The "Month Without Anime" challenge...
PostPosted: Thu Jan 18, 2007 8:12 pm
by Stiletto
Imagine there was a situation where you suddenly couldn't have access to anime or manga for a month.
Would you be able to contain yourself for an entire thirty day period, or are you likely going to bump into any withdrawal effects during that time?
EDIT: I added a few specific points on Post #9 just so we know this involves "roughing it".
--
Even though I have never, ever gotten through a month without once watching or reading a series, I believe I could
now get through with it in one piece, given that I've kind of 'softened' my devotion towards the hobby. Though it's safe to say that I would've probably gone nuts if this same question applied to me a couple of years ago.

Actually, I think I could do it fairly easily. I only have time to watch anime a couple times a week these days anyhow.

A month cut off from Anime and Manga? That's crazy talk.
Yeah, I could definitely surive without withdrawl. For someone as engrossed in the genre as I am, I watch and read surprisingly little of it outside of some newfound series being tapped dry.

i seriously don't think i could do this. as it would include not going to CAA also right? or would it still be okay to talk about anime and stuff still...

Well, I HAVE done a whole media fast for an entire month (aka no books, movies, TV, computers, games, or even MUSIC! The ONLY "badish" thing I did, was look at images off my DVD covers, cause I'm just a visual person, and need a bit of colour stimulation^^) as an encouragement to read more from the Bible and spending more time with God. Out of all of us that signed on the youth retreat, only me and one of my friends really made it. Some said it was "too easy" and quit, some made little rules like "can check email twice a week" and stuff, but I tried so very hard to stick to my sorty of contract we wrote out. I felt like it would help me grow in God, and it was a fun time where my friends and I ended up having lots of Bible talks and stuff^^ Of course, I did complain on occasion about it being hard, but stuck to my word on it!
So with anime being a little piece to the media, yes I have been able to (somehow^^) manage...

I could do this. I do on a regular basis, in fact. I have a really good method to help me keep with this plan of moderation. They call it "college." XD

Easily. In fact save for a week ago, I haven't watched anime for approximately 3-4 months.

That's a good question. I guess I could probably frame this challenge in terms of your exposure to the fandom in general (which includes discussing anything anime-related, writing fanfiction, drawing fanart, cosplaying, going to conventions, etc.). Going to CAA is fine for other things, but not for things anime-related.
An easier way to think of this is if you're stuck on a desert island that has everything you need
except anime/manga.

I'd live. Not quite sure what frame of mind I'd be in at the end of it, but as long as I'm not addressing sports equipment on a first name basis, I'm good.

if you put it that way, then probably yes. i'd be more focussed on finding a way to get off the desert island than on having a manga to read, or an anime episode to watch...

Pshaw. No way. It's one of the few things that entertain me when I'm not cooking, cleaning, or doing schoolwork.
If I were on a desert island... hm... does the island have monkeys?

That actually describes most of my months. Without Anime.

Thanks to school, work, and being just plain picky, I've actually done this several times. But, I've never been happy about it. Most of my hobbies and duties are things that I appreciate mildly or indirectly. A good anime or manga series is one of the few things I actually enjoy in the act, for its own value. Not having one around makes everything a little harder to appreciate.

Yeah, I'd never make it. XD If it were just based on reading manga or watching anime, I could totally do it, but drawing is one of my OTHER favorite hobbies (and yes, I draw lots of fanart and lots of pictures that are in the "anime" style), and I totally know I'd crack before the month was over. XD Also, if this includes listening to any J-pop/rock...I suppose I could make it. I've got plenty of other music to listen to, that's for sure. XD But yeah, since drawing is a component in this, I'd definitely cave. XD

I actually had to do that my first month of my internship in Florida last year. After the first week, it gets much easier to deal with.

I could do it easily.
The only time I usually once anime is on the AS block. Sure, I'll pop into Youtube every once in while but the only DVDs I have ever purchased were the Rurouni Kenshin ones mainly because it would never be replayed on CN again, if you put it on hold from my library it takes about 6 months to get it, and Youtube usually takes it off if it's put on.

I actually did it when I started out.Since that was when AU was the only anime I watched it was rather easy.
Though I have gone days without when I had to stay over night in the country.
I think since I am now into collecting DVDs that it would be easier to go without
watching tv for awhile and I could certainly ration when and how much of my
DVDs I watched per week, though I doubt I would actually make it too a totality
of zero in a month. If I simply watched my DVDs I wouldn't watch as much is all.
Manga I only read one per week so it wouldn't change any.
btw:Until SPIKE started to air Voyager reruns I hadn't been watching Star Trek
too often lately..just way of analogy.

I've done so before simply as a part of the cycle of my life. I have many interests, so I'm not tied to anime or manga to the point that I would find it extremely difficult to give up. Actually, the big thing I'd have a hard time giving up for extended periods of time would be reading, simply because I know (from experience) that I perform better (school or work wise) when I can read on a regular basis.

I'd live, I think. I don't watch anime that much and there's really only one manga series I actively follow.
...if I wasn't allowed to fangirl, though, that'd be an entirely different kettle of fish. XD I don't think I'd make it.

Not watching anime or reading manga: Easy
Not going onto CA/AA or speaking a word about anime/manga: Not as easy
Not drawing anime-style or looking at anything remotely anime/manga-like: Ouch.
But it's not impossible.

Yep. There are definitely monkeys -- but if you're looking for
Monkichi, you're out of luck.

I guess I can relate in the opposite sense. My appreciation for a few of my hobbies have somehow doubled after spending a considerable amount of time away from them. It's kind of like reuniting with an old passion that you left behind and feeling like it's your first time back on it again (this is usually after a very long absence).
But I suppose that depends on one is attached to the hobby, and the circumstances that led them to give it a rest in the first place.

If you really want to see how long you can last without anime or manga at all try it this Lent.Just a suggestion for anyone who wants to really think of doing it.

I don't really watch that much anime to begin with. I've spent many months without anime. (Like Mangafanatic, I have an aid to my plan of moderation. It's called real life.)

Instead of stopping altogether it might be best to simply cut down on the number of shows one watches. For example if you have a large enough DVD/Video collection you might try to watch only 1 or at the most 4 episodes per week.
Going totally cold turkey may be a bit over extreme the first time, which is why I'm suggesting if you really want to see how it would be for you to go without that you simply try cutting down the number of anime you watch per week and then see
how you feel about it.
I also suggest trying it out during Lent since as everyone knows Lent is the period of time for giving up and reflection.
Though in the long run I don't see how it will make much of an impact unless one
has gotten so totally overboard that anime is the only thing that they watch.
