Recommend Good Non-Mainstream Anime

The real heart of CAA; discuss specific series, issues, and things related to anime here.

I THINK that, in the context of this thread, it's "what's on TV" vs. "what's not on TV". At least, that's how I see it. Anime is pretty far from the mainstream all by itself, so I usually consider the televised anime to be mainstream (not that that's a bad thing or whatever).

Unless that question was directed to Mitsuki Lover, in which case my post should be ignored. XD

I'd say Millennium Actress. Excellent movie!

Mainstream anime = Popular anime or is widely liked. You see alot of people talking about that anime or cosplaying from that anime.

List of anime that would be called mainstream.

Gundam

Macross

Tenchi

Furi Kuri

Fullmetal Alchemist

Ghost in the Shell

Naruto

Inu Yasha

non-mainstream anime = Anime that is not really popular or anime that is not widely like. Doesn't have a big fan base and not talk about alot.

List of anime that would be called non-mainstream.

Witch Hunter Robin

Chance! Pop Sessions

Nadia - Secret of Blue Water

Fancy Lala

Fafner

(The) Twelve Kingdoms

*flails* Someone else knows about this other than Myrrlynn?

I finished the series, but I'm not sure about watching the OAVs.

Though this is more toward girls than guys, really. XD *convulses over the bishies*

Well, it is dramaish is covered with pretty-boys, but I can probably see guys enjoying this too.

Yeah... I've been trying to advertise this show once I got started on it, and following through with the subs (just finished ep 22 yesterday). Only one OVA out and then I guess sometime the movie will be released too. But yeah I was wondering if anyone else has even HEARD about this nice little show^^ I'll be surprised with just saying something like "bishies-a plenty" and watching all the fan-girls try to start watching the show^^

Azumanga Daioh is amazing, and still not very well-known, as far as I can tell.

If you like manga, I would also recommend Clover. It's out of print, but you can still find it online.

You guys are mentioning stuff that seems fairly well-known to me. XD

Well, I've been waiting for a thread like this for a while. This is my chance to plug something I guarantee 95% of you have never even heard of. It's called Hajime no Ippo ("The First Step", or "Ippo's Beginning"). It's a show about boxing and it is absolutely amazing. If you like stuff like Naruto, One Piece, or DBZ, you should really give Hajime no Ippo a try.

Well, I'm not sure about here on the CAA, but Hajime no Ippo seems pretty popular on several other forums. It's American release title is Fighting Spirit, for those looking to buy it. :thumb:

I've only heard of it. I read Newtype rather often lately, and I do a lot of random internet searching.

The Cat Returns is an adorable and fairly obscure Studio Ghibli movie. I loved it.

I've read about Devil Lady.Isn't that the one with the model who is turned into some type of Devil Creature? It sounded a bit odd really when I read up on it.

Yep,Vampire Princess Miyu is something that I would be interested in getting.

yea devil lady is that one and it wasnt exactly well ploted there are a lot of jumps in story line and then near the end it gets to a really non chritian like theme something like she interuptes a second coming yet the person was a real jerk that was being interupted so ya dont watch it Devil Lady.

Well I hope to get the Rightstuf print catalogue sooner or later and then I will see what they got under DVD.If it doesn't come by the first of the year I will see if I can go back and order from Animenation again, but the sole reason I haven't been doing that has been problems with getting on to the check out.

I noticed that it says it was better than even The Incredibles on the cover.
Any way now that I have it I crossed it off my list.

Saw Appleseed yesterday and was blown away by it.It's by the creator of GITS and the director of Bubblegum Crisis. The only criticism I have is that sometimes the lip synch in the dub seemed to be off a bit.Other than that it was really an astounding movie.
Favorite scenes include the one toward the end when Deunan makes a Major Kusunagi style leap and when they're at the lab and she activates the memory
disc that Athena had given her.

BTW, mitsuki lover, the manga version is still unfinished. Shirow says he'll get around to it, but Takahashi said the same thing about Inuyasha...

From what I understand Rumiko Takahashi said that she planned on about 500 chapters for the Inuyasha manga.
