"Saishuu Shiken Kujira"???

Okay... 
I just finished downloading all 12 episodes of the Undine subs of this anime title... "Saishuu Shiken Kujira". I watch it, and... I'm like...
I watch the thing... It seemed to be kinda strung together at first, but... around episode 8 or so... It just got weired. I have NO CLUE what that was.
You know, there was a whale in the sky. Yep, you heard me, a WHALE. IN THE SKY. But, this IS an anime, after all. I just write it off as one of those little idioms of fantasy universes. They even almost forget about it at times. but, like I said, around episode 8... Everything goes out the window. The story, the characters, the world itself.
Guys, help me... If you know ANYTHING about that anime that could help me comprehend what I just endured... a thousand thanks to you!
