[Fall 2015] Season of Studying

Fall means back to the school of anime.
「秋」/ 「飴村」
Much like the threads before it, this is a thread I
created stole from blkmage for the discussion of new anime that will be airing on TV in Japan in the
Fall 2015 season. Anime typically gets released and runs for a number of seasons. The year is divided up into four seasons: January to March is winter, April to June is spring, July to September is summer, and October to December is fall. Each season is approximately 13 weeks.
Here, we can talk about what shows look interesting, what we plan to watch, and generally get giddy and excited for things that we've been anticipating for a while.

Wow, compared to Summer there's very little I'm interested in here.
(Although, I suppose that's kind-of a good thing, since it means I can probably get through some more of my backlog again, finally...
) Anyway, here's what I've got:
Stuff I'll watch later (not during this season as it airs) after watching the show's previous season/reading the manga/etc.: *
Haikyuu!! 2*
One Punch Man Stuff I've decided to watch as it airs: *
Owarimonogatari - For obvious reasons.
*
Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru - Sounds interesting (I'm assuming it's solving cold case mysteries via bone finds or something?); hopefully it actually is.
*
Subete ga F ni Naru - Another mystery + noitaminA. Must be at least worth a shot, right...?
And stuff I might end up checking out if I hear good things: *
Comet Lucifer*
Concrete Revolutio: Choujin Gensou*
Kagewani*
Kowabon

I'm not sure, yet, if there's more than one or two I will watch.
Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka??
Season 2 of cute girls doing cute things.
I'm not terribly excited by this, but I will watch it.
Lance N' Masques
The last remainder of an order of knights continues to fight.
This might be worth watching?
Onsen Yousei Hakone-chan
A hot spring spirit is looking to regain her powers.
This might be worth watching. Or it might be ecchi. Can't tell which from the link.
Star Mu
A music school, with guys.
I won't watch this unless it looks more interesting later.
Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai
The balance of military moves from swords to magic to guns, but the MC can only use swords.
I might watch this.
So, yeah. Doesn't look good for next season, but we'll see what happens when Hulu and CR start posting new shows.

Where did summer go? Why are we looking at fall shows already?
These last few months disappeared on me so quickly.... I'm also not interested in very much, but that's good because I probably won't have that much time. And it's nice to not be continuously adding to my list of things to watch.
There are like 6 million sequels to things I've never seen:
Noragami,
Black Jack,
K-Project,
Monogatari,
Haikyuu. Maybe this season I could start one. Also, I've never heard of
Aikatsu before. Is this one of those idol anime I should watch (like
AKB0048) or just something to throw out?
Concrete Revolutio and
Comet Lucifer look like they have similar styles to me (probably the bright colors and abundance of patterns in the PVs). I'll likely try an episode or two of these. Plots look shaky though.
Onepunch Man will be a fun ride animated, I bet.
Is this
Star Mu the same as High School Musical?
Actually, I get a sinking feeling I'm not going to like this, the PV is a little dull and the boys all have the same face haha... skreyola, maybe I'll steal your plan and not watch it unless something changes my mind later.
Lance N' Masques and
Sakurako-san: it depends on the world-building of these two whether I watch them, but they seem to have potential.
I keep up with the
Komori-san wa Kotowarenai manga, so maybe. If the episodes are short, there's nothing to lose.
And finally I like Suara, the singer who's going to do the OP and ED for
Utawarerumono. Does this mean I'll watch the show? Probably not, but...

Definitely watching:
Haikyuu!! 2: If I don't die of excitement first. Training camp arc eeeeeeeee! The fangirling is strong with this one. I got my roommate hooked on s1 so we'll probably be watching together.
One Punch Man: All of my yes.
Will try:
Concrete Revolutio: Choujin Gensou: The music at the start of the pv reminds me of Kekkai Sensen, as does the plot a little, but the rest doesn't seem very compelling.
Fushigi na Somera-chan: I don't know what's going on in the visual on the site but it seems awesome.
Kagewani: Doesn't seem to be a lot of info about this.
Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru: it actually looks vaguely interesting, which is more that I can say about a lot on the list so far.
Shingeki! Kyojin Chuugakkou: Cause lord knows we need more shows set in schools.
Star Mu: For no real reason this reminded me of Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu LOVE! and I was giggling the whole PV through. I'm probably not gonna actually watch it though.
Subete ga F ni Naru: Can't say I really know what to expect but I hope it doesn't disappoint.
Tantei Team KZ Jiken Note: I like the character designs and it's a short so, doesn't "cost" much.
Young Black Jack: I'm conflicted about this, I'm paranoid it's gonna be disappointing considering Black Jack is one of the things that originally got me into anime.
Need to watch the previous works:
So behind on everything Monogatari.
Noragami Aragoto
Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen
Like some of you have said, it might be a good season to ignore shows I don't feel strongly about and catch up on backlog stuff.

This really is a season of sequels, isn't it? Probably the only one I will watch is Noragami Arigato, but I am stoked about it. In fact, I wanted to ask if anyone was interested in doing a Let's Watch thread on that. I think we'd have to start with the first season, though, b/c it sounds like not a lot of people have seen it?

I haven't heard of it before. I wonder if it's a serious thing.
By the way, Hulu has OnePunchMan and Heavy Object, if anyone's watching either of those.
[ETA:] Also, Chivalry of a Failed Knight, which I think might be Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai Rakudai Kishi no Eiyuutan.
[ETA:] Also, STARMYU.

Owarimonogatari episode 1 (double-length special):
And here it is folks, the beginning (...of the beginning
) of the end of
Monogatari! And man, was it fascinating. I didn't think that there was much left to delve into when it came to Araragi himself, but this arc just proved me quite wrong (and it even did so with practically no fanservice, for once!
). It also featured some interesting comments on
SPOILER: Highlight text to read: 'majority rule,' and how the whole thing with the class (and especially the teacher) broke his trust in others while at the same time solidifying his own internal sense of justice. Oh, and presentation-wise, the debate scene was fantastic-- I almost felt like I was losing it there, too, LOL. And ha, that reference to the old 'vampires needing permission to enter' rule was awesome. Can't wait for more!
Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru episode 1:
Hmm... well, while the visuals were nice and it was kinda amusing to see the kid actually being the 'adult' in their kinda-friendship (as well as it not being romantic at all-- she's engaged to someone else), this wasn't anything special, just decent. I'll give this 3 ep.'s; however, I'm more interested in catching up on backlog this season than I am watching a show that's merely 'decent' instead of 'great,' so I might end up dropping this anyway. *shrug*
And
Subete ga F ni Naru: The Perfect Insider episode 1:
I actually loved this.
It was literally all dialogue, but the little bit of intrigue + the MC's personalities and interactions + all the low-key back-and-forth + etc. was just so... different, I guess?... that I was glued to the screen regardless.
(Also: Loved that OP!) Quite looking forward to more!

LanceNMasques ep. 1 - That was... okay. A lot of potential, but a bit on the wacky side. I'll give it some time to grow on me. 3/5.
[ETA 10/9:]
Heavy Object ep. 1 - That was... not impressive. Too much sophomoric humor, and while the premise is marginally intriguing, I don't know that they really did much with it, so far. Also, what is with the high command, that they don't drill enough to keep weapons in good condition? I might give this one more episode before deciding. 3/5

Chivalry of a Failed Knight ep. 1 - This has a ton of potential, but a lot of problems. Way too much fanservice, for one, and sophomoric jokes, but at least they didn't go for the low-hanging fruit on the
SPOILER: Highlight text to read: slave-for-life thing, which was averted pretty well, though I would've been happier with a
SPOILER: Highlight text to read: "This is my command: treat me like an equal, like you'd treat yourself." sort of thing. I really like the premise about Ikki's abilities and the social commentary that surrounds them. I may pick this one up, but I haven't decided. Plastic Memories had an interesting premise, but it wasn't very satisfying in its execution, so I'll have to see how this show turns out, if I keep watching. 3/5
This is looking like a middle-of-the-road season, isn't it?
Also,
SPOILER: Highlight text to read: am I the only one who thinks while he was stealing abilities, he stole Ichigo from Bleach's Bankai form?

So, yeah...
(Onsen something) Hakone-chan ep. 1 - So, good news, bad news. Good news: so far, looks like it's not ecchi. Bad news: It finished up the short episode with a horrible cliche. In spite of the rather terrible first episode, I think I might give this one more episode to see if it grabs my fancy. 2/5
Komori-san (whatever) ep. 1 - Another short, and it wasn't as good as Hakone-chan. Not digging all the camera-on-chest shots. If her friends really cared about her, they'd ask the other students to stop pestering her. I highly doubt I will watch a second episode of this. 1/5
StarMyu ep. 1 - Conceited student council aside, I really think I'll enjoy this one. I hope the stuck-up guys learn to be less haughty. I'll almost certainly watch this all season. 4/5

So, as you've probably noticed, I'm breaking from my policy in previous seasons and giving a lot of stuff I hadn't planned on even trying at least a chance, if it's on CR or Hulu. Today, I watched:
Asterisk War ep. 1 - Not impressive. There's a lot going on, so maybe I'll watch another episode, but there was a lot in this one to distract from the plot: bad fanservice, cliche interactions, pointless antagonism, arrogant princess... 3/5

Tantei Team KZ ep. 1 - That was pretty good. It moved a lot, for a short (well, it was twice as long as most shorts), and it looks like it might be pretty good. It has potential, at least. 3.5/5
JK Meshi ep. 1 - That was a waste of 4 minutes. The animation didn't even match the voices, and it was all flat. 2/5
Sakurako-san Bone Investigations ep. 1 - A bit creepy, but very well done. The visuals are spectacular. Not sure how much this show is my sort of thing, but it's of better quality than most of what I've seen this season, so I might pick it up for the whole season. Angela Lansbury Syndrome? 4/5

Added a new show this week!
Haikyuu!! S2 episodes 1-2:
I just marathoned S1 and fell completely head-over-heels in love with it (see my full thoughts on that
here!
)-- and the two ep.'s that have been released so far of S2 are just as fantastic.
Oh my gosh, I cannot get enough~! <3 <3
Owarimonogatari episode 2:
Whoa. As awesome as last week's (double-length) ep. was, *this* ep. was actually many times *more* awesome!
SPOILER: Highlight text to read: For one thing, that was way more intense than I was expecting (in a good way! ). And for another, ah, so it is indeed continuing to delve even more into Araragi's past/"what he's made of." As I said last week, I'm quite glad to have been proven wrong in my assumption that there was nothing much left to delve into when it came to Araragi's character, because this is fascinating.
Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru episode 2:
This was a lot better than the first ep. (although, given the nature of this particular case, it wasn't exactly pleasant
), and showed some neat background/hints (with Shoutarou's surprise martial arts training + Sakurako's apparent past trauma), as well as showing that Sakurako actually does have some normal human feelings.
Still not sure whether I'm going to keep on watching this, though.
And
Subete ga F ni Naru: The Perfect Insider episode 2:
Wow-- I was so immersed in this that when it cut to the ED I was actually surprised, because it had only felt like it had been on for about 10 minutes at that point.
Here we got a little (amusing) background on the female MC, as well as the (really creepy
) manipulation of the scientist girl when she was younger. Also, I'm continuing to seriously love the low-key interactions between the two MC's (as well as all of the little body language/expression things
). And that cliffhanger was great, too. Can't wait for next week!

35th Test Squadron ep. 1 - *facepalm* The best plot of any show I've watched this season, and it's drowning in fanservice and cliche interactions (why does every show this season have a grab in the first episode?). I'd rate this higher, if it weren't for the fanservice. MAL forumites say it gets better quickly, so... The plot is thick and interesting, so I'll give it another look next week. I'm interested to see what happens when the new girl
SPOILER: Highlight text to read: figures out MC is a witch (I think that's what it means that he has wicked sword moves and a special attack the team doesn't want him to display). 3/5

Perfect Insider ep. 1 - What I just watch? I have no idea what kind of show this will be, but this episode was excellent. 4.9/5
Shomin Sample ep. 1 - Well, that was a lot better than I expected. Still not convinced it won't be terribly ecchi before long, but they handled it better than most of the other shows this season. There was no grabbing, etc. It's a weird show, and if the fanservice doesn't get any worse, it might be a lot of fun. But I'm afraid it may take a nosedive in the next episode, so, I may not pick this one up. 4/5
GachiUsa 2 aka Is the Order a Rabbit? 2, ep. 1 - That was pretty fun. 4.4/5

AniTore ep. 1 - Those camera angles... I'd hoped to watch this and get motivated to exercise more, but it just made me feel awkward. The show was funny, but the fanservice angles were a bit much. 4/5
Hakone-chan ep. 2 - That was really cute. Risque, but not ecchi, and a few laughs (not very long episodes, but still fairly satisfying). 3/5
Heavy Object ep. 2 - Great episode, but random fanservice moment almost knocked me out of the narrative flow. On reflection, I can accept that maybe that was the incongruous thought going through his head, but still... 4.5/5
Failed Knight's Chivalry ep. 2 - This episode was 3/5 until the bath scene. The little sister's nonsense was bad enough, and the stuff afterward, with Ikki and Stella talking about his family was pretty good (almost brought the episode to 4/5), but... Ugh. That went totally pear-shaped very quickly. 2/5

StarMyu ep. 2 - Pretty good plot, though it moves kinda slowly because of the musical numbers. Predictable development with the king at the end, and I know how that'll go, if not in specifics, in general. 4/5

Sakurako-san's boooones ep. 2 - In spite of the ED fanservice, I have decided to officially pick up this show for the season. I like the little glimpses into Sakurako's past, which probably tie in heavily with the OP. Any episode where
SPOILER: Highlight text to read: a life is saved in the course of investigating a death is a good episode, all things considered.
4/5
Tantei Team KZzzzzzz ep. 2 - I'm not going to pick this one up. It's not bad, per se, but it's pretty boring. 3/5
35th Test Squadron ep. 2 - I'm not sure I'll watch any more of this, what with the contracts with entities. Also, this show is rapidly receding from the things that interested me about its plot. 4/5

So far, I'm enjoying Sakurako's Bones (that sounded creepier than I thought) and Utawarerumono the most. Sakurako's unification of scientific facts and empathy is not very common, usually highly scientific characters are cold based on "all things are really just science", whereas for her the science seems to make it all the more... lofty? holy? Venerable, is probably the best way to put it. Or I may be reading into it too much. >_<
Utawarerumono is worth watching if only for the rebellion it has going against peeping tropes. (I really don't know what that word means, but I figure you get my point.) Finally, a NORMAL reaction from a male protagonist, and a little honesty (or at least, equal treatment) for the heroine. (warning: while it isn't really nsfw, it is rather awkward. Expect to get walked in on if you watch this scene.) That aside, the background art, chara design, animation quality, and extreme likeness to the PSP Monster Hunter setting is what really draws me to it. I had no idea it was a sequel, and it seems to be standing on it's own well enough that I don't feel like I've walked in on something.
Also OwariMonogatari. So far, it has everything that's good about Monogatari, and none of what's... bad about Monogatari. Of course, it's only episode 4 3, but I'm sticking around. I love the mind games, and Ougi's face is perfect for that role.

Watching:
Haikyuu!! s2 eps 1- 3: So my roommate and I decided not to watch together, as she's better at marathoning things, so waiting for it to finish. And I'm a serial pause and screencap and go back and rewatch bits 20 times over-er. So I'd probably be horribly annoying to watch with and it takes way longer than the standard 24 minutes. But anyway, I love it and I pause and screencap and go back and rewatch bits 20 times over like a scary person. The pacing's seemed a tiny bit slow, but Yachi's been so great I don't actually mind and it might just be me being too excited for what's to come. They've also changed the order of things up a little from the manga, if I remember correctly
SPOILER: Highlight text to read: for e.g. I'm sure they meet Ushijima after they meet Yachi, although I might be wrong. The extra screentime for Shimizu's been nice too, although there was a bit of unnecessary fan-service which I don't remember from the manga. It was pretty low key though and technically the boys are subjected to similar treatment so, at least it's fair I guess.
Tantei Team KZ Jiken Note eps 1 - 3: I didn't expect much from this, especially since it's a short, but it's pretty cute. The pacing is way too slow though, seriously the first "mystery" should definitely have been solved by now. It being a short, I'll stick with it still.
Subete ga F ni Naru: The Perfect Insider eps 1 - 2: This has been something else, can't tell if it's gonna be as good as I want it to be, but so far it's certainly different. Everything about the show seems extremely carefully thought out and put together. Right now I prefer Nishinosono to Saikawa because despite her silliness and pouting she's an extremely interesting character, I guess we also know a little more about her too. The ending of ep 2 was super creepy.
MangaRocks! wrote:as well as the (really creepy
) manipulation of the scientist girl when she was younger.
Do you mean the she was being manipulated or doing the manipulation? Just curious, because I definitely interpreted it as the latter.
One Punch Man eps 1 - 3: I was a little worried with the first episode, for some reason it just didn't have the feel of the manga for me. I think the humour element didn't come across as clearly, but eps 2 and 3 have laid all those worries to rest. Also
Kageyama Kaito Ishikawa is love.
Other things I tried 1 episode of so far:
Young Black Jack: I'm kinda disappointed that they didn't show any actual blood. The older works weren't gory, but they definitely depicted blood where you'd expect it, it's about surgery and other medical things after all. It's also really over the top, but I can't really say
that isn't true to the original. I'll probably keep watching, but don't think I'll be missing too much if I don't get around to it.
Concrete Revolutio: It's ok, the split timeline thing makes it interesting, but I don't know if I like the characters much.
Mobile Suit Gundam - Iron-Blooded Orphans : Also ok. Nothing really grabbed me so idk. I'm bad at Gundam.
Utawarerumono - Itsuwari no Kamen: I liked this one the most of the 1 ep try-outs and I know the only thing it's got in common with the previous series is the setting (apparently some of the previous show's characters show up later though), BUT I decided I kinda want to see the original show first. Who knows when though.
EDIT: I watched Sakurako-san too. At least I watched about 4 minutes of Sakurako-san and then the music was bludgeoning me about the head and I just couldn't do it. Might try again later.
Also tried Attack on junior high but nah, it's not for me.

The Perfect Insider ep. 2 - This show has MPD. I really like the stuff between Moe and the sensei, the stuff with Dr. Magata, not so much. 4/5

...So, originally, I was going to wait until I'd read the
One Punch Man manga before I watched the anime, but the hype has just been too strong, so I decided to dive into the anime right away regardless. Unfortunately, however, certain personal circumstances occurred last weekend (a fire
), and our computer (along with almost everything else
) was fried. And since I don't subscribe to Hulu, I can't watch OPM on this phone I'm using, either
, so now I'm waiting anyway (until we get a new computer {and everything else
}). (Oh, and also because of this, I obviously haven't had much time to check out the 4 'maybes' I had mentioned that I might, either; hoping I can do so soon as well, though.)
Haikyuu!! S2 episode 3:
...Suffice it to say, I had quite a rough weekend
, and was extremely grateful for the consistent (and really needed) dose of happy that this show provides. <3
As for the ep. itself: I'm liking how interesting of a character the new girl is, as well as all of her (downright infectious
) reactions and amusing interactions (plus how she {finally!} draws out the other girl's personality a bit, as well).
Owarimonogatari episode 3:
Have I mentioned that this is fascinating??
I know I just keep on saying that, LOL, but hey, it's true! (Plus, it's also had practically zero fanservice, which in comparison to the rest of the series overall is kinda amazing {and very much appreciated!} in and of itself
). Seriously, just wow...
Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru episode 3:
IDK; I still don't think that this is a "great" series, and it's certainly not anywhere near the awesomeness of the other shows I'm watching... however, there's just something about it now that I seem to like (although I'm actually not quite sure what that is...?), so I guess I'll keep watching it after all.
And
Subete ga F ni Naru: The Perfect Insider episode 3:
GeneD wrote:Do you mean that she was being manipulated or doing the manipulation? Just curious, because I definitely interpreted it as the latter.
^ Yeah, sorry, I could've worded that better, LOL-- yes, I meant that she was the one manipulating that guy, and that it was creepy.
As for this ep.: Whoa... just, whoa.
I was expecting some sort of locked-room thing, but I was *not* expecting
SPOILER: Highlight text to read: the apparent third main character to be the first one to die, nor the director dude to be immediately offed at the end, too. Also, holy crap--
SPOILER: Highlight text to read: it was obvious that scientist-girl was trying to seduce/manipulate that older guy when she was younger, but I didn't expect that she/they would actually go that far. Talk about a seriously messed-up kid... Oh, and the interactions between the MC's were as fantastic as always, too
, and I think I picked up some clues that might be used later. (I am also already planning a marathon-rewatch of this show once it's done, since it has that feeling to it that you'll catch more connections the second time around.
) This show just effortlessly pulls you right in, and I can't wait for next week!

@MangaRocks: Sorry to hear about your personal circumstances; I hope you get everything replaced and back in order quickly.
Heavy Object ep. 3 - This may be my favorite show of the season. That was awesome. A little haphazard with the use of explosives, but very thoughtful. Loved the classic literature reference and the consequences of
SPOILER: Highlight text to read: excessive competence being continued service in the same position. 5/5
Shomin Sample ep. 2 - The first half of that was pretty good, but the rest was garbage. Yeah, it went south as quickly as I feared. 2/5

Chivalry of a Failed Knight ep. 3 - That was pretty interesting, in spite of the fanservice, but I'm not sure how much more of this I can tolerate. 3/5
GochiUsa 2 ep. 2 - That was cute.
Rize's dad.
I wonder if we'll learn the whole story behind Tippy's situation this season. 4/5

I FINALLY finished my rewatch of season one of Noragami. Got to start [i]Noragami Aragoto[/] tonight, just eps 1-2. Looks good so far. I have read the manga for this arc and so far I approve of their adaptation.
Earlier, I watched one episode of that Sakurako bones show and was unimpressed. It was creepier than I thought it would be. Is there any consensus on this one yet? Worth watching? Or not?

Ep 3 of Utawarerumono: Previous statement redacted. Seriously, it was like a different show.

What aren't you liking about it? Anime News Network is giving it fluttery reviews about the mood being "clean" and "bubbly," but I haven't started watching it yet.
