The next step for anime in the US?

With the smashing success of such films as Spiderman, Superman, Hulk and many other comic books turned movies, I have been thinking-- isn't only a matter of time until some American movie house adapts an anime or manga to the screen. I've read a few press releases concerning a liveaction version of Neon Genesis Evangelion is in the works (WETA, famous for doing the special effects in the Lord of the Rings, is going to do special effects for it, or so they say) Has anybody else thought of this or heard anything related to anime or mangas being adapted to the screen outside of Japan?

No, but that sounds awesome! I've been hoping they would do that for a long time. I just hope they doesn't screw it up... >.>

I read that one studio bought the rights to a Dragonball Z movie. Now THAT would be funny. (imagines a live-action Buu ...!)

Ah, here it is, an old Anime Insider issue: "In this age of the anime boom, a live action Yu-Gi-Oh! film is becoming more and more possible. North American, live action versions of smashes Dragonball Z and Lupin the 3rd are already in the planning stages."

Heh, cool. It'd be like cosplaying in its highest form...

more on the NGE, I've ehard they are amaercanizing the names. I've heard that Asuka's name is now named Kate Ross :eyebrow: . Plus instead of 14, they will be like 20 something.

I'd like to see a Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal movie and also possibly a Trigun movie, that would be cool :thumb:

Yeah, a live action Trigun would be pretty cool!

About the live action Witch Hunter Robin, the IGN Insider says:

April 07, 2004 - The Sci Fi Channel has announced several of their new shows for 2004 and 2005 season, and among them is a live action version of the anime series Witch Hunter Robin.

The live action series was first rumored back in January and reported on several anime sites. True to the rumors, Roy Lee and Doug Davison - who did the American remake of the Japanese horror film Ringu -- will executive produce the TV series.

Also on board, as was rumored, is Joe Menosky, writer and producer for several Star Trek series, as a writer and executive producer of the series. The network said who will star in it or whether it will follow the premise of the original anime.

NO. THe reason we love Anime so much is becuase....ITS ANIME!!! We don't imagine anime in real life, we imagine anime as anime! if it was real life, then shows like fruit basket would fail terribly.

Well, if you count the Street Fighter Movie, then there already is an american movie with corresponding anime. That doesn't make it good, but it does exist. :P

I guess I'm not fond of the concept of live-action adaptations of anime. Maybe someone out there might do a good job, but this is Hollywood we're talking about here :eyebrow: so I doubt it.

I'd like to know where you heard that from. I'm not so sure I believe that... It's much like the "David Boreanaz" rumors for the silent hill movie... Even though it's on IMDB, that doesn't make it true.. It's only there because of overbearing fans. David Boreanaz hadn't even heard of the project, and the movie is going to be shot, most likely, in france.

I think the same thing applies to the rumors about Evangelion... It's just overbearing fans, and an unhealthy dose of paranoia.

The primary problem with live action adaptations of animation in the US is that American movie producers have no respect for animation, and therefore don't see possibility in treating the adaptation with respect as a real movie. When anime get made into american movies, they'll probably be made "cartoony."

If, however, you get a real fan with real talent for movie making, it may work. Though it's not an anime, I'm hoping that is the case for David Hayter's upcoming Metal Gear project.

I think they really have to make them older for live action. A 14 year old piloting an Eva would just look rediculous in real life. Heck, I had trouble with it when it was animated.

I have heard of the DBZ adaption for years. I really don't think a DBZ live action movie would be that great. But I think the Witch Hunter Robin show on Sci-Fi would be awsome!

The americanization of the names is a rumour sparked by the labels placed on some of the drawings -- eg. the art for Asuka's plugsuit had "kate rose" written on it somewhere. Whether that's the name of the artist or the name of character, is up for debate.

Theres a good fansite here

Yeah, it totally stinks. Kate Rose? Gosh, how much more original can they get :eyeroll:. I like the name Asuka, and you know they're making them older so they can throw in a bunch of sexual stuff and it won't weird-out American audiences.

There was already a bunch of sexual stuff in the anime. At least it won't be with 14 year olds this time (not that I approve of it with older characters).

I would instead of seeing just Van Helsing, I'd like to see a Hellsing movie and possibly a Vampire Hunter D movie. Now tthat would be fun.

I dont think though a Cowboy Bebop movie coul dbe done.

Actually, I think Cowboy Bebop would be the easiest movie to do. It's one of the most straight forward animes out there: gunfights, kung-fu, and space fights. The film industry has already mastered all of these areas.

Well, um, though I'll make a VERY short comment on this "no-discuss" show, there were reasons for their ages. Size and DNA were two major reasons. They shouldn't stray too far from Canon, otherwise they'll have alot of very upset fans.

I don't think anyone's mentioned Lupin... There was consideration of a Lupin movie. It was in planning, but it may be dead now. It would be easier than CB because there's no space stuff. Just slick physical humor and a lot of fun.

The liveaction DBZ movie was just a hoax made on a website.
also, there has been a Dragonball movie made that was liveaction. (it was made in Japan, though.) But trust me, it is NOT something you want to see.

So I've heard...

What I meant by a Cowboy Bebop not able to be done is that it would be hard to mak einto a movie. The series is long and it owuld be hard to make into a movie. What you could do is a Live action version of Knockin' on Heavens Door or possibly a extended version of the two Jupiter Jazzes.

Hmm... I had believed it because Funimation reported it as being true, but now they're saying it wasn't. Whatever.

Eva is also 26 eps long, and it's being made into a movie. Maybe it will be a trilogy... I mean, they can always shorten it... It's much easier to do with CB than with Eva, because most of the CB eps are fluff eps, and you could do all of the substance eps (shortened a bit) in one movie.

Yeah I have heard about live action DBZ for awhile now but it keeps getting tossed back and forth between companies

Any type of Cowboy Bebop movie would have to be a stand alone or just concentrate on the Vicious/Julia plot line. There's no way anyone would try to adapt the whole series into one movie.
