Ok, so I've heard of this anime Lucky Star, it looks so cute! I saw that there isn't a review, so is it clean? And is the sub cleaner the the dub, or vice versa? Or is it basically the same?

I haven't watched the dub, but the sub is pretty much clean as far as language goes. The one character does have some questionable hobbies, but mostly they're only mentioned, not shown. I'd say go for it - it's a great anime.

Thanks. That's the kind of stuff I need to be told about before I get to into it.

I think one of the characters that appears later in the series occasionally imagines other characters in yuri doujinshi...but nothing too pervasive.

What is the content from episodes 1-5 (which is on the first DVD)?

WAAAAAIIIIT a minute...the first DVD has only episodes 1-4 on them. If you're buying the series online and it advertises having 5 volumes on the first disk, I wouldn't recommend investing in it as it may be bootlegged.
That being said, I can honestly say that Lucky Star is one of the coolest and cleanest series I've seen in a while. The english dub is really cool, and the voices really match with the characters. As Kochana mentioned, the most questionable character in the whole series is Akira during the Lucky Channel segments, but it's not "Oh my gosh, back to the store you go" bad.

For the most part, Lucky Star is clean, but there is occasionally some mild to notable content of the sexual sort:
- Shortly after a certain character is introduced, there is a running joke about breast size; she is self-conscious about her flat chest.
- I think a couple times Konata makes references to breast sizes and there is at least one scene (a commercial with Haruhi IIRC) with chest-related fanservice. It's quick but still there.
- Some of the dialogue and sight gags could be taken as innuendo; of course that depends on how dirty a mind you have.
- Konata is constantly refering to dating sims.
- There is a running joke about Konata's father with regards to perverted older men who like schoolgirls.
- Like Midori said, later on in the series there's a doujinshi artist who likes to imagine her friends in yuri situations.
That's all I can really remember for now. Except for the commercial scene, which is a bit more detailed that the main animation of the show, there is little to no real fanservice of the visual sort. Even in an episode where the characters are conversing in a bath, naked, the animation is refreshingly clean, enough that you'll understand they are naked, but there was so much opportunity to get ecchi there and I was pleasantly surprised that they kept it tasteful.
Anyway, I know some people might have said it was really clean, but keep in mind that there are a few sexual jokes. It's a good series though, really funny, and definitely cleaner than most. I recommend it!
Oh, and BTW, I haven't seen the dub, I just watched fansubs. But if I can put my two cents in, watch it in Japanese. Usually for anime with a lot of kooky characters it's a lot funnier to listen to in Japanese, and this show has plenty of crazy people in it, haha.

Awww.... Akira was my favorite.
Well, there's that time she shoots a blurred out "bird". This isn't really bad, but in one of the Lucky Channels they get a fan-letter were the writer explains he's what they call a "Net-Gay, but doesn't swing that way in real life." Her assistant doesn't understand what he meant.
I'm pretty sure that later on the American girl (Patricia?) introduces Kagami to yaoi. Also, at least in my opinion, their female teacher seems to hint at being homosexual. I was probably reading to much into it. ( Example: The episode where they go to the beach)
By and by, however, I love this series. Its perfect for anime enthusiast and funny. I know its terrible to say this, but its few "questionable" content is done in such a cute way you really don't notice.
Hope this helps~

OH, I thought there was 1-5. So it's 1-4? Okay.
Thanks!

This is tangentially related, but I'm suddenly curious as to how the dub handles Shiraishi Minoru, the Lucky Channel segments with Ono Daisuke and Yuko Goto, and the EDs, particularly in the latter half of the series, when the live-action stuff hits. I'm especially interested in what they did with Ore no Wasuremono.

Live-action stuff? In anime? What?

The EDs for the first half of the series are Konata, Tsukasa, Kagami, and Miyuki at a karaoke place singing various old-school anime themes. The EDs for the second half are live-action sequences featuring various songs performed by one Shiraishi Minoru.

They kept the Japanese dialogue...that song was so cool!
