Anime in America.

Hey guys, I'm having this burning question about anime.
My friend is an anime freak and she doesn't know.

Does anybody know any anime/manga series that take place specifically in the US?

The first thing that comes to mind is Sonic X. I can't remember if they specifically stated (in the original version) if it was America or not, but you can tell...

As for most others, usually they have scenes from America or a trip there for an ep or 2, but that's about it... Everything else (if not in Japan) takes place in either Europe or China (or space/another universe, but that's besides the point^^), unless there's a quick trip elsewhere.

Well, there's at least one. XD Kaleido Star is an anime about a Japanese girl who comes to live in America to join the Kaleido Stage, which is kind of like an acrobatics theatre. It's cute, I'd recommend it! :)

Paradigm City in The Big O is generally considered to be New York City, but that doesn't really count.

In the Sakura Wars OVAs, there were a couple of brief, but important flashback sequences that were set in New York.

Wow!!

There's this new anime called Red Garden, and it's placed entirely in New York. It seems like a dark anime though, but I will watch it, just to see how Japanese people view New Yorkers.

I totally forgot about Hurricane Touchdown! The Golden Digimentals movie... if you were to see the original version, the whole thing would be in America. Funny how English speakers (like in that one) still have Japanese accents^^ Course it's that way in many anime, but still funny^^

I thought it was especially hillarious that when Wallace was speaking in English, he had practically no accent, then he was on the phone and said, "Hi Mom, it's Warrace..." I laughed so hard at that part.

Just pointing out that I think you mean Chrono Crusade...Chrono Cross is a video game, in which the events take place in a world completely separate from our own. XD Just thought I'd point that out.

Well it doesn't take place in America I wonder if one of Madoka's parents in
Kimagure Orange Road might have been either American or from Western Europe or somewhere like that because if you watch KOR you can notice that she has
BLUE eyes and black hair, which I think would be unusual for Japanese.

Riding Bean is another such series and was done by the same guy that did Gunsmith Cats.

There's also Miami Guns which, theoretically takes place in Miami. I say theoretically since the topography of southern Florida does not, to the best of my recollection include either mountains or deserts (which somehow figure prominently in this series).
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

It would be unusual for Japanese person to have anything other than black hair and brown eyes. XD By that logic, any character with a hair color other than black and an eye color other than brown could be classified as European. XD

Doesn't Beck take place in America?

The opening lyrics are "I was made to live in America" with various footage of American-esque places. I would've kept watching, till i realized the fansub was in french.

Here are some characters of American origin in anime:
  • Duo Maxwell in Gundam Wing
  • Maimillion Pegasus in Yu-gi-oh
  • Edward Harrelson in Gundam SEED
  • George Glenn, also from Gundam SEED
  • Rebecca Hawkins, also from Yu-gi-oh
  • Joco, from Shaman King

Oh, and Beck only partially takes place in America, but Ryusuke is Japanese/American

I guess for some reason anime writers put their characters in Japan because their market audience is dominantly japanese. But with the nonillions of anime titles that are produced some just have to take place in America.

I'm going to have to check out Kaleido Star.
