So, I have been looking around for a good source to find anime avatars and thus far am not having much luck, since I don't know how to navigate LiveJournal.
Any suggestions?

I have a photobucket account. I put anime pics that I like on there and crop 'em myself.

If I have something specific in mind (for example, a Calcifer avvie), I use Google image search first, usually for a precise size. (Since the maximum dimensions for a CAA avatar is 100 x 100 pixels, that's typically what I search for.)
If I can't find something I like and still really want that Calcifer avatar, I'll use the
avatar generator.
And sometimes I'll just Google "Calcifer avatars" or whatever, and occasionally I find a page filled with avatars. It's not as consistently successful as the other methods, though. Sometimes there isn't a good site, or I just don't find something I like.

If I were you I'd just find the perfect frame and then use print screen. That's what I do for my FB avys. Then you either load it onto photobucket or just upload it after you crop and resize it.

I either take screencaps myself or I go looking on pixiv and then crop them. I love pixiv.

Or you can shamelessly steal them from other forums.
Like me. I got this one from Animesuki. They're a good source because most series popular enough to have their own subforum will have a thread dedicated to making avatars of the series. Good source of static and animated avatars.

You could just use images found in Google and resize them.
