I don't think there is any such thing... as far as I know VCDs would all be pirate stuff... but I could be wrong.

I'm checking out http://www.a1vcd.com right now. They say everything is original... Does anybody know about Vscape? That's the publisher of all these (anime) VCDs. Well, it may not be DVD, but it's a heck of alot cheaper than DVDs, and (if they're legit) better than buying HKs.

<Edit> http://www.anime88.com has AWESOME prices. Hopefully they're legit. I think I'll try I'm out and get back to you guys.

You would have to do a lot of fast talking to convince me that the site and the items are perfectly legal. I don't think there's such a thing as an "official" VCD.

"Our movies are sourced from Asian authorized distributors." - A1VCD

That means they get their VCDs from pirate companies in Hong Kong.

They say they are original, because THEY don't copy the movies, they buy them from people that do the copying THEMSELVES; By saying they are "original" they mean "original VCDs from the pirating company" There is no such thing as a legal VCD. That's it. If someone is selling a movie on VCD, it IS pirated.

Video Compact Disc

About half the resolution of a dvd, comparable to an old VHS, on a regular CD. Some dvd players can play them. Even if they 'say' they support VCD, many times they still stutter. They are best played on a computer. Also, most movies can't even fit onto a single cd, so the movie must be split onto 2 cds in VCD format.

No VCD will ever be legal, because companies will never want to distribute their movies on such a crappy medium. There are no official "VCD Players" to play them on, so it's questionable if people can play them in their homes; and the resolution is bad. There is no solid market for VCDs for companies to distribute their movies; they would be taking a big money risk.

Thus, resulting in not one single LEGAL vcd. Every vcd is a COPY of a real movie, because real companies (such as Paramount, Miramax) do not put their million dollar movies on VCDs.

People buy VCDs because they are very very cheap, this is especially true if you go to Hong Kong, where they are sold in markets and on the street. However import VCDs are a bit of a ripoff, for the quality reasons already mentioned by Orange Kitten. In addition to this, you can download about the same quality off a p2p network.

Either way, you're watching anime illegally (unless perhaps you are watching an unlicensed fansub, but you should never pay for those anyway).
