Overdone women: Does this bother you too?

One of my big pet peeves in anime is the fact that they can't stop drawing women with huge cleavage. Yes, I am a male, but I don't look for that in women, and I know that I am not alone. At least I hope not. Does this annoy you too?
Note to mods: This was the least offensive way I could think of to address this issue. If I still screwed up, I am sorry. I wanted to get this off my chest (no pun intended) in the least offensive way possible.

Related story: My only anime figurine is of Ryoko and Ryo-ohki from Tenchi Muyo. Ryoko is showing some cleavage in the figure. My wife asked me to take care of this, and I made some sort of cloth cover for that area, which actually matches the figure. We were both surprised how well it turned out. :)

Doesn't bug me. As long as they're not in some state of undress I don't care. Different standards for different people, though.

I don't care if a character has a lot of chest; there are real people out there with fairly large cleavage. It only becomes a problem for me when the character is made out to be nothing more than a walking pair of breasts. Which seems to be the case 80% of the time.

So yes, it does annoy me.

It depends whether it's realisticly portrayed or sexually portrayed. Sometimes a character design can actually have meaning to the plot. Lust from FMA for example has a dress that's a bit revealing in that area, but it makes sense because of her name. However, when a girl is portrayed with unrealisticly and inhumanly large bossoms and cleavage just to play it for fanservice, that's when it ticks me off. So, I guess in certain situations it does bother me.

Agree with Ryu. Although it doesn't really bother me because I'm a woman myself and I'm also a serious artist, it's still an annoying concept. I'd say the most bothersome thing about it is if the woman is only an object of fanservice with little important personality.

It really gets me when they protray kids that way - twelve year olds and what not (love hina, you oughta be ashamed!).
But for that matter, take a look at how EVERY person in anime, with the exception of some males and a few old shrews, is supposed to be "beautiful," aesthetically pleasing to an abnormal degree. Come on, so we're supposed to believe that every girl out there is a gorgeous, busty epitome of cuteness?
ugh!

Other then, if Bleach didn't have the women that it does. Then no males would watch it. Pfffff, like it has a story to it!

Fixed.

But seriously, as one of those women who is a "overdone" woman, no. I exist. I'm glad that such women are acknowledged to be out there. As long as they have some substance behind them it's not a problem. Anime isn't necessarily unrealistic when it comes to physics and proportions (it can be, but so is Barbie), so I can actually see why there would be attention drawn there- it can be hard not to notice when I'm running around! That's just how they work.

I don't mind if anime chicks have big boobies as long as they also have a character OTHER than "lol boobies".

I'm sorry, you must never have watched Love Hina, because there are no 12 year old girls portrayed with huge cleavage in it. That's what happens when you try to name-drop a series you know nothing about!

Anyway, no, it doesn't bother me. Why would it bother me? Women with large chests exist in real life, so why shouldn't they exist in anime?

Besides if every woman was drawn with small chests then people would just accuse anime of pandering to lolicons so whatever.

Yes, it bothers me. I mean, if it's realistic, than no. Like Yuuko from xxxHOLiC and Lust from FMA, it's a normal shape and is not as round and huge as beach balls. It only bothers me if it looks like.....what I said, beach balls. Completely unnatural in shape. Thankfully, shapes like that only occur in anime I'd never watch anyway XD!!! And if you want a male opinion, my brother hates it when it looks unnatural as well. Basically, the point is.....if it's unnatural in shape and size, it's just PLAIN DISGUSTING! Even if they never show it bare. Covered or not, it's just....ewww. And nudity, for natural and unnatural, I hate, too XD!!!

Completely agreed. Women with implants are pretty gross.
And nudity, for natural and unnatural, I hate, too XD!!!

That must make it pretty hard to take a shower.

XD!!! Well I mean, I don't like to see it in anime/manga (or any kind of art media actually), there's really no point. Seeing yourself is a different story :P

I dunno. It depends on the context maybe. There's nudity in My Neighbor Totoro but I don't think anyone would complain about it. Most people just complain about the daughters taking a bath with their dad because they don't understand Japanese culture.

Nudity doesn't bother me, as long as it's in a place where you'd expect someone to be naked. Like if they're taking showers

I do agree on this matter as well as implants are gross. But since large chests exist in real life, then it doesn't bug me.

And you do have some really really large chests women in real life and they are not implants, that doesn't bug me is well. Because they were born that way and there is nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, but digital bikini are so much more fun, when you take a shower!

Overdone women bother me a lot, actually.

Where are all my Anime with guys in them. Every Anime these days is all about girls. What happened to them man.

I will always hate poor characterization more than poor character design. Happily, the two often go hand in hand so that I can save time by hating them both at once.

In short, most of the time, yes.

Judging from the first post and the posts that have been made in this thread, I believe "over-endowed women" is a better term to use for what the subject is ("overdone" could mean many different things. For example, when I first read the title, I thought you were referring to women who wear too much make up. >_>).

That being said, in anime, concerning female characters, I personally tend to focus on the character's personality rather than their looks. So no, the looks of a character usually don't bother me.
I don't think the art styles of anime should really be a standard to set ourselves by anyways, though. XD; Anime is a fairly flexible art style. It can either be very deformed or very close to realistic. Does having the art less realistic (aka: more "cartoony) make the anime bad? Not really. The story/characters (or lack of) make the show good or bad.

Personally, I like my women medium-rare... Still get a little of the juices in there. Really, that's where the flavor is. Anything more and you simply don't like the taste.

I was gonna kind of mention that. The girls with larger chests are older...but that doesn't mean that younger ones aren't also portrayed sexually. The manga is particularly full of fanservice - so much so that I chose not to read through most of it, though the anime is one of my favorites.

Wow, you and I are opposites. XD I love the manga of Love Hina but hate the anime with a passion (mostly because the art is hideously ugly, the show introduced unnecessary and annoying characters, and most of the plots were stupid).

And yeah I agree the younger characters were portrayed sexually. Not denying that! I'm just saying it wasn't done by giving them large chests (which is what the topic of this thread is). Shinobu is slightly below average (she's 13 or 14 can't remember), and Kaolla is pretty much entirely flat (she's 14 or 15). Really the only young one with a large chest is Motoko, but even hers isn't THAT big (she's 15 if I recall correctly). Naru is 17, Mutsumi is 20, and Kitsune is 19.

Besides, not like it's even unrealistic to have younger girls with large chests anyway, any more than it's unrealistic to have older women with small chests. Puberty doesn't treat everyone the same.

Might be because I saw the anime first? I found that the manga was a better product, but I never finished and I enjoyed the anime a whole lot. :)

Well, since I'm a woman it doesn't bother me that much, but it is annoying. of course though if you watch TV the chances are you're going to see some girl showing off photo-shopped cleavage. I guess they're supposed to make women feel bad and then buy the products they recommend... anime probably picked up on the trend. *sighs* Horrible commercials geared to make us want bodies other than the ones our Creator gave us. :(

Arya Raiin wrote:Horrible commercials geared to make us want bodies other than the ones our Creator gave us. :(

I don't think that's necessarily a true statement, that we shouldn't want better bodies than God gave us. I mean, I wouldn't want a ten year old who's 300 pounds to go "Well I'm just fat and that's how God made me so I'm not going to bother trying to lose weight!" Nor do I think it's wrong for someone who was born with atrophied legs to try and make them stronger, or even get prosthetic legs.

Plus, there's women with abnormally large chests that cause them problems and back pain...I don't think it's horrible for them to get a breast reduction so as to make things easier for them.

While I understand what you meant, and there is a bit too much of an emphasis on "Conform to society's standards of beauty!" it isn't wrong to try and get or have a body other than the one God gave us.

Quoted for truth. The only time I have a real problem with it is when "they" are so big, they have a mind of their own. I'm reminded of the anime "Grenadier - The Senshi of Smiles"--not only are her...girls...freakishly large for any natural human being (or barnyard animal, but we won't go there), but the way she uses them is so out of this world it really put me off. Seriously, episode one has her reloading her gun by giving a very convenient bounce and swinging her gun around, each bullet landing in the appropriate chamber. Umm...I know this is anime, but I didn't know they could do that. And it didn't help matters much that the main character enjoyed taking baths in nearby hot springs letting it all, pardon the expression, hang out.
