I can't believe that out of all companies, 4Kids has to bring One Piece here to America. They are going to ruin it. Well, it might be okay but it probably will not resemble anything of what it is supposed to be.

Yeah I mentioned this in some other thread, and gave a link, but now I can't find it... It does stink because 4Kids will probably make it totally goofy (ok, so its pretty goofy to begin with) but they'll probably make it look childish.

Yeah. It stinks, bu it's the sad truth. I just hope they don't change ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE'S NAMES! It makes me sad when they do that.

I rarely watch the originals of anything, so I don't ever know how much they change.
I've never even heard of "One Piece".

No, they intend to keep Luffy's name intact, that much I know. You should check out AnimeSuki, I believe they have a link to 4Kids' statement. And I also think FUNi does a good job with most of their anime. I thought Yu Yu Hakusho was good, at any rate.

Really...
I saw a little thing on the licensing of it. Luffy and Shanks are safe, but they'll probably change everyone else's names. Sigh. Goodbye Zoro, hello John Smith. Good Nami, hello Jane Brown. Goodbye Usopp, hello Sam Green. Goodbye Buggy, hello Bubbles. Goodbye Kuro, hello Bob. Arg! When will 4Kids' reign of terror end! Maybe they'll release the unedited version on DVD later on. I HOPE THEY DO, OR THEY'LL HAVE MORE ANGRY EMAILS THAN YOU CAN HANDLE, 4KIDS! YA HEAR ME?

Funny, I distinctly remember having this rant session before. When I find the link, I'll come back and post it. Edit: oh here it is--http://www.christiananime.com/showthread.php?t=7949
As far as licensing companies like 4kids and FUNi, I think it was Mave who brought up that these companies get better with each project they do. I think lots of people, as she mentioned, hate FUNi because of dragon ball z. Well, back in the day, anime was just coming over here and they weren't really experienced at dubbing and all. But now, I think they've gotten much better about it because of experience and the fact they know americans will buy anime.

Ashley is correct.
While I also tend to be annoyed by many of the edits and often unnecessary changes that 4kids makes, a few things have happened recently that could possibly be small steps in the right direction...
1. 4kids is evidently letting Funimation release uncut dub/sub DVDs of Yugioh and Shaman King, although the dubs will still use the 4kids names. It shall prove interesting to see how this works out...
2. In a recent 4kids press release, Tokyo Mew Mew was called Tokyo Mew Mew. "Hollywood" wasn't mentioned anywhere in it...
In any case, now that One Piece has been licensed, Naruto is almost certainly not that far behind.

*sigh* Yet another fine anime... Well, there's another dub boycott for me. I generally just watch the subs anyways. If anyone hears anything more about the name changes, I'd like to know.

Figures. I'm not that worried, though. One Piece was never extremely serious, and we can assume that 4Kids is not trying to ruin anime. I think they'll do a decent job. It's a stretched anime anyway.
But you can probably bet Zoro's surname is going to vanish. Most of the names are good, though, and simple for American audiances, unlike, for example, Yu Gi Oh.

I had been thinking Funimation would get the license for this but we probably should've seen this coming considering Funimation recently acquired three lengthy series.
I am uneasy considering 4kids' track record but, currently, I'm hoping that 4kids will let Funimation release an unedited version of the show like they only recently announced for Yugioh and Shaman King.

*tisk* The english dubs are going to be like:
"Lets go find the treasure!!" - in a corny way
*Luffy drinks beer* "..all this coke is making me gassy" - >___<x !!

Don't forget the "ARRR Matey" every four sentences!

Though One Piece actually does feature a fair number of piratisms. There weren't that many "arrs" but they did exist on occasion, generally with flunky pirates. And when Cabajhi said "You scurvy dog!" my sister and I found it hilarious and kept bringing it up for weeks.
