According to Anime News Service talks are currently underway in Japan for the North American licensing of the mega-popular anime series
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The North American distrubition will
include not only the anime but also the manga and novels as well. There is no news right now as to which company or companies are interested in the series or wheter or not a single company will handle the entire package or wheter it will be doled out to seperate companies.
Interest in obtaining the North American rights seems to have been spurred by the grassroots popularity it has achieved among the fansub community in the U.S. and Canada.

What has surprised me is that ANN has been slow to pick up on the news.I checked on their site and they didn't seem to have anything on it as yet.

Well, aside from talks of the manga and books coming over, it's really not 'news', if you ask me. It's not actually a license announcement, and 99.9% of people figured it's been going through the licensing process anyway. I expect ANN will report on it when there's REAL details, like which licensor(s) is/are in talks, or when it's a finalized license.

ANN makes sure if it is confirmed. Anime News Network and Anime News Service do cross post their news with each other, but ANN makes calls to confirmed the news.
This is why I trust ANN and AOD in their news more. ANN makes sure that its confirmed, before posting the news and AOD forms have alot of members that work for US anime licensed companies and company reps that post any news or info on stuff.

That's interesting.I found it originally mentioned on Theotaku.com.When I went over to the ANS webpage they indicated that the source they used was apparently
someone from the Japanese company that apparently had the rights to the series.
I think the company was Kadowka or something like it.
Anyone it appears that they approached the indiviual at a con and asked about the rumors.
Though this is not to say that such talks might not be underway,as you know The
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is probably one of the hottest new animes around these days so any North American distributor would be stupid not to jump at the chance to acquire it.
