I am wondering how many episodes of Naruto there are, the Japanese version of course. I have been searching around and I am getting mixed answers. Some say it ends on episode 240. Others say it ends on 220. And some even say the series is still going. Anyone have a definitive answer? Also, is the show still going?

If I am reading what I've found right, the original Naruto TV series had 220 episodes.
There is a sequel TV series called Naruto: Shippuden that picks up about 2 years or so after the original ended. This series is still ongoing it's current episode count plus the 220 of the original series may account for the 240 total.

Bananas that an anime can go on for that long. I was just thinking the other day about how many episodes that Pokemon has all together, and I think I lost count after 300!
It does make you wonder though--if the Naruto Manga continues, how many volumes will comprise the entire series?!

There are 220 episodes of Naruto. Episode #220 "Going on a Journey" aired in Japan on Feb 8 of this year and was part one and ended the series.
Part two carry over to Naruto: Shippuuden.
Also, you have four Naruto movies.
Another movie is on its way for Naruto: Shippuuden.

That's difficult to tell, because it depends on estimates of when the manga will end. These are, by definition, inexact and uncertain. However, the first part of the manga covered only 135 episodes (followed by 85 episodes of filler). Presuming that the second part of the manga is roughly the same length as the first, that would place the overall series at 270 episodes, plus whatever filler is included.
This is the bane of any adaptation running alongside its source material. Even the episodes that are not filler are too stretched and slow-paced to be worth the time (in my opinion, anyway).
