Animes you "outgrew"?

I recently, on a whim, bought the collection one set of Voltron at Hastings for like, $17.00 on a whim. I've only seen a few episodes from when toonami used to air it and on youtube, and i have a soft spot for the retro stuff. 15 Episodes for 17 dollars! Wowee! that's like, 1.15 per episode! Quantity versus quality, my friends. Now, i know this show is hailed a "classic" and all the Gen. X'ers on the site are probably going to wanna stone me for this, but.... Dang! That's like, 17 dollars i could have taken a girl out to dinner with, or, bought an exhaust tip for my car. I'm a really big fan of Robotech and despite its mediocre animeation and sometimes obtuse dubbing, enjoy its engaging storyline. Voltron, on the other hand, i don't even think it's fair to compare the two. I wouldn't mind the cheesy dubbing and laughably awful action scenes if there was any depth of the story, but none. Now, this is a great set for nostalgia, but i'm afraid nostalgia is the only basis on which i can recommend this. Sorry, guys. Well, i'll admit, it is kinda funny sometimes and Prince Lotor is a pretty epic villain. But then, this reminded me of animes i used to think were so cool, but then i'm like, "meh" about. You know, like I used to think Macross II was the coolest, bakc when i was 14 and just wanted skimpy costumes and explosions. No good story or likeable characters there. So, what are some animes you regard in that light? Things you just pushed aside as your taste changed?

The only thing that has change is my view of Robotech. The only thing that I like is Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles OVA now.

After seeing Macross and seeing how it was better then Robotech. I can't feel the same way about Robotech other then new stuff that isn't a cut and paste job of different animes all roll into one seires.

Dragon Ball...

No Dragon Ball will live forever as long as Toonami continues to show it (Of course Ive seen the whole show, but I don't mind seeing re-runs. It actually brings back old memories). And Speed Racer was pretty cool, my favorite part was the fact that they spoke as fast as the cars they drove. Ive gotten out of Pokemon, the new seasons just don't appeal to me because the best season was the first. I think thats about it.

Actually, DBZ and Beyblade are the only anime I've ever outgrown.

None really, though one could say that since I realized DBZ was the same thing over and over again I quit. Seen one saga you have seen the show.

Bad guy shows up, bad guy beats good guys. Good guys get really powerful. They fight. Good guy wins by the slimmest of margins. Bad guy is defeated. Moment of peace.

Rinse, insert new bad guys, repeat.

Other then that one, never outgrown any anime, I own G Gundam for goodness sake XD

Gundam Wing. I loved it when I was twelve and then I tried to rewatch it when I was seventeen and I wanted to throw something at my TV. The writing is simply abhorrable (in English AND Japanese), the plot is messy, the battles are mostly boring because the majority of the characters are demigods. It looks really cool, but that's about the only praise I can lavish on it anymore.

Just Hamtaro and Hello Kitty, although I still think they're cute and will play my Hamtaro GameBoy games. But for the most part, they're not what I'm crazy about.

Yeah, same here. I used to love it when they played it on toonami, but then when i got back into it and started buying the dvds, i was most disappointed. I then sold my gundam wing dvds to my now ex girlfriend.

A flippin' men.

Gundam Seed used to be on my "must watch" list for a while. But after maturing and really looking at it, it's really boring and shallow.

Ingredients for Gundam Seed:
Take one 1979 anime classic
RE-hash the general story, but be sure to remove all substance and what made that series a classic.
Replace with unhealthy doses of teen angst.

...Rinse and repeat. -__-

As I think about this, I feel that I have outgrew most of the Gundam line series.

There is only three Gundam series and two movies that I like now, Gundam 0080, 08th MS Team, Gundam Z, Gundam: CCA and Gundam Wing Endless Waltz.

I watch Gundam Wing out of nostalgia now, but its nothing like Gundam 0080 and 08th MS team and really the Endless Waltz movie was alot better then the series.

So, the only two that I have really outgrew is Robotech other then Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles OVA and most of the Gundam series.

RE-hash the general story, but be sure to remove all substance and what made that series a classic.
Replace with unhealthy doses of teen angst.

That is one reason why I'm not a fan of newer Gundam series, since its re-hashing a story that has already beed told. Then again, I never did like Gundam 79 or do I think its that much of a classic.

I hear ya on Gundam Wing, it is boring, but I like Gundam for the Mecha anyway *shrug*

08th and other Gundams defiantly have more substance then other, however I never liked the Original, oddly enough, the animation was just to...eh.

I haven't gotten into the Naruto, DBZ, Bleach craze, so I couldn't have outgrown them. Inuyasha...hm...maybe, its not quite as cool as it used to be, and its so long. I do wanna see the fourth movie, but thats probably it.

I can't really think of any series that I used to be very interested in, only to dislike them now. Naturally, the first that come to mind are Pokemon and DragonBall Z, but as long as the episodes are old, I don't mind catching a re-run once in a while to relive my elementary school afternoons. XD I started out on series like Rurouni Kenshin and Trigun, both of which I still find myself enjoying today. I think the only anime that readily comes to mind is the .hack//Twilight series that used to air on Catoon Network. I watched and enjoyed it back when I was first getting into anime, but looking back, I think I only liked it for the art, which I don't even really like that much anymore now. XD

Aside:Has anyone else visited the homepage for Gundam:IGLOO?
Looks to be a pretty nifty new series in the Gundam line.
Back on track:Since I didn't get into anime until in my 40s I can't say I have 'outgrown' anything since I still am discovering new series and
rediscovering why I love old favorites.

Well, I doubt this is really even considered an anime, but Id also say SD Gundam and Hamtaro. Mind you that was long time ago.

Gundam:IGLOO is a side story of Gundam 79. Its about the 603 Technical Division Unit that tests and studies experimental weapons to aid the Zeon.

Too bad the mecha designs for Endless Waltz wasn't use for Gundam Wing. Sadly, the first mecha designs for Gundam Wing were very nice.

I never had a problem with animation in Gundam 79. After all, it was done in 1979. I just didn't care for the story. I give a hand for one thing in the UC Gundam timeline, I like the uniforms, mostly the red Zeon uniform and the Titans uniform.

...

You know, I can't really think of anything either. XD

Sure, DBZ and Pokemon aren't my frequent choices for Anime, but somehow that small bit of nostalgia keeps them in my memories and I still like to catch an old episode once every three or four months.

The uniforms where cool, and yes, the Designs in Endless Waltz where some, if not the, best in Gundam Wing.

Oh I know its just the era, but I can be picky about the animation of a show, after all half the fun of anime is the animation

Most magical girl shows tailored to really little girls for obvious reasons...but Sailor Moon will always have a place in my heart.

Pokemon and DBZ are both obvious answers. I watched them ALL THE TIME when I first discovered them, but the more anime I saw the less I enjoyed going back to this stuff. Also, I don't know if this quite counts as "outgrowing," but I gave up on InuYahsa around the end in spite of being a major fan when it first hit the states.

I think I have outgrown a lot of shows that were kid shows, mostly because the writing and voice acting in American dubs lower the bar to the point you can practically feel your IQ drop with it.

Digimon, Sailor Mon, DBZ, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Voltron... I am about as impressed with Gundam Wing as I ever was and never cared for Pokemon, One Piece.

Sailor Moon. I checked out a few of the videos from the library once (before I knew that wasn't very appropriate). Now I don't care for it very much. Poke'mon too. XP

Well...lemme see...
Hamtaro, Sailor Moon (my first anime when I actually knew WHAT anime was), Speed Racer (my first anime PERIOD), I don't really watch Naruto anymore...just to make fun of the Eng. voice actors, DB, DBZ, DBGT, Beyblade, Poke'mon, Mon Colle Knights, Fighting Foodons (...no comment), Kirby (is that an anime?), Tenchi Muyo (...)

But I still watch Digimon! Go figure...

Oh man, there's so much. The one I really want to say is Fushigi Yuugi. I used to love it-- and I never actually watched very much of it! In middle school, I felt very "adult" because I liked a series that had a lot of sexual content, but then I realized that that was really stupid and the characters were annoying and the plot was unoriginal and I discovered that when little girls with no taste really want to seem "adult," they get into hardcore shipping yaoi, and that's just not for me.

I would be lying if I said that I didn't still harbor a soft spot for Tasuki and Chichiri and Ameboshi.

I will proudly profess that I have NEVER outgrown Pokemon. I still love it and play the games and follow the anime plot and draw fanart and gush over the manga and ship random couples and defend it to my "mature college-age friends" and I would watch the episodes in Japanese if I actually had time. I'M OUTTA THE CLOSET.
