I have not watched it, though I really want to. Chrno is a demon who helps a nun, Rosette, with exorcisms and the like, correct? I certainly wouldn't consider it a Chrstian anime, even if there are some Christian themes. You should just go where the Sprit convicts you--different people will be convicted differently regarding different series. It's an individual thing between you and God with the Spirit. But I would be interested in knowing more about what you think of the series in general (plot, characters, animation), without giving away any spoilers.

I already wrote something about Chrno Crusade in the review requests thread. And since I'm lazy I'm just going to copy and paste. I don't think it has any spoilers in it.

This is definately NOT the cleanest show I have ever seen. Demons explode, splatter and do other gross stuff when shot with Rosette's gun. And the resident scientist/inventor of the covent is quite the pervert. He loves to crawl under benches to try to see under the girls dresses (they are all wearing bloomers so it doesn't really matter) and he makes sexual remarks to them from time to time but usually right after that the girls pound him into the ground. Suprisingly there isn't a lot of bad language.

Now for the religious side. When it comes to religion this series is a pile of poop. You thought Kaitou Jeanne was bad? That is nothing compared to this! As far as I could tell there was no real "hell" just a place where the demons lived and were ruled by their "queen." And even though the demons stick their noses all over the place God and angels are absent. Instead there are the "apostles" who were given "special talents by God." The only thing is they were given these talents/powers from birth so they can choose to join the side of the demons. The apostles are able to directly access the astral lines which is where they and the demons draw their power from. It's sort of like the Force from Star Wars since the supposedly all life comes from the astral lines and then returns when that life dies.

Most of the episodes I saw were Rosette and her partner(s) going out to fight demons. She shoots them with bullets with holy water in them and apparently that kills/gets rid of the lesser demons. For bigger ones she uses a special bullet that doesn't have holy water in it but I can't remember why it works. And yes Rosette's partner is a demon. A "good demon" supposedly, although he hasn't exactly repented. He's just helping Rosette out partly for his own revenge against some demons he was allies with before.

So after thinking about it they got two things right religiously:
1.) God's power is absolute
2.) Demons have a class system. (there are lower class demons and higher class demons)

Am I saying don't try to see it? Not at all, it's an entertaining series, and actually my sister totally loves it and wants to buy it as soon as it comes out. However, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who is at all shaky about their faith since this series definately twists Christianity. They may change that a little for the dub version though.

Lastly if you want more info about the show check out this site:
http://www.chrno-crusade.com/
it has more info then you would ever care to know including character bios.

Wow that was longer then I remembered. I'll just end it by saying I don't think you should recommend this to any of your friends who are shaky in their faith, or who are maybe just getting interested in Christianity. It's twisted view of Christianity might mess them up.

You have to remember most Japanese people don't really understand the Christian faith. They see what the media puts out and the general stereotye of Christianity.

In my opinion, you should make sure you're immersed in the Bible and know God's truths so you'll be able to tell when something is false. Since anime is entertainment I think its ok as long it doesn't take a place in front of God. Chrno Crusade's a good series and they have a few things kinda right, alot of things a little off kilter (how the heck do you spell that???) and some that are totally blown-out-of-the-water incorrect. Check things you're not sure about in the Bible and I think you'll be okay. ^_^ my lil input. If anything I said is wrong, please correct me.

Oh and in the meantime we should also pray for the lost Japanese people

Edit: oh and btw MyrrhLynn, I wasn't trying to controdict you in any way ^_^ never saw your post... thanks for giving more info on the series itself

thanks for the replys guys, (and girls)
imo there is alot more to this series then just going out and killing demons with guns, though i do see some conflicts with christianity, and i really cant go into it since most of what i am talking about happens in the last half of the series and are major spoilers

Lol, I never take stuff on the internet personally. And actually you are right I think someone who is willing to challenge what Chrno Crusade presents is perfectly fine watching it. It's actually rather an interesting show. But it's not any more realistic then most of the animes out there. ;)

Chrno Crusade was actually one of my favorite shows for awhile. It doesn't get REALLY controversial (is that the right word??) until later in the series. It seems more based on Catholic views than Protestant ones so if it was controversial to Catholic stuff earlier on, I didn't notice. Since its anime, I don't really take it to heart.

Lol, I never take stuff on the internet personally.

I usually don't either. Someone could cuss me out online (its happened) and I could care less. I'm usually more worried about whether or not someone else will take offense. I hate arguing and making people mad at me >.<

Chrno? or Chrono?

I have seen a couple eps of the anime and have come to the conclusion that I must reconcile it to myself that they (The japanese) will never get the details of Catholicism (Christiantity too.) right.

I'm a Catholic so any anime portraying demons/angels as anything capable of walking and talking normally is flawed. Angels and Demons, can do this of course, but any real demon would hate your guts and any angel would only be there to fulfill God's mission. Plus angels tend to be portrayed as bubbleheads, and demons tend to be able to do good. Very odd, ne?

As to not taking it to heart (sorry if it sounds like I'm atk'ing anyone). I take my entertainment seriously in hindsight. Which is to say I enjoy the watching of it and reading etc. but afterwards I run it through the mill. In the end though I analyze it because I like to. :) Weird, ne?

Conclusion, I like Chrno Crusade for its entertainment value, but do not look to it as my guiding light of Truth.
Azumaria and Chrno Rock!

Yes...I too am a Catholic...and the things they have in the series are more directed in Catholic views than Protestant, yet it's all still twisted and they use a lot of "artistic license" to fit their needs with things like the Stigmata and everything. Entertainment wise, I think it's great and I really like the animation. It's very clean and cute to look at. Quite detailed as well.

As long as we remember that it's all fiction and look on it as just entertainment I think it's fine. It's an interesting series and I think fairly original, in a sense. I enjoy it thoroughly.

When I found this thread I just had to comment because I personally love Chrno Crusade and because I wanted to bring a few things up, as I immersed myself in the plot...

As far as religion goes, the first half of the show is all right, aside from a few bouts with the character Aion and his Anti-Christ talk, he doesn't do much until the very end. Aside from that, on the religion side there's not much wrong with the show...but, keep in mind this is

1) Insane anti-christ guy

2) A nun with a a gun

There are a lot of religious conflicts, but they're not flaunted or anything and not really discussed much until the end.

Beyond religion, there's not much else in the series that can be considered bad. There is nudity, more so in the manga, but its not much. There is also the matter of the Elder being a pervert, but all the girls where bloomers...but they're nuns, so it just rubs me the wrong way. I don't think I've missed anything else.

I myself enjoy this show quite a bit, as I am not a Christian and I really am just learning about your religion, thats why I'm here =3. But Chrno is a great anime with an awesome soundtack, and almost everyone that I've shown it to loves it.

I liked the opening and closing soundtracks a lot. Whilst it may get some theology wrong, it also gets some right.

A serious systematic review of it episode by episode is something of an ambitious task .. one I will not attempt anytime soon. :)

Even though this anime is about a demon helping a nun, I like to think of it more as a story of conversion for the demon, Chrono. He is badmouthed by many of the nuns and priests of the Order and it's made clear that demons are NOT a good thing. However, Chrono's a special case. He wants to stop the bad guy, he wants to save the day. He is a converted demon. As ridiculous as that sounds, this does follow God's teachings about how if someone wants to be in his company, they can, no matter how much sin they have. Though it's never found out if Chrono did fully reform.

I also like the idea of demons being able to use God's powers. After all, Lucifer himself was once one of God's most trusted angels, so it only makes sense that there would be some grey areas in how the powers of God could be used. I mean, look at Aion. He's the pure embodiement of the Antichrist. Convincing people he speaks in the name of the Lord and pitting them against one another.

Despite the many minor religious mistakes, Chrno Crusade does a far better job than most at sticking to the teachings of the Lord.
