Anime Fans & the Internet...

Postby Stiletto » Mon Dec 25, 2006 8:38 pm

Hello all! I guess I'll have to begin this CAA life here with a general anime-related question.

Do you guys agree that most, if not the majority of all anime fans are active users on the Internet? By "active", I mean people who might spend at least an hour or more a day online doing various anime-related things (on forums, imageboards, fanfic sites, anime stores, etc).

Personally I would think so, given that anime is still considered to be a relatively niche market. I know that the only contact I have with other fans in real life are at my college anime club, as well as the manga aisle at my local Borders. So lurking on various anime forums is one way for me to know other anime fans.

Anyways, I'd love to hear your own thoughts on this.

No. It's easy to forget because they're the most vocal and the most social, but the "serious" anime fans who frequent message boards and websites, go to cons, etc., such as ourselves, are a minority of the anime fanbase taken as a whole.

I also know some serious anime fans who don't really spend a lot of time on the internet. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I don't know how to answer that question. I think the majority are, but they don't necessarily congregate at the supposedly high-volume strongholds of the internet. For instance, I'm pretty sure that not every anime fan is aware of ****n, otherwise the meme-whoring, copypasta-ing, "OMG SHANA IS HOT"-ing and lolita fandom bordering on paedophilia would doubtless be massive wherever anime fandom was pronounced.

I guess the thrust of what I was asking for was if any of you thought there was a higher tendency for anime fans to go online for anime-related interaction, moreso than people with other hobbies besides anime\manga.

You do have a point regarding the various underground portions of the anime community and how some fans might not be aware of their existence. But I guess I was sort of leaning towards the general fandom, and not those in the extreme (fanboys, otaku, etc).

First of all, welcome to the forum! I hope you have a great time while you're here!

And I would say that your assumption about anime fans being active online users is a pretty safe assumption! After all, the web is a hotspot (so to speak :P) of information and reveiws about anime. So, yes, I think that most anime fans are active online.

Well I wouldn't say that they were more active than Sci Fi fans in general.I think
Trekkers might be a bit more active online, but that's just a guess.
