Anyone else excited for this movie? I heard some good things about it from Tim Maughan and was surprised to not find a thread about it here. Redline is directed by Takeshi Koike, and I believe it's his directorial debut (ANN syas one thing, MAL another). This movie just...it just looks very exciting. The visual style is incredible. Here is the tagline:

"A story about love, conspiracy, mass-destruction and the battle to survive revolving around the world's deadliest automobile race."

Yup, I'm sold. In case you're not, here some more plot summary via :ANN

JP's biggest dream is to win the Redline – the galaxy's deadliest illegal road race, only held every five years at a secret location not unveiled until practically the last minute. In order to get there he needs to qualify by finishing in a ranked position in the Yellowline race – something it looks like he'll have no problem doing, until his Trans-Am mysteriously malfunctions and flips out just short of the finishing line.

Waking up in hospital, with a bunch of his bones shattered along with his dreams, JP is shocked to find he's has in fact made the grade. It turns out the venue has been announced – and it's the fascistic, authoritarian military superpower state of Roboworld. As a result two racers have already dropped out – and not on ideological grounds either, more that they don't fancy being fired at while racing. It seems that the evil dictatorship that runs Roboworld are not too keen on hosting the event, and are already threatening to throw everything they have at stopping the racers before the starting flag even drops - including a couple of bizarrely terrifying peace-treaty defying weapon systems they've been keeping under wraps. Not, of course, that any of that is going to put JP off…

Trailer, and another. If you read nothing else in this post, watch these trailers

The official website has a longer one.

But yeah, watch it when it comes out where you are.

Yeah, you got me hooked.

I'll be watching this. The art style is cool. Like an extremely rendered colorful 80's anime.

The 80s art-style does not appeal to me, it never has. However I'll probably end up trying it...so we'll see.

Does it look 80s-esque? Hmm. I thought it looked quite modern, but I am known to be wrong...a very small percentage of the time =).

Sci Fi? Check. Racing? Check. Underground cannonball run storyline? Yeah.

Yeah I'll be watching this.

So, unfortunately this will be coming out in Japan on October 9 after screenings @ select film festivals. So it'll be a while before we get our futuristic underground racing thriller w/ romance and conspiracies...hmph. I was under the impression that this had gotten licensed and would be released later on this year. If it does get licensed, I'm sure someone will post it up.

To me, it doesn't have an 80's style to me at all.

But parts of it has an Alex flux style look to it, when I watch the trailer.

well in the 80's they had a boom in Japan and threw a lot of money around. Some of it landed in anime. Things like Akira and Ninja Scroll had a lot of frames of animation to them because of this, and a certain style.....so to me that's what it felt like.

Not to say a lot of anime today doesn't. Just seemed more prevalent then....jus sayin'

Well it does have the feel of the kind of style that you saw in Akira and Ninja Scroll.

Just when I watch the trailer, I had flash backs of Alex flux all over again from the some of the styles that was in the trailer.

ANN wrote:The production company Anchor Bay Entertainment has revealed in a Monday media alert for its Comic-Con International plans that Redline is one of the "upcoming Manga releases" along with First Squad - The Moment Of Truth. Both Anchor Bay Entertainment and the anime distributor Manga Entertainment are currently subsidiaries of Starz Media.

Director Takeshi Koike (The Animatrix's "World Record"), writer Katsuhito Ishii (Piroppo, Trava), and the MADHOUSE anime studio created the Redline film about the deadliest car race in known space. Leading the cast are SMAP's Takuya Kimura (Howl's Moving Castle, live-action Space Battleship Yamato), Tadanobu Asano (Ichi the Killer, Tokyo Zombie), and Yuu Aoi (Honey and Clover, Tekkonkinkreet).

The film will open in Japan on October 9 after advance screenings at international film festivals. Three new trailers were launched late last week.

Mania.com Review of the movie. It scored very well, as expected.

A more interesting tidbit: New 5 minute trailer. This movie is absolutely insane.

I know this going to sound bad, but.

Comic-Con International plans that Redline is one of the "upcoming Manga releases" along with First Squad - The Moment Of Truth.

I was more happy to read that then watching the trailer for Redline.

I think that five minute trailer is a test animation to show investors.
It looks really cool. It looks like this will be the 'it' anime movie of 2011.

Am I the only person wondering what Redd White is doing in this movie?

I don't know who these dudes are - they're certainly not the main characters, so they haven't a shot in a million of winning - but I'm sure I'm gonna root for them anyway.

Now watch them be the FIRST guys to crash and burn in the race.

o.o a movie about racing? With big explosions and awesome camera angles?
I'm in!

I bet the Green-haired chick dies though. If she's JP's romantic interest...
