CAA: Christian Anime Alliance

I just brought 3 anime DVDs in the course of two days, using almost every last cent I had on me thats not in my bank account, most of my spending money(like 99% of it) goes towards either anime or games, I have soundtracks from some of the games and anime that I love, I have 40+ anime DVDs(yes all are legit) a libary of classic RPGs and other games... and I can't get enough....

*sigh* i wish i had some anime dvds. even my vcr is lonely... *Cries*

does extreem wnat of anime dvds make one an otaku?

I hear ya' I spend so much on anime I'm ALWAYS broke (good thing I still live at home!) BTW, as i understand it, in Japan Otaku is a derogatory term... just fyi (I'm still an Otaku, even if they think of it as derogatory, but then I'm also a self-professed geek and nerd, too)

Now that I'm supporting myself, I suppose I have to be a little more prudent than the "under-parent-support" years. hehe I think my moderation habits in manga shopping disqualifies me from otaku status.

1) Get friends who share the same interest and trade stuff. I enjoy my buddy's Detective Conan and Kungfu Boy while he reads my Blade of Immortal.
2) I try to kill sudden shopping impulses by holding it back for a week. I come back and see whether I really want it anymore.
3) I avoid the comic shop when I know I shouldn't spend any money on my hobby at a specific time period. 'Nuff said. Don't go where the temptation is. haha
4) Buy second hand stuff. Go JPQueen.
5) Sell my old stuff

A 1-day shopping spree on manga and artbooks could cost from $50 to $100. But I only allow that once every 2-3 months if the circumstances allowed it.

I have two confessions:
1) I don't buy anime. *everyone gasps*
2) The last time I watched anime was September 2003.

Conclusion: Mave is not an otaku.

Yeah, I remember the mild shock I got when I crossed the line, Vyse. At first, I would be thrilled to have some tapes with Toonami blocks in them. I would think "Wow! I have hours and hours worth of art reference!" At the time, that was all I was interested in. Then I bought a manga for more art reference. "Wow, these are expensive! I think I'll get my money's worth from this one, though. it's not like I'll buy any more."

Ah, the innocence of taking the first financial steps of becoming an otaku. Now I'm pretty hopeless. I even have a seperate anime section in my budget. Sad, huh? However, most people have hobbies that they're willing to dump large amounts of cash into, so I don't feel so bad. But watch out, Vyse - it all goes downhill from here.

Judging by the number of DVD's you have-- I'd say you crossed over a while ago.

I prefer to be called an "anime enthusiast.":P *HEHE* Otaku does have a negative connotation. I passed that mark a loooooong time ago. When I think Otaku, or for me - and anime enthusiast - *wink wink* - I think of someone who has seen at least hundreds of DVDs and owns hundreds, read hundreds of mangas, watched fan subs, reads online manga, collects anime collectibles, filling shelf after shelf with these collectibles, listens to J-pop and J-rock. Can understand some basic Japanese and wears shirts which say NGE and "Crack is cheaper than anime", then you've passed the Otaku, erm... I mean, anime enthusiast level.

However, I'm not an otaku, just an "anime enthusiast." ----- right?:grin:

My husband has this radio control hobby and I have anime. I agree with Gypsy, that if you set aside the money you will spend for anime or manga each month and budget, then it won't go out of control. I also like Mave's idea, of which I do, and that is don't ever impulse buy or go places where you might be tempted.

Also, time with the Lord should definitely take precedence over time with anime. Then, its a nice healthy hobby.

LOL True, I have considered taking Jappense, if anything for the purpose of importing from Japan, but yes "anime enthusiast" does have a nicer ring to it ^_^

And yes, the Lord should take precedence ^_^

But seriously, manga and artbooks sap up my time and money. Add anime to that list and I'm as good as dead and penniless. heh The only way I can indulge in anime is me giving up some manga. Which probably won't happen for a while.

well vyse... if you go on e-bay, you can buy some FX anime... it's good stuff! the whole series on 3 DVDs, and about 20 bucks!! i'm sure you could get a lot more anime in your collection if you did that!!! you could also download your anime off kazaa or something, that way you could get free anime!

oh, and before you kill me... i'm j/k

I passed the Otaku mark long ago. I like bought...4 anime dvds plus 4 mangaw all on one day.
