Now that nobody whos read this can disagree, why do all the possably good happy endings get messed up? (I mean the ones that end happily but are just bad, not ones where it could end happily then suddenly doesn't)

There are all kinds of anime endings. Anime that look like they're going to end happily and do, anime that look like they're going to end happily then don't, ("Goal!", anyone?), anime that look like they're going to end unhappily then do, and anime that look like they're going to end unhappily, then don't.

An anime ending getting messed up is all in the execution of it, and it's relevance to it's characters. This is why, despite a show like Kashimashi being a happy ending, I thought it wasn't very good.

I don't have an order as which one is the best, but here are mine.

Escaflowne. I know that some people don't agree with the ending, but I felt that it fit how the story should end.

Gundam 0080

Gundam 08th MS team

Gundam Wing ending and Gundam Wing Endless Waltz: the movie ver had a nice ending.

Cowboy Bebop

Tenchi Universe

Macross Zero

Neon Genesis Evangelion's original ending (Not the movies, those are great on their own!)

His and Her Circumstances (It's quite hidden, but there IS an ending!)

Outlaw Star (Even though Gene's haircut at the end was a dissapointment!)

Midori Days (Really cute and nicely wrapped up!)

Metropolis (I love the small cliffhanger at the end!)

Sometimes the endings are like they ran out of time or funding so they just wrapped it up and because of that it completly sucks or they just dont end like Birdie the mighty

More the latter--quite a few anime series run out of money, so they try to wrap everything up in the quickest (and cheapest) method possible.

See: Evangelion and His and Her Circumstances for prime examples! (Coincidence that both of these were directed by Hideki Anno??)

Well, also, many anime only play the first story arc or so of the manga that inspired them. Some anime even finish production before said manga does. All that makes it hard to wrap up some anime neatly.

That said, I'm usually OK with anime endings. A few very good endings and a few very bad ones stick out. Surprisingly enough, a couple of my choices for bad endings have already been mentioned here. An accounting for taste, I guess.

What I look for in an ending is one that is appropriate to the rest of the series - although a completely hopeless ending to a complete downer of an anime doesn't exactly qualify for me. I do like a glimmer of hope to shine through. Now that I’ve confused and muddled the thread topic in my usually way, I’ll get on with the list with some series I though had good, appropriate endings.

Cowboy Bebop

Azumanga Daioh – I know why it made you cry, Tenshi. It was an ending to a great series full of wonderful characters portraying a time in their lives which must end even though we wish it wouldn’t.

Trigun

Spirited Away

Voices of a Distant Star

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

DNAngel

Nanaka 6/17
