Has anyone seen full metal alchemist? What type of themes and plot does it have and is there any objectionable content. As in any nudity, sexual content, language, and/or blood and gore.

I've read four volumes of the manga, which should provide at least a vague idea until other individuals may provide a more extensive review.

The plot, and subplots, generally seem to be decent. I won't get into the overall plot, but I will say that so far it looks to be a relatively simple case of bad guys aiming for world domination, combined with the protagonist's quests. Basically, the main character (Elric) and his brother tried to bring their mother back to life via alchemy, which failed and cost Elric an arm and a leg (literally) and his brother his entire body. Fortunately, Elric could get automail replacements for his limbs, and his brother's soul was placed in a suit of armor.

Now they need to find a Philosopher's Stone, which enhances an alchemist's power enough to let them perhaps restore their bodies. Conveniently, the bad guys (who seem to be immortal, in that death only slows them down for a little while) also are trying to get Philsopher's Stones.

The characters are overall excellant. I don't want to get into spoilers, otherwise I would describe more of this.

As for objectionable content... basically none. If there was any cursing it passed beneath my notice. There is moderate amounts of fighting, which at times involves blood. One character can explode people if he gets a hand on them, which isn't pretty but the manga-ka could have made it far worse.

Well, one thing that has bothered people about the manga is that Edward makes it pretty clear that he doesn't believe in God. But really there isn't much objectable religous material compared to most animes and mangas I've seen/read. ^_^

I can remember, in the copies I've read, the "F" word in a few instances, especially whenever Edward is REALLY angry.

Then there's the times when Edward or Alphonse say things like "God hates us, he'd send us back."

But I've seen worse. At one point Edward makes it clear that men are not God. The manga has an interesting spiritual side, though.

...I have made a vast oversight by forgetting the fact that religiously, the manga is a screwy as a drill (I apologize for that). In the first issue, Elric takes an extremely anti-religious stance, so all his comments regarding God should be taken in a non-literal sense.

Other than that, there's no twisted philosophy, which is generally for more dangerous than what is explicitly anti-religious.

i can help you here

nudity, sexual content - Your in luck! Almost none! With the exception of about 2 moments in the entire anime
Where Ed is chasing a criminal, and tackles the criminal, and accidentally grabs her breast. Then he jumps away becasue he didn't realize it was a girl
also, another slight one
lt. riza is in bed, and says "stop, that tickles", then she wakes up, opens her covers, and a dog is licking her foot
none of those short skirts, or any other stuff

blood/gore: There is a lot of blood in this anime, including one person "exploding" other people,. including their heads and such. Yeah, really bloody. On the subject of Gore, sort of, if you count that weird combination Ed and Al made when trying to revive their mother.

Language: Not sure, ive only seen the fansubbed episodes, and fansubbers tend to "spicen" the language, but they don't say many bad things.

the plot is about 2 brothers, who look for the philosopers stone to get their old bodies back, and later they know the truth about doing stuff they should not do. It's incredibly great, and it touches the heart many times. I think you will love it if you gave it a chance

none of those short skirts, or any other stuff
One of Roy's goals is to make it so all the girls in the military have to wear miniskirts.
...:3

And Winry's outfits are a little borderline, but not that bad.

If I recall correctly, that was only in the doushinji at the end of the volume. Created by the manga-ka, yes, but I would be inclined to not take it very seriously. Especially how Roy truly relates to women.

It was in the anime, in definate of that. Episode 13, approx 13 minutes withing the episode. Because Roy goes like "If i become fuhrer, ALL FEMALE PERSONEL... WILL WEAR MINI-SKIRTS!"

at that moment, Lt. Havoc gets a nosebleed, and goes up to Roy's leg and starts to hug it, saying "Im going to follow you all the way" and yadda yadda and Hawkeye has just some blank stare.

Ah; well, I cannot vouch for the anime. Thank you for clarifying.

Good anime, I've watched up to episode 38 so far. As far as spiritual issues what I find to be interesting is that Ed and Al talk alot about how it's wrong for people to try to make humans on thier own because that is the territory of God. I find this attitudse refreshing considering the current debates over human cloning.

Hmm I finished the series (episode 51) a month or two ago, and it isn't really that bad at all (in fact, one of my favorite series of all time)...probably biggest issue people would have (with the anime anyway, I never read the manga) would be the blood, which can be slightly excessive at times. There isn't really anything like fan service promoting immoral sexuality and such; but there are 7 villains named after the "seven deadly sins" (lust, greed, gluttony, envy, wrath, sloth, pride). But overall, it's hardly anything terrible.

I wouldn't worry about that episode. Its a very light hearted filler episode. I like the ghost story from the second half of the episode.

AS is as far as ep. #9 I believe(or #8 forget which).I nodded off and so missed the first part of the ep.but did see the second part.It had something to do with Winry being kidnapped and Ed getting his artificial arm taken
off by a sadistic butcher. There was a lot more blood in this ep.than the last
one and Ed nearly kills the eps. villian but Al stops him in time.In the end
Ed gets his title of Full Metal Alchemist.
Fortunatley AS reruns both GITS:SAC and FMA on Thrusdays so I plan on
watching the entire ep. then.
As far as the female military in mini-skirts,YOWSERS! :thumb:
I wanna see Hawkeye in a mini-skirt!

btw:Considering Ed's and Al's background it's easy to see why Ed in the
manga would say he doesn't believe in God.

Haha...yes, most of it is just light hearted humor; stuff like that isn't emphasized and promoted throughout the entire series..although I do find it pretty amusing.
The butcher (Larry the Chopper) episode was pretty twisted, but he's one of the many villains that appear in the series.

just an FYI- I wouldn't think this a spoiler- The early episodes are VERY important- no matter how pointless of a flashback it seems to be now- virtually every character you meet in the earlyl episodes/flashbacks will play a significant role in the series at a later time. (personally I think that's a plus- there are very little discarded or "once-and-over" characters in this series)
