I want to get it, I want to get it. I have no money, I have no money. Ah well.
I saw the first episode courtesy of Newtype, and loved it. Why? The somber color, Kino's reflections on what it means to be a traveler, and Hermes. Also, his face during the snipet of action in the opening reminds me of Kirika (probably spelled that wrong) from Noir, one of my favorite characters in anime.

For some reason I really wasn't that interested in this one. I saw the first episode on a NTUSA DVD, and it was okay, but I guess it didn't look like there was enough action or enough of an ongoing plot for me. I much prefer anime series with closely linked episodes to those with a series of stand-alone episodes. Another reason I prefer anime to US cartoons. Does Kino's journey begin to develop more of a plot during the next few episodes?

I watched the ep. from Newtype too and I thought it was pretty good. I've thought about maybe buying vol. 1 to check out some more episodes. 1 episode wasn't really enough for me to tell if I really liked it or not. On a side note am I the only person who couldn't tell whether Kino was a boy or a girl? lol

Okay, now this is freaking me out. When I watched the first episode, I was sure Kino was a boy. The thought that Kino was a girl never even crossed my mind. Then Chibi called Kino a girl. So I looked back in my Newtype articles to see how they referred to Kino, as "he" or "she". Well, they never refer to Kino in either gender. They call Kino "the traveller", Kino, or something else. So is Kino a boy or a girl?

I know. I was looking through the mag. trying to figure it out too and that article wasn't helpful at all. lol I even did a little searching around the net and some sites called Kino a boy, some a girl, and some didn't say one way or another, so I really have no idea. I think they're being vague on purpose for some reason I have yet to figure out. o_O?

>>am I the only person who couldn't tell whether Kino was a boy or a girl? lol<<
I thought the same thing. LOL I guess once you watch ep. 4 all will be revealed. *hehe* Yes, Kino is a girl. The story of how she became a traveler is in episode 4, which is a very good episode. My favorite story line so far was episode 2, I think. It just uses irony in the purest sense and it's a beautiful series from what I've seen.
Oh yes, definitely watch it in Japanese. They really messed up Hermes voice in the English version. Some people might like it; but, I heavily suggest the Japanese version.
I would recommend this to anyone who prefers a developed character and story series. It's not gruesome, but there is some heavier themes, because of the nature of some of the conflict she encounters. I hate to spoil the show for everyone by explaining what I just wrote; but, you'd really have to watch it.
Spiritsword, I honestly didn't want to buy this, but the kids talked me into renting it. I watched, thinking "snore bore" and was so pleasantly surprised. It is not, by any means boring. It's very unique, unlike any anime I've seen. It was actually a breath of fresh air. The art is top-notch. The stories are top-notch. It's just fantastic. And yes, I see a plot developing, but it is taking time to unravel, which really keeps you interested.
I would guess the series will go through with her travels and the conflicts which arise because of the belief systems and customs of all these towns she travels to. In all, it takes on some pretty interesting scenarios of what if?
