Characters Doing Stupid (or Just Plain Dangerous) Things

So again with the characters, but I've been thinking a lot about Sanji and his smoking habit lately (yeah, One Piece has grown on me lately since I've been reading the manga more...I'm up to book 10 and this could easily become my favorite series). I watch him light up one cigarette after another, and I ask myself, "What, does he want to die young or cause himself problems later in life? And does he WANT to repel girls?" Also, he was clearly told by Chef Zeff to not start smoking in the first place. He did anyway.
It's enough to make me want to write Oda-san and say, "Hey, you know, Sanji's gonna kill himself if he keeps smoking. Please either have him drink gallons of green tea or send some character to get him to quit." I say green tea because I read it contains plenty of antioxidants, which the Herb Bible explains cuts the cancer rate among Japanese smokers.*
(Note: I don't know if anyone here smokes, so please accept my apology if you find this post offensive)
So have you ever watched a character doing something and you were thinking to yourself, "Nooooooo, don't do that! That's stupid!" or something? I have several times before, but it wasn't always for anime.

If characters were anything more than lines on a page, I would probably put more time into thinking about it. XD
But no. Lines can't get lung cancer unless it's part of the plot that they end up dying from it, in which case it was inevitable anyways. XD So yeah, I don't really care one way or the other. XD

Smoke doesn't really repel me unless it's too much and they stink XD
I just hate when characters can't figure out who they love XD

My readings of One Piece have led me to believe Sanji has bigger problems than lung cancer in his near future. If he's survived 40 volumes, I'm sure he'll be just fine.

So I heard you like anime.
. . .
Okay, that was a little mean. But seriously, dangerous/stupid things are most anime characters' bread and butter. And I think that most of us love them for it.

yah... like... what about those characters who fight with giant knife guns or bloody evil animal parts or something crazy? and they fight and jump off buildings and stab each other and shoot lasers out of their eyes and throw fire from their lungs....
"OMG INU YASHA DONT FIGHT THE MONSTERS! ITS DANGEROUS! just kinda... sit there and drink some tea with Kagome. You are safe now... my child... *pets inu yasha* "
XD
I dunno about you, but that sounds kinda dangerous. :I

Amen......Vash comes to mind this should be a thread dedicated to vash. Buut i kinda see what you gettting at you mean dangertous and stupid things like smoking drinking, and other "normal" stupid and dangerous things. I think it boils down to this they are moving pictures and well (don't hit me) cartoons (in a way not fully) so if the animater wants Sanji to smoke 2 packs at once and run a mile without stopping in like a minute because in the animated would physics and health is not the same as it is here. Space Jam tought me that and if i ever meet daffy duck and can beat the crap out of him without breaking him. Sorry little off topic

It bugs me when female characters in shojo make really terrible decisions over a guy. I just want to chew them out.

My great grandfather smoked three packs a day and lived to 85 and died not of lung cancer but of heart problems.
Also I doubt Sanji would die from lung cancer considering he has a bounty on his head now.

Sanji, whatever. Is no one concerned over Commodore Smoker's bill of health?

Smoker is probably okay because he can turn his entire body into smoke. In fact maybe it's necessary for him to smoke to live. Like if he stopped smoking he would dissipate. It is possible!

Um, this has been tickling my brain for a while.
In Advent Children (yes, I can sense you all rolling your eyes!!), why does Tifa and Marlene (I think?) smile at each other while Loz is on the floor! I mean, shouldn't they be running? I mean, a creep (in their circumstance) just walks in, asking "to play", and fights with Tifa. I mean, in actuality, shouldn't Tifa be telling Marlene to run or to hide? o.o Instead of smiling at each other?
Another thing--in Sailor Moon, the Sailor Scouts always transform in front of the bad guys. I always wondered why the bad guys never notice that the one girl standing in front of them has changed into a totally different person.
Oh--and in anime in general. What's with the naming of an attack before attacking? It's like--"heads up, enemy! I'm attacking you with lightning bolt!" I guess it's for the benefit of the fans?
As for dangerous decisions--L and Mello eat so unhealthy (I mean, endless dessert and chocolate?).

Lol, DBZ
Yeah, they should like.. attack first then explain it
I guess it is for the fans ^^
And yes, wouldn't you know it was me if I transformed right in front of you,"Who is that girl
" Lawlawlawlawl XDD

Now that I think about it, I was kind of in a ranting mood earlier. Yeah, they're just characters and all, like Radical Dreamer said.
But from what I've read already, Sanji is almost at the bottom of the list of doing dangerous/stupid things.
I definitely agree with the "attack name" thing. Not only is it dangerous...but it kind of grates on the audience's ears after a while. Am I right? Perhaps it was for the fans in DBZ, but it's like everywhere now.

You see, Tifa is basically saying, "Don't worry. I'm about to beat this guy in the face."

There's always that theory that the transformation scenes happen in half a second but are slowed down for T.V.'s sake. Also, all of the "monster of the week" baddies are always killed on the spot. It's almost like "You know who I am. I'm going to have to kill you now. <B["
Hey now, some attack names are awesome. Who wouldn't want to announce something like "Supreme Thunder" or "Shine Aqua Illusion"?

True, but still. If I was standing in front of you one second and didn't move. Then there was suddenly someone eles.. wouldn't that signal something or something like that?
My head hurts o_o
And yes, Tifa is giving Marlene a reassuring smile that every thing will be alright ^^

It's the classical transforming magical girl weakness. They have to change their clothes in order to satisfy their vanity and sense of fashionable justice. Then they have to twirl around in their own little world for a moment in order to distract themselves from the fact that they're basically stripping in public and then dressing themselves again. Their enemies, however, are typically just so bewildered by this insane behaviour that they fail to notice that a well-placed bullet or two could take these girls down while they're busy spinning around half-dressed and oblivious.

How about:
STAR SERIOUS LASER! or STAR GENTLE UTERUS! or STAR SENSITIVE INFERNO!
That last one really sounds like something your doctor should look at.

How do you fight evil with a gentle uterus?
There's always that theory that the transformation scenes happen in half a second but are slowed down for T.V.'s sake.
This isn't a theory; it's essentially correct, especially in the case of Sailor Moon. Proof of this is in the episode where Haruka is attacked by a monster. Michiru shows up and transforms into Sailor Neptune pretty much immediately. This shows that the transformations are mostly instantaneous, with the sequences being just for show (and to fill time :p).
What's with the naming of an attack before attacking? It's like--"heads up, enemy! I'm attacking you with lightning bolt!" I guess it's for the benefit of the fans?
Actually it has its basis in magic. Most spells require a verbal incantation, as well as specific gestures/movements in order to cast them correctly. Thus, it stands to reason that the attack moves in anime are the same way, requiring the correct incantation and movements to "cast."
This does have exceptions though, as sometimes in Sailor Moon characters are shown using attacks without saying the name or doing the motions.

You're not supposed to inhale cigar smoke. If he's smoking correctly, he oughta be okay.

And all Roy Mustang has to do is snap his fingers. XD

Well, I could understand all that I've quoted you saying just now, but...what about characters who DON'T have magical powers and just shout out the names of an attack that looks just like a kick? Or a punch?
Maybe they're showing off? Like, "Ha ha! I named my kicks and punches! I am so much cooler than you!" XD
Just a thought.
Hey, maybe I should rename this thread to something like "Characters Doing Unusual Things" or something.
