Excellent review, thalia! I couldn't have put it better myself. The Vision of Escaflowne is an absolutely incredible series that I highly recommend.

^Thanks y'all!! I have loved this series ever since they showed it poorly edited on Fox (they only showed like the first 10 episodes, I was so sad!), and when I saw the boxed set on Amazon.com for as little as $35, I knew I had to make this anime mine forever!
I'm glad to hear of other people who admire it as much as I do!

Box set for 35? Are you sure it was legit? A lot of people sell bootlegs off of Amazon...
(Not Amazon themselves but where Amazon allows users to sell their own items)

^I know what you mean, but it was legit. There were many "used" copies on sale for $35. The one I bought is a Japanese import from a distributing company in Seattle. It came with a nice sleeve and a fold-out case that held the DVDs. It was a set where there were only four DVDs, three with the complete series (8 or 9 episodes per disc) and the last disc is the movie. The company that manufactured it (or distributed it, I guess), was labelled 'fx' on the box. I am about 90% sure that it is not bootleg. If it is, then someone sure went to A LOT of trouble making the box and even designs on the discs!

I'm really sorry to tell you this, but FX is a brand of bootleggers from China... they are usually used for gathering funds for crime syndicats and such
http://www.digital.anime.org.uk/piratefaq.html
That will give you a lot more info on anime bootleggers, and don't think I'm attacking you, because I'm not, I was conned before myself, as was my friend, so in trying to atone for it, I've been trying to raise bootleg awareness where ever I go.
For future reference, if a DVD has more then six eps, don't buy it, I don't know of one legit domestic release then has more then six eps on one disc, heck most Jappense DVDs only have 2-3 eps per disc. And another tell-tell sign, if the price is too good, it probley is.
EDIT: Escaflowne was made by Sunrise in Japan, I also belive they are the same company that puts out the DVDs there. The English DVDs are distrupited by Bandai.

Generally true, but Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight, released by CPM, has 7 per disc, and they are high quality with nice extras as well. If only other companies would do the same, I would save a lot of shelf space and money.

I never knew that! Hmm... I have been considering buying the RoLW DVDs but my experiance with CPM's dubbing(the YYH movie) has been.... yeah.

I don't watch dubs anyway, so I don't worry about that stuff.

I'm still a little iffy about the whole tarot cards thing. Is it an okay series to watch? Tarot cards are a really dangerous and real thing... >_< I want to see it cause I've heard its so good, but with tarot cards and fortune telling I'm not so sure....

I'm so happy that you posted this! I was a bit, waiting for it! ( I think I should go out to buy it..) I loved the music in this series and the story and practically everything! But they stopped playing it a while ago, even if they played it until the end i had a bit forgotten of it.

I think they portrayed fortune telling as a dangerous thing, and that she should have confidence in her friends instead.

A great review on one of the best anime series of the 90's.
CDLviking wrote:I think they portrayed fortune telling as a dangerous thing, and that she should have confidence in her friends instead.
It does portray fortune telling as a dangerous thing. When the series starts out, you will see that Hitomi is somewhat not happy with herself. She feels that she needs to know what is going to happen before it happens and uses fortune telling for that reason. But as the series goes on, it shows her that if you are not happy with yourself and look at everything with a bad point of view, that you and others around you can get hurt by it.
But that just IMO.

Cause I cant find it on any of the OST tracks and appareatly you guys had some classical piece, while mine was like a rock... Anyone know anything about that?
Hmm, Promises Not Necessary was the real theme or the Opening Theme and Mystic Eyes was the Ending Theme.
I'm not sure about the US fox airing, because they edited some of the music out and put their own music in.

This web page may help you. List is all of the songs that was in the anime and which ones are on the CD's that are imported from Japan.

I've seen the whole thing and the Tarot Cards didn't bother me THAT much. You have to remember that stuff like that is no big deal in Japan. However, I can say this about it- Hitomi eventually learns (by the end of the series) that it's not a good idea to trust in her cards. She discovers that her fate is determined by the choices she makes and the things she says and does, not by cards. In fact, things seem to go better when she DOESN'T consult the cards. By the end of the series she packs them away, convinced that she's better off without them.

Well said. I don't mean to dig up a relatively old thread, but I wanted to comment on Escaflowne...
The story, characters, music... just
everything about the series is inspired and original. There's a certain depth to it that few series have, and the exploration of fate and such things are wonderfully done.
I love the series because of its fantasy backdrop as well... The choral music, breahtaking wings (Van!), pure love story, and complex characters make the show timeless and beautiful.
Escaflowne was one of the first animes I saw on DVD... and I love it to this day. I saw it about 3 or 4 years ago, but...
I still don't own it.

I just bought all of Escaflowne about a month ago, and it was my second time seeing. Escaflowne rocks my face off. That's all I have to say about this.

I'm glad to see more people liking Escaflowne.
The only thing that makes me mad about Escaflowne is, why they made two good songs and they didn't use them for the anime.
The songs are called If you and love.
Love is like a J-rock song, but its really cool.
If you was a nice song that would have been nice to have use at the end of the last EP of Escaflowne.

Where'd you hear those songs? On a soundtrack import?

Yes,
There are OST 2 for Escaflowne.
There are seven songs that were not use in Escaflowne, but they made it to the soundtrack.
I know that any anime or any movie for that matter have some songs that will not make it in.
I just wish these two did.
If you is a love song that mixes piano with a nice slow electric guitar solo in the middle of the song.
Love is a J-rock electric guitar song that has a nice beat to it.
I look for the Lyrics for them. And too, both of the songs are english.

I found the lyrics for them.
If You
Open the door
To a room I've never been before
Counting all the books I've read so long
Something is wrong Where love has gone
If I should cry
Thinking of the love I felt inside
Don't misunderstand nothing's the clue
I cry for you Cause of love its true
When does love
Speak words above evolving pain
Like if these tears turn to rain
Endlessly calms the sea
For you and me
If you're so cold
If worlds just hold
If want to lean
I'm here for you
If you
When does love
Create the worlds above our pain
Like if these tears were to rain
Endlessly for the sea
Still you and me
If you're so cold
If worlds just hold
If were to lean
I'm here for you
So if you
Close the door'
Cause the room won't need us anymore
Holding our words
Just fill those books
Sometimes love looks
Like if love has gone
So I won't cry
Now I know our love will never die
If I understand the reasons why
When you... if I and you...
Know that love is true
Love
If you find a way to love
Can you see and stay to love
In a sign called countlessness
Sketch the keys to you
Reaching for a post
Where one loves the most
As we learn in different ways
Free so dreams come true
Searching for a style
Care without denial
What we say despite of love
Collide into self-retreat
Can't we see that love can be
Something so precious
To cherish and hold and then
In so many ways to love
If we realize its love
In so many ways to love
If we realize its love
If you see ignite in love
So far to reach above
Can't you see that love can be
Something so precious
To cherish and hold and then
(...something so precious
to cherish and hold and then)
All so many ways of love
Can we compromise true love
It's those funny things in love
In our only way we love
Our love so precious
True love is to cherish
Our love so precious
True love is to cherish
There are three OST soundtracks and then there is another one called Lovers Only Soundtrack.
