Bleach: the significance of its title

i was just wondering what the significance of the title "Bleach" stands for? i can't really see how it relates to anything that has to do with the manga...

It's absolutely nothing.

Kubo Tite is a music buff, and the series is named for Nirvana's first record.

I know, it's kinda disappointing. : /

Just, random cool english words^^ Although Ichigo's a redhead (er, orangehead as far as anime coloured hair goes^^) I just think in my mind that it's refering to his hair...

woah. that's totally random. is that how Kubo got the titles for his other mangas?

seriously?

I would have thought that it stood for like Bleach White...as in the masks of the Hollows...or maybe the ghosts?

wow. then i guess zombie powder was based on a song too. but it's sorta cool because Kubo can make a story based on a song.

It's romanized as Bleach. It's written as burichi 「ブリーチ」in Japanese. I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

If I recall, the manga vaguely talks about Ichigo having bleached his hair and Kubo Tite specifically supported that interpretation in an interview. But Denimcat has what I believe to be the deeper reason.

I like Bleach, but I think it has a poor title. If you want to search for more meaning, however, you could view literal bleach as a cleansing agent, in the same way that shinigami cleanse Hollows. If Bleach were an 18th century classic, you know this view would be touted in English classes.

that was sorta what i was thinking, as the idea of starting this topic appeared in my mind while i was washing my shower with bleach.

Well, I think Bleach is a cool title even if it doesn't carry a specific meaning. Can you imagine how it would be it had some other title?

Go Ichigo!
KuboTite Manga #2 (or whatever number it is)
After Zombie Powder
Raging Hollows
Soul Cleaning Service
Shinigamis Ahoy!
Bad boy Aizen

Ok maybe "Soul Society" might work but hehe... couldn't resist some humor while thinking of some alternate titles for Bleach. XD

Well, since the title doesn't matter, how about Pie Crust Chronicles?

I whole-heartedly support this title and intend to call the series by this name from here on out.

Other than having no meaning, I agree that it is a good title. It seems apt and it serves to identify the series. At least it doesn't follow the Adjective Noun Name pattern (ie Reaper Guy Ichigo).

yeah. the title separates the manga from others and makes it obvious. it also, in some unusual way, makes the manga sound more interesting. the title is easy to remember, easy to pronounce, one word long, and just plain mysterious...

I always thought they should just call it Soul Reaper.

In Japanese, which I would doubt they would leave untranslated in english.

I also support Shinigamis Ahoy!

but if they left it Shinigami when they publish it in English, the title would sound cool and would attract a lot of people. i think it sounds cooler than its English translation, Soul Reaper.

Undoubtedly, but for whatever reason they didn't. Also, already is a manga named Shinigami-kun as well as a rakugo (comical monologues) named Shinigami

I think they should call Bleach this.

The anime title formerly known as Bleach, because fans didn't like the name and we couldn't come up with a better name for the title at this time.

I like to see them put that on the cover of a dvd!

Fans like the name. Who doesn't like the name? I like the name. Read UC's post; he likes it.

yep. bleach is definitely a good title for the manga and i don't think many fans have a really big problem regarding the title, as it is the rest of the manga that makes up for this.

Unfortunately, the longer the series goes on, the more it becomes "The Way Cool Adventures of Ichigo and his Adoring Lapdog Rukia,"

bleh, no amount of bleach will wipe away my disdain for Ichigo!
