kenzo Tenma, Wolfgang Grimmer
FullMetal Alchemist - Fuhrer King Bradley
Death Note - Soichiro Yagami
