Quick question regarding The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

i was browsing through the anime reviews and i saw reviews for both the animes: Full Metal Panic! Second Raid and Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu. then it dawned to me that in the anime, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, in the episode "Mysterique Sign", Koizumi (the psychic) uses two attacks on a giant cave cricket. They are: fumoffu and second raid. does this have anything to do with the two Full Metal Panic OVAs that i mentioned earlier?

It may have been a homage to Full Metal Panic OVA's. They did that alot in TMOHS.

Plus, Yasuhiro Takemoto was the director of Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu and Full Metal Panic? Second Raid. He did the storyborard and was the episode director for episode 11 of THOHS.

On another note: Full Metal Panic? Second Raid, FMP: Fumoffu and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya were animated by Kyoto Animation.

wow. didn't know TMOHS was related to Full Metal Panic through the directors and animators. i suppose that's the best explanation. thanks.

As WingZero alluded to, TMHoS features a MYRIAD of allusions to other anime. Look at the manga that Haruhi references when she's explaining the set up for a mystery to occur. I wouldn't be a bit suprised if these were references to Second Raid, especially in light of its many connections to MHoS.

TMOHS has alot of homage.

A list of homage that they did and I do this as spoiler tag.

[spoiler]Gundam SEED

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (highly successful fan made murder mystery sound novel and is now an anime)

Slayers

Space Crusier Yamato

Macross 7

2001: A Space Odyssey

Kinnikuman (the manga)

Principality of Zeon (gundam)

Gundam

Parody of the opening to Visions of Escaflowne

could you explain how TMOHS relates to the anime titles you mentioned above? if it's too much work, you don't need to. but it would be greatly appreciated.

I can't tell you for sure, because it's been a while since I've seen the series, but this is the connects as best as I can remember them:

Space Crusier Yamato-- The gaming episode in which the gang of the SOS Brigade become space ship flying heros would be my guys on where we get SCY references here.

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni-- Since I've only seen two episodes, I can't say for sure, but the atmosphere of the show coupled with what little of it I've seen makes me say that the "Island Murder Mystery" episode is very likely the big homare to HnNKN.

Since I don't know much about the other series, I'll leave more educated members to make the connections on those. :P Great list, WingZero!

I went and double checked some of the references. I had to correct some and add some others:

Shuffle!-- the manga Haruhi flashes
Pheonix Wright--the way Haruhi pulls off her "I know who dunnit!" motion is a direct reference to the game.
Full Metal Panic--from what I understand, there's a character who shares Kyon love of ponytails in this anime.
Gundam-- Haruhi's crimson and gold commander's uniform in the gaming episode looks shockingly like Char Aznable costume in Gundam.

Okay, this is just off the top of my head on what I can remember.

In one ep, one character was reading 2001: A Space Odyssey

The quote "Glory to the Computer Club!" = "Glory to the Principality of Zeon!"

Another quote "I'm launching!" in TMOHS was also said by Amuro in Gundam.

A comment is made in one ep of TMOHS that was very close to the same comment that Sagara Sousuke said in FMP: Fumoffu.

In Escaflowne OP, Hitomi is looking up at a shooting star in the night sky and then there is a close up of her face. One of the character in the OP of TMOHS does the same thing.

I think I read somewhere that it was the same animation studio that worked on Second Raid as TMOHS

That's correct. They were both animated by Kyoto Animation
