Well, I'm pretty much not a fanfiction person in general...I can never find one that meets my standards of grammatical correctness. XD Well, add to that the fact that I really don't want to waste time trudging through the shounen/shoujo-ai and yaoi fics, and you've got my two main reasons for why I never read any. XD

I personally can't stand fanfiction. I don't like anything that deviates from the storyline, as fanfics usually do. That's just my opinion though; if you like it, more power to you.

I also agree with Corrie on the grammatical aspect.

Those Lacking Spines is the only one I deem worthy of reading. Everything else just seemed horrendous (though there may be a few exceptions).

Myoti, I actually am offended by that considering I have made numerous Fanfiction.

HOWEVER, the only good ones I have ever made are comedies and/or parodies.

I still remember my Best Comedy Award for "The Cid Highwind Show". That was a series I could read out loud and crack up.

I also avoid fanfiction, almost like the plague, because I do not want to run into yaoi or any other perversion. Perhaps, though, I'll be able to find a good site that bans it or some other block.

We actually have a thread on here that suggests fanfiction. It's not entirely active, but you're welcome to post your suggestions there. =] *points down in sig*

Personally... I have kinda high standards for fanfiction until I get sucked in. Sometimes I read enormous stories and then wonder why I just wasted my life, but once in a blue moon I come across something great. So, I don't think you can entirely rule out fanfiction as a source of good literary entertainment. On the other hand there is a LOT of crap. It's just a matter of whether or not you want to wade through it.

The fanfiction I read the most is HP because there's so much of it and ALOT to choose from. Another high point of HP fanfiction is that some of the authors are NOT romance driven teenagers, but are instead very good authors with a grasp on literary things. I can only read it if I'm in the mood though. In anime fanfictions I usually like one shots better. They tend to be better written instead of long and drawn out without purpose.

I love fanfiction, if it's the right genre and series. I usually only read really funny parody fanfics and romance fanfics for pairings that I like.

I've written some fanfiction too.

I like Fanfiction, but don't read it as often anymore due to the fact that it seems the number of good writers grows fewer all the time. I do enjoy writing it though.

I enjoy the occassional fanfiction, as long as it's reasonably brief (I don't have the attention span for epics) and only in a few fandoms. As in, the ones that aren't infested with stupid people who write nothing but Mary Sues. >_>

Fanfiction is probably something I interact/read occasionally and I only tend to read stuff that relates to a series I've watched and enjoyed. As long as you know and understand that the authors tend to spin the story based on their own perspective of the series, then fanfiction is worthy reading material.

I generally avoid fanfiction. I have more productive things to do with my time. Like...play video games. Yeah. >_>

Seriously though, my point of view is...the good fanfics probably aren't good enough to justify sifting through all the tripe. So I don't bother.

This coming from a person who doesn't write them.

Perhaps that remark would work in a thread full of people who DON'T write fanfiction.

Your basically telling people to shy away from my work.

o_o; Tom, don't take the posts in this thread so personally. No one's telling anyone else to do anything, they're simply stating their opinions.

I don't like fanfiction mainly because it's un-canonical.

I'm not really offended. It just saddens me that people are suggesting others not to read any when a mass majority are bad, but then again a lot are good.

Me? All comedies aside, I don't really like fanfiction either but not because it's poorly written, more because it's altering someone else's work.

didn't expect this much replies.

I too have writen some fanfics. the one i tried to submit to fanfiction was rejected cause it strayed from the plot. so there is a good cite for keeping to the plot.

Fanfiction is uncanonical, but that's the thing I like most about it. It's more of a "what if" exploring various possibilities and routes that would not likely ever occur in the actual source.

Of course, good fanfiction should read like like it actually fits with the source, and since these are unfortunately rare, finding the good fanfiction is like poking around for needles in a haystack.

Which is but another reason I liked Those Lacking Spines so much. It was pretty much a satire (so it doesn't exactly have to "fit") that basically mocked everything that was wrong with the fanfiction fandom (in an accurately true portrayal).

I'm not saying ALL fanfiction is bad, but... well, most of what everyone else said covers my feelings on it.

It depends on how well it is written.
I generally like to write crossovers because I enjoy trying to put characters from different shows together to see how they would interact.

An example of a really good crossover(and one I wish I could have written myself, but too bad didn't)is the Fourth Doctor/Star Trek:The Doctor And The
Enterpise crossover.

it seems that when it comes down to it. it depends not only on personal preferance but where you find it and the content of the fanfiction. I noticed that most people on here say they either don't like or Hate fanfiction except for a specific fic. I propose that someone (would if i could but i aint got the money) should create a new fanfiction site using all the ideas we here have discussed.

Actually, that's the one place I used to look for fanfics. XD Unfortunately, the majority of fics I found had awful spelling and sentence composition, and could barely pass as 2nd grade reading material. xD; Not to mention most of them use "internet speak" for dialogue, which is inexcusable for a grammar freak such as myself. XD

And for those of you who write fanfiction...This isn't a personal attack on you, this is a sharing of opinions. Some people like it, others don't, and just because certain people say they don't like fanfiction doesn't mean that it's going to draw people that do like it away from reading it. So yeah, don't take it so personally. o_o

Yep, my .02$. XD

Actually since what we are talking about is fictional retelling of series that are entirely fictional to begin with wheter or not it is cannonical doesn't matter. What does matter is having fun with them.
