ok, so, today I took my Wii into the living room and had my whole family play Wii sports with one another.
It's great seeing everyone share the same interests with me! It really is!
Wii was a great idea on Nintendo's part.
but now, I want to take it a bit further and find anime with my whole family as well.

what are some good anime that a whole family can watch together?

I'd recommend InuYasha. It has alot of things that the whole family could enjoy, such as comedy, romance, and lots of action. I highly recommend it as a family show, even if it is on [adult swim].

Azumanga's good, but I'm not sure if it's something for the entire family, 9-year olds included. There's some language, the creepy teacher, the weird Kaorin-thing, and the "size" jokes, too. I'd wait a bit on that for a family watch.

I don't think I'd recommend Fruits Basket with a 9 year old in the family, given a lot of the material in it. Remember the whole part where Ayame was trying to defend those people who went to the red light district? Yeah...I can't recommend Fruits Basket at all.

I totally reccomend Howl's Moving Castle. It's my absolute favorite Miyazaki film, and even my little sister (Who only likes Naruto) loved it. So, yeah, I'd start with a Miyazaki film. Then if they liked that, start with a series of anime.

Miyazaki films. They'er so CUTE! But Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away are the best ones. I honestly don't know what else, since it's unclear as to what each person in your family likes. If there is no swearing allowed in a movie you family is watching. Ect... So I say Miyazaki Films.

Prince of tennis would also be a good one. Very interesting and they take time to explain parts that anyone who doesn't play tennis so they can understand what a character is talking about.

Azumanga Daioh,a hilarious slice of life comedy about the misadventures of a group of high school girls and their teachers.
Love Hina,another comedy,this time about a guy who goes to Tokyo to take the college entrance exams and keeps failing them but ends up the manager of some
apartments owned by his grandparents that happen to be turned into an all girls
dorm.
Maison Ikkoku,more of a romantic slice of life comedy about the residence of a
Tokyo boarding house.Based on the manga by Rumiko Takahashi the creator of
Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2.
Crest of the Stars/Banner of the Stars,the first two parts of the Seikai Saga.Anyone who loves Sci Fi and especially space opera needs to see it.
Dual!Parallel Trouble Adventure,a fun parody of Neon Genesis Evangelion without
any of the angst.My avvie highly recommends this one.
Case Closed(aka Detective Conan),a really fun fantasy/mystery series.
Cardcaptor Sakura,fun magic girl series starring one of the most reluctant superheroines you'll ever meet.
Inuyasha,but only certain episodes since some of them can get to be rather violent.
Also there is the whole problem with having to go and explain the difference between demons in Inuyasha and demons in Christianity.So you might want to wait on it awhile.

Spirited Away [It's a good movie, didn't love it personally but that’s just me]
Totoro [A really sweet and magical story. Deals with religious/mythical things]
Castle in the Sky [the way it mentioned the Bible I found quite unnecessary and offensive but it is still a nice adventure story]
Howl's Moving Castle [I really liked it, it was a simple dreamy fairy tale, I wasn't really expecting more than that]
