Gonzo's newest project: RomeoXJuliet

Okay, CAAers, Osaka is quite excited. Yesterday, Gonzo released the trailer for their newest project: RomeoXJuliet, which you can view here via youtube (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZg7EsxqBbo). That's right, guys, it's an anime based on Shakespeare's classic play "Romeo and Juliet." This move is no doubt prompted by the success of Gankutsuou, based on Dumas' classic novel "The Count of Monte Cristo."
Regardless of their motivations, I'm pretty jazzed. Now, this anime is
based on the classic play by Shakespeare, but, as you'll see by the trailer, there have been some major changes made. The primary change is that Romeo is the son of the powerful Montague family who rule as tyrants reigning over the aerial city of Neo Verona. This dictatorship is opposed, however, by the Capulet family. True to form, the children of these two families fall in love, submitting themselves to the cruel hand of unbending fate.
The series is slated for release in April. The total number of episodes to be released is, to the best of my knowledge, unannounced. Regardless, I'll be happy to see it. Here's to hoping it lives upto it potential.

My goodness. o_o It certainly LOOKS like it'll be gorgeous. XD Am I right in thinking that the April release is for Japan, so we'll be getting it fansubbed by then? Anyways, I'll certainly look into this; it looks very promising. Thanks for sharing that!

...As interesting as it looks, I certainly don't remember ever reading about a flying horse in the original play. XD;

Yeah, as I said-- It's only BASED on the play. Obviously, a great deal of artistic license has been taken; erego the plot changes (the Montagues being dictators, for instance).

Yeah, if I remember correctly, The Count of Monte Cristo has mecha and aliens in it, from what I heard. XD That's certainly taking lots of artistic license, but I'm interested in the outcome for this one, anyways. XD

I'd actually like to see both in time (RomeoXJuliet first, though, because. . . well, I'm a girl. And, duh, it's Romeo and Juliet). I generally enjoy book to movie adaptations-- especially when you get the joy of seeing a new angle to a story you know.

Being a fan of Shakespeare work, I plan on seeing this one.
I hope that Romeo and Juliet is better then Gankutsuou.
I didn't care for Gankutsuou that much at all.

*was actually thinking of trying something like that in the future* xD;;;
But this looks cooler than anything I could've ever thought of! xDD
Sooo.
;; I think I'm pretty excited for this. xD;;; It looks very pretty. ;_;
YAY, FLYING HORSIES. 8DDD

Just HOW many times have Romeo and Juliet been done?
There's West Side Story, The Seikai Trilogy, and WAY too many others.
Mod note: I fixed your italics tags so they work now. And there can never be too many Romeo and Juliets.

Yeah, didn't Gonzo do Kaleido Star, too? I'm pretty sure they did, at least...Anyways, I'm still excited about seeing this!

I'm watching Gankutsuou right now and really enjoying it, so I'm hoping I'll like RomeoXJuliet. It LOOKS like it'll be fun.
It's too bad they didn't pick another play, though--Romeo and Juliet HAS been done tons of times. Still, I'm a Shakespeare fan, so it'll still be nice. ^^

G&G Entertainment and Gonzo work on the Animation. Not sure who did more, G&G Entertainment did Co-Production for Kaleido TV and the OVA.

I really dislike Romeo and Juliet. From what I've seen in the trailer, it doesn't look too appealing to me. The animation is great; top notch to be precise. But the "artistic licenses" it takes seem too much for me. Why is it that these small fights between two people turn into some great epic battle. I don't know, but it doesn't look too interesting.
Oh and the red guy that looks like the red mage. I wonder who he is.

As Corrie said, Gonzo was the studio that created Kaleido Star. However, I hope the calaber of the art work is a lot more impressive. My largest qualm with Kaleido Star was the excessive looping of the art (plus, the story
WAS a little repeticious). With that said, I hope that Romeo and Juliet avoids those pitfalls.
Coincidenally, Kaleido Star and Romeo X Juliet share more than a mother studio. Both Junishi Sato and Reiko Yoshida who were both members of the staff for Kaleido Star are also working on Romeo X Juliet. I'm a little surprised, however, to see the role that Junishi Sato is playing in this all. Sato was the original creators of both Pretear and Princess Tutu (Two of my favorite anime) and part of the directing staff for anime such as Cowboy Bebop and Sailor Moon. The weird thing, however, is that he's listed as the
audio supervisor for Romeo X Juliet, a role he hasn't played on any other anime. That strikes me as odd. Reiko Yoshida is playing something of a normal role as the head of series composition.
On an unrelated note, many of the gaming fan among us will be jazzed to hear that Hitoshi Sakimoto is directing the music for the series. He gained popularity as the composer for both Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy Tactics. This is, however, the first time he'll be the composer for a complete anime series. Judging from the music on the trailer, it sounds like he's working up an epic score that I'm very excited to hear.
And yes, I am excited. XD

Wow. The animation looks gorgeous, and I'm really liking that epic classical music. =D It definitely seems interesting, thank you for sharing.

No, it doesn't.
The anime based on it might have, but um...that sounds like it ruined it pretty badly.

Radical Dreamer was referring to Ganktsuou, that anime based upon Count of Monte Cristo. Let's try not to be too negative. Remember, different isn't always bad.

I myself, actually like to watch alternate universes in series^^ Like say an OVA or movie alternate retelling from the actual show, I quite enjoy^^ It's like a fanfic almost: same characters, but different personalities (sometimes) and stuff that happens^^
Yeah, I've seen pics from this show a while back, and it must be the wonderful artwork that attracted me to it^^ I plan on watching it too when it comes out. I think the pegasus works well, something suiting for a character named "Romeo" or even a "Prince Charming" too sorta thing^^
I'm just hoping that with this anime, it won't have... bad stuff in it :/ I mean, it IS Romeo and Juliet afterall. Thin kthat's about my only concern there...

XD Yeah, I was referring to Gankutsuou, the anime based off of The Count of Monte Cristo, in my post. I've been a fan of Dumas's book and the more recent movie based off of it for a while, though I never did get around to watching Gankutsuou. I need to look into it someday, though.

While there's no way to make any definite judgments on that score just by looking at the trailer, there are often hints that can be taken. Notice in the trailer that the woman don't wear busty clothes. Additionally, there isn't any [to the best of my knowledge] clingy clothing featured in the trailer. That right there encourages me. It's obvious that they aren't trying to lure an audience in by waving fanservice in their faces.
Furthermore, if the resemblance between this show and Kaleido Star will also exist in its level of fanservice, it will be minor if not almost non-existance. Gonzo doesn't seem to REQUIRE fanservice from their shows as Last Exile and Kaleido Star proved. Here's to hoping that's the case.

That's a good point. I had some of the same concerns that Tenshi had at first, but I'm hoping Gonzo will be able to pull off a romantic series without the unneeded sexual content. Also, from looking at the trailer, it seems to have a darker, more serious feel, and I find that those types of shows have less fanservice due to their less flirty nature.
