Rocklobster's 2008 predictions for anime!

PostPosted: Thu Dec 13, 2007 10:20 am
by rocklobster
Every year, I present my predictions for the following year. I've been pretty good with them (for example, I predicted Death Note would air on Adult Swim). So here's my predictions:
1. Sci-fi Channel will negotiate licensing deals with other companies besides Manga Entertainment.
2. It'll be open season on Geneon. Other companies will pick up many of their bestsellers. Look for FUNimation to pick up the Tenchi Muyo! stuff as well as Last Exile, Hellsing Ultimate, and Gadguard.
3. Sci-fi channel will air "Ghost in the Shell 2"
4. FUNimation will go back and redub the One Piece episodes 4Kids dubbed, using their cast instead of 4Kids and restoring the edited footage. They will also pick up the One Piece movies.
5. Disney will license the Only Yesterday anime for an official DVD release.

This one will not happen any time soon. As much as the Navarre CEO Kerry Deacon talk about the Geneon's Fall a Positive for FUNimation, I don't see any of the titles be pick up untill Geneon gives them up and not try to re-start Geneon USA.

If they do turn the titles over later this year, we will not see any of the dvds out untill 2009.

They other may happen.

Please at least try to put threads on the right board folks. It's not very hard.

I don't mean to be pessimistic, but this one I heavily doubt will come true as well. Disney isn't open towards a few certain scenes in that film, and I really don't believe they're enthusiastic about it now, let alone ever.

My understanding is that Disney DOES have the rights to Only Yesterday, but is refusing to release it.

:bang: I forgot all about that. Its true that Disney has the rights to Only Yesterday, but after watching it and didn't like those few certain scenes. Shelf it and just sitting on it.

Disney purchased the rights to distribute all Studio Ghibli films a couple years ago, so I've heard, but under the formal agreement that they weren't allowed to edit a single frame. They seem to have some issue with Only Yesterday (not sure), so rather than break contract or release it anyway, they've "Delayed" it indefinitely.

Yeah, what.

Why? They have done a phenomenal job with Ghibli's films. Only Yesterday is essentially shelved, but other than that, they've done great.

I predict that ADV will come out as the overall winner in the Geneon
stakes followed by Funimation.
I also predict that Code Geass will become Bigger than anything else on
AS except Inuyasha and possibly Cowboy Bebop.
I further predict that ADV will have the first non-Manga Works series to air on Ani-Monday.
Also that I will make it up to at least 90 DVDs in my collection before this time next year.

*laughs* Inuyasha isn't even that big. I think more people prefer Cowboy Bebop, Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist, or Death Note over Inuyasha.

I'll bet our good friend Roy Mustang could give us the average ratings for all of those shows. :p

Uh, someone needs to do their homework, Cowboy Bebop and FLCL were some top rated anime on Adult Swim.

Bleach, Death Note and Blood + are doing well, but still haven't top or will ever top the ratings that CB and FLCL got.

The only thing that Code Geass will do is tick people off. Since there is no ending to it and a season two is being work on now in Japan.

Rivaling Inuyash? Dang, Code Geass must be a big deal.

Rivaling Inuyasha on Adult Swim is like rivaling RC in the cola market.

To point out, why Inuyasha is still on.

I will not say her name, since it will send a person in a hate rant. Inyuasha is one of the lead programmers favorite anime.

Disney has, in my opinion, done a remarkably respectable job with the Ghibli titles that they have released... and given the way they are always in the crosshairs of ultra-Right protest groups for every frame of their animations, nobody should be surprised at the titles they've chosen to forego.

What I don't understand is why they haven't negotiated with Ghibli to move the other titles into other hands. They probably don't have the right to just sell them to anyone they choose.

I say we all write a letter to John Lasseter and tell him it should be released through Miramax. After all, he's in charge of Walt Disney animation now and is friends with Miyazaki.

And the dub for "The Cat Returns" is great.

Inuyasha: Well, I'd assume if they are still running it, it's still bringing in pretty decent ratings. They let a lot of shows go that didn't do it for them.

4. FUNimation will go back and redub the One Piece episodes 4Kids dubbed, using their cast instead of 4Kids and restoring the edited footage. They will also pick up the One Piece movies.

This one's sort of a given at some point. But, I don't believe they can actually release the previous 4kids-dubbed episodes until 2009.

You make an excellent point. Which means if Sonic X is ever going to be redone (and unedited with the original Japanese episodes in their entirety [sp?]), it's going to take a while...and frankly, with the VAs being the ones from the video games, it seems like FUNimation picking up the rights would ruffle more feathers than a few.

Besides, I think I've sadly seen the FUNimation logo on some of my Sonic X DVDs.

Wait, What's wrong with Funi? O_o I love that company, (it took me a while to like it, because I didn't like some of their earlier dubs...but I like them a lot better than a few other companies out there) ^^;

Actually, they scrapped the video game cast to make room for that of the television show, who have gone on to dub the games in their place.

Ugh, it's getting harder and harder to believe the post-Dreamcast Sega is able to make anything good out of their franchises anymore. x_x

Hey, I still like some of the new games...

But what I'm saying is that if the rights for Sonic X expired for 4Kids, and FUNimation picked up the series, who would do the voices? It would be pretty pointless to have the people already doing the voices entirely re-dub the series, and getting new VAs would stir up some trouble. So it seems that Sonic X might not get an uncut redub. If it does, and doesn't bring up any controversy, it'd be a miracle.

Well, if Funimation was to say pick it up. It would have to be people that work for Funimation that would do the dub.

And believe me, if 4kids lost the rights to the anime and someone else pick it up and re-dub it. It wouldn't cause that much controversy. The only controversy that you would hear is, people partying like its 1999 if the thing was re-dub.

Most anime fans can't stand 4kids and what they have done with the animes that they have got.

Well, true. But what I was referring to as being problematic was that they fired off the original videogame VAs just to use the 4Kids ones. Would they fire the 4Kids ones to do the videogame voices if FUNimation re-dubbed it?
