So... my fiance and I have been faithfully watching Hokuto no Ken... and it's such an awesomely (violent) nifty (violent!) and cool (VIOLENT!!!) show that I can't stop thinking about it! I get excited when it's time to sit down and take in a few episode of head exploding action... LOL... So, has anyone else watched it? Or even the horrendously horrifying horrible Live action flick that was based on it?
Thoughts, please!!! ^_^

Hmmm... is the violence (it IS gratuitous, I can admit...) but... is the violence what has offended, or the actual storyline?

I think the general thrust of the storyline is not very offensive (good vs evil, one strong hero protecting the weak and vulnerable against those who would exploit others for selfish gain, etc.). In fact I love this kind of storyline, because I don't have to think too hard to understand the story (not that I mind stories with good twists, but at times I just want to "enjoy" the show).
But because of this kind of storyline, it almost always comes down to some kind of confrontation between the good guy and heaps of other bad guys.
It is very violent as you would say. Don't know if that helped at all?

I saw the anime movie about 15 years ago. It was the most explodiest of movies I've ever seen. I'm pretty sure I understand where the motivation comes from to make a show that basically features martial arts techniques that simply cause people to explode in various ways, but I'm not sure it's a motivation I'd run with.

Shin seriously needs some bad guys who last longer than their introductory chapter. One volume down and Kenshiro's already killed near everyone he has in reserve.

I know there are several different series of First of the North Star... can you guys tell me which is best to watch? Perhaps a link where I can purchase the first DVD?

Hmm... we're almost done with the first series, to which I give an enthusiastic thumbs up to... But again, bear in mind that the series is INTENSELY, GRAPHICALLY, EXPLICITLY VIOLENT!!!
If an episode has aired with less than five heads exploding... I feel cheated.
and it has some killer 80's J-Rock... They almost channel Phil Collins for one song... <3

Haha! Gotta love 80's anime. I can't help but wonder if it's as violent as Berserk. Now that was a violent anime. More graphic than Berserk and I think I'd probably stay away. *L*

Fist of the North Star isn't nearly at Berserk's level of pure, unleaded violence of choice.

REALLY?!?!?! *goes slightly starry eyed at the thought of something MORE amazingly grotesque than HnK*
Hmm... But is the Beserk anime better than the manga, or vice versa?

The Berserk Anime is essentially the distilled backstory of the Manga, so while it has a reasonably self-sufficient storyline, it has a dreadful cliffhanger where the ending should have been but wasn't.
